BEIJING, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese mainland held ceremonies Friday commemorating the 85th anniversary of the death of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner of the anti-feudalism revolution in China.In Beijing, a ceremony was held in Zhongshan Park, a park named after Dr. Sun.Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body, Zhou Tienong, chairman of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang (RCCK), Lou Zhihao, deputy head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and Beijing Vice-Mayoress Cheng Hong placed flower baskets at the foot of a statue of Sun Yat-sen.The ceremony was presided over by Li Wuwei, vice chairman of the Central Committee of the RCCK, and was joined by more than 200 people including representatives from the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature.Local officials and citizens in east China's Jiangsu Province marked the day at the mausoleum of Dr. Sun in Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu, honoring his spirit and achievements in the revolution and calling for national reunification.In Shanghai, books were published about Dr. Sun and his wife, Soong Ching Ling, former Chinese Honorary President, commemorating his death.A local official at the Shanghai ceremony held in the former residence of Dr. Sun, said he hoped that the books would promote patriotism among the public, especially the youth.Dr. Sun was born in 1866 and died in 1925. He is known to the Chinese as a "great revolutionary and statesman" who fought against feudalism and imperialist aggression and for the independence and freedom of the Chinese people. Memorial ceremonies are held every year on the date of his death around the nation.

"The second plane, which was delayed due to limited capacity of the Haitian airport, will arrive on Jan. 26."Since Jan. 13, the 60-member emergency rescue team sent by the Chinese government has fully engaged in disaster relief in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, he said. "The team has carried out effective search and rescue operations at the headquarters of MINUSTAH (the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti), the prime minister's palace and other places, with a number of bodies found, including those of Special Representative Hedi Annabi of MINUSTAH and other UN staff.""The medical team of the Chinese rescue team are providing medical support for several hundred local people everyday," he said. "The number of gang-related cases and those involved was relatively low in Chongqing compared with the country's figures.""We heard those cases strictly according to the criminal law ," Qian said.He said more than 200 deputies to legislatures at different levels and hundreds of journalists heard the court proceedings of those cases, particularly the case of Wen Qiang, a former judicial chief of the municipality.Chongqing started a sweeping crackdown against organized crimes in the city in June last year, in which more than 3,300 suspects were arrested.A total of 87 officials were prosecuted after the massive crackdown for being related with gangs, including 12 high-ranking officials.

SINGAPORE, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said on Tuesday that China will become even more important globally and Singapore must find opportunities to ride on China's growth.Speaking at the Business China spring reception on Tuesday night, Goh said that China has over the past year weathered the global economic downturn with exceptional resilience.Despite shrinking external demand and rising unemployment, China's timely and bold policy responses have enabled its economy to grow at a sizzling 8.7 percent last year, he said, adding that China is now reinforcing its role as the engine for growth in Asia, if not the world.Goh said that the city state recognized China's potential early, soon after China began to open up its economy in 1978.Because of the early efforts made by the Singapore government and Singaporeans, China is today the city state's third largest trading partner and top investment destination, Goh said.As for riding on China's growth, Goh said that the Singapore government will help its companies gain an even stronger foothold in China, and continue to catalyze business opportunities in China.The seven provincial-level business councils, as well as other high-level dialogues and platforms, help open opportunities for companies, reinforce the Singapore brand name and increase its mindshare in China, Goh said.
