Paul Manafort's longtime deputy Rick Gates admitted in court Tuesday to having an extramarital affair a decade ago, but denied the contention from Manafort's attorney that he stole money to pay for it.Manafort's defense lawyer Kevin Downing raised Gates affair in cross-examination, peppering Gates with questions about what he dubbed "the secret life of Rick Gates." Downing said Gates was living in London and other cities and using Manafort's money from offshore accounts to fund the affair.Gates acknowledged the affair but said the money came from bonuses.The exchange occurred after Gates testified against his former boss on Tuesday that Manafort used email to direct Gates to transfer money through offshore accounts.On Tuesday, prosecutors began to show emails between Manafort and Gates that appear to confirm Gates' story that Manafort sought to move money that his consulting company had earned from Ukraine through Cypriot accounts. 953

Police and other law enforcement are constantly trying to stay ahead of criminals, but sometimes technology can get in the way.Apple made headlines a couple years back, when the company refused to unlock a phone when asked by law enforcement.Then came Grayshift, a company that specializes in cracking iPhones.  "Apple's fighting these guys pretty hard,” says digital security expert Steve Beaty. “Has been a bit of a chess game right."Beaty is a digital security expert professor with Metropolitan State University of Denver."It appears that people aren't now able to break into the iPhone with the most recent release of version 12 of iOS," Beaty explains.While Apple isn't saying much about what they've done, law enforcement around the country will have to scramble to find new ways to get into these devices.Beaty seems to think it's related to a small change in access by adding a USB restrict mode--that disables devices after a certain amount of time if it’s plugged into your phone."They can plug into iPhones, that historically in general, have what we call brute force them," Beaty explains.Brute forcing allows Grayshift to continue putting in passcodes until they find the right one. But because these external devices deactivate after about an hour, their process is interrupted. That's the main belief in how Apple is thwarting these devices.If you're worried about security, it's simple to activate USB restrict mode on your phone. There may be some other problems though you could run into charging issue."So, for the time being, I don't see it being more than a chess game that they are going to be advances made on either side,” says Beaty. “And I don't think there's going to be a definitive, if you will, checkmate in the foreseeable future." 1776

Pharmacists will be instrumental in getting the first round of COVID-19 vaccines out, especially for the most vulnerable.Walgreens and CVS have a deal with the U.S. Department of Health to go into more than 50,000 long-term care facilities. Both companies are still recruiting pharmacists, nurses and pharmacy technicians.“I am absolutely supportive of getting a vaccine and I will be the first in line when I am eligible to get one. I believe in vaccines. I believe in the science of vaccines,” said Tasha Polster, who deals with pharmacy quality, compliance and patient safety at Walgreens.Once the vaccine is more widely available, people will be able to sign up online to get the vaccine at a pharmacy location.Walgreens plans to work with communities to set up COVID-19 vaccine sites in other locations, like they do with the flu shot.“We work with churches and local community centers in underserved populations to bring the vaccine to those patients that would you know need them,” said Polster.Speaking of the flu, the pandemic has brought some encouraging news on that front.Walgreens created special map models to show what the flu season has done so far this year compared to last year. (KGTV) — An auto theft suspect barricaded himself in an SUV at a South Bay motel, prompting a seven-hour SWAT standoff Thursday.SWAT officers surrounded the SUV in the E-Z 8 Motel on Outer Rd. at around 9 a.m. in the Palm City neighborhood, near Otay Mesa West.About 4 p.m., the suspect surrendered with his hands up.The suspect, identified as a man in his late 20s or early 30s, was the suspect of auto thefts in the South Bay and has a criminal history in the National City area, according to San Diego Police. Police had previously told 10News the man was a hit-and-run suspect.National City Police responded to the motel Thursday morning waiting for the suspect to exit, according to SDPD. The suspect and his girlfriend got into the parked SUV. When police surrounded the pair, the woman surrendered but the suspect did not. She was not arrested, police told 10News.Police initially believed the suspect was armed, they're continuing to search his motel room and vehicle for the gun. 1015
