SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego State University study abroad student and a University of San Diego graduate student have both tested positive for the coronavirus, the universities announced Friday.The SDSU student was studying abroad in Italy and recently returned home to the United States. The student is self-isolating at his home outside of San Diego County, the university said in a release.They added that the student visited two off campus offices for a brief period of time, and did not attend any classes."Due to the student's limited contact with the campus, we consider that the risk to the greater SDSU campus community is low," said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.A graduate student at the University of San Diego also tested positive for the virus, the university said Friday in a tweet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested late Wednesday night after a crash off Interstate 805 that left her car engulfed in flames.The incident occurred at around 11 p.m. in an area off southbound I-805, near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.ABC 10News learned the woman was involved in a two-vehicle wreck that then caused her Nissan 350Z to burst into flames.The driver was able to get out of the vehicle without major injuries; the driver of the other car was not injured.It took responding fire crews over 20 minutes to knock down the blaze.The Nissan’s driver was treated at the scene before she was arrested on unspecified charges. 639
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – All known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego have been put out, Navy officials announced Thursday afternoon.In a statement, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck, the commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Three, said:“After four days of firefighting, all known fires have been extinguished aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).Our fire teams are investigating every space to verify the absence of fire. Until every space is checked and there are no active fires we will not be able to commence any official investigations.We did not know the origin of the fire. We do not know the extent of the damage. It is too early to make any predictions or promises of what the future of the ship will be.We cannot make any conclusions, until the investigation is complete.What we do know is that brave Sailors from commands all across San Diego worked tirelessly alongside Federal Firefighters to get this fire extinguished and I want to thank them for their efforts. This was a Navy team effort. We had support from the air and sea. Three helicopter squadrons conducted more than 1,500 water bucket drops, fighting the fire and cooling the super structure and flight deck enabling fire crews to get onboard to fight the fire. Tugs also provided firefighting support from the waterline, cooling the ship’s hull.We had 63 personnel, 40 U.S. Navy Sailors and 23 civilians, treated for minor injuries including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. We have no personnel hospitalized.The Navy continues to work together with regulators, county and state in protecting our environment and preparing to address the community’s concerns as we move forward to the next phase.I’d like to thank our partners from state and county, the U.S. Coast Guard, and all agencies for continued support.”Ship’s shifting leads to evacuationCrews battling the fire aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were evacuated late Wednesday night after reported shifting of the warship.A Navy official told ABC 10News that fire teams fighting the blaze were told to clear the ship and pier shortly before 11 p.m. “out of an abundance of caution” after the vessel “naturally settled” due to the fire and water damage and was rocking slightly to one side.By 6 a.m. Thursday, Navy officials said fire crews returned to the ship to continue fighting the fire.Meanwhile, several groups are collecting supplies and other donations for those displaced by the ship fire and crews at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Southern California photography company promised parents beautiful photos of their children with unicorns. Instead, numerous parents told Team 10 they did not get what they paid for. Connie Guzman is one of those parents. When she saw a chance for a unicorn photo shoot for her only child Amelia, she was in.“My daughter’s fourth birthday was coming up. She’s super big into unicorns right now,” Guzman said. She said she paid a deposit through Venmo, with the total being 9 to Elle Alexandra Photography. The photo shoot took place on September 22.“My album was never posted, so then I emailed her. I waited about a week. No response,” Guzman said during Team 10’s interview on October 24th.Guzman said she did not get her photos in time for her daughter’s birthday. According to the agreement sent by Elle Alexandra Photography, pictures would be received within 21 days. The agreement Guzman showed Team 10 said: “Please allow up to 21 days for the final photos to be delivered to you. If your child has a birthday or needs a rush order for their photos, we will do our best to accommodate you. Just let us know what the special day is and we’ll work on getting them to you by that date!” “Very disappointed,” Guzman said. “That’s what we always want for our daughters—to give them those happy moments and those memories and I just really felt like she took those memories away.”Elle Alexandra Photography’s website said it is based out of Temecula. The clients said the photographer was Lesa Childress, who worked with her sister, Kayla.Another parent found herself in a similar situation as Guzman. Nish, who declined to use her last name, said she waited for her photos after her daughter’s unicorn photo shoot on July 28th. At first, the photographer said she already emailed them.“I’m like, looking through the spam… no, I don’t have anything,” Nish said. Then, she got a different story.“[She said] something went terribly wrong and we lost your baby pictures,” Nish said. She was told the photos were lost while evacuating the Holy Fire in Orange and Riverside Counties earlier this summer.“She said she was in a hurry to evacuate and then she just disconnected everything, unplugged everything,” Nish said. Nish said Elle Alexandra Photography offered a re-shoot on August 26th, but the photographer never showed up. She said she finally got a partial refund on September 8th and some photos, but not the ones she paid for. Those were the solo shots of her daughter on the unicorn.“It’s not about the 5. She said she did this just a couple hours after she booked it. “She was refusing to give me my money back,” Alimbuyao said. She said there was no mention of a non-refundable deposit.In all, Team 10 spoke to six people who had issues with Elle Alexandra Photography. One mom, in an email, said it was “one excuse after another” as to why she did not get pictures in time. A vendor and a separate photographer also said they did not get paid for helping with the photography business and that Lesa Childress owes the money.Team 10 reached Childress through Facebook Messenger. She sent several long messages explaining her side of the story. Childress said every person she worked with received their photos, “and if not, they either didn’t show up, they canceled their [appointment], or didn’t reschedule.”When asked about Connie Guzman, she first wrote: “that name doesn’t ring a bell.” She later said Guzman received her photos last month and showed screenshots to prove it. Guzman said that is not true. She found her photos were available on the website accessible to customers only after Team 10 got involved.Childress admitted she “got busy too quickly” and was “in over [her] head.” “I was not prepared to take on a hundred clients with just myself,” Childress wrote. However, she claimed she is the victim with people attacking her online when their photos were not ready on time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego veteran is suing 3M Company alleging earplugs he wore while in the military were defective. He’s the latest in a series of lawsuits that have been filed against the company by service members across the country.Kevin Alicie filed a lawsuit on Wednesday claiming he “used Defendant’s dangerously defective Dual-ended Combat Arms? earplugs during tank firing, training firing, other live fire training, vehicle maintenance, and during other training and combat exercises.” According to the lawsuit Alicie wore the earplugs while at Camp Pendleton and was first diagnosed with hearing loss in California. Alicie tells 10News during his military carrier he started having problems with his hearing. He’d hear ringing. He says he didn’t think much about it until the ringing started to become more frequent.“I mentioned it to the doctor when I was doing my final physical, and sure enough when they did that last hearing test they found that there was hearing loss,” Alicie said.The lawsuit says 3M did not inform the military or Alicie that the earplugs were defective and failed to adequately warn that the earplugs did not meet the military’s sound requirements."The biggest defect is they don't do what they are advertised to do,” said Alicie’s attorney John Gomez. “Essentially they are supposed to protect your ears and your hearing in proximity to loud sounds that can cause hearing loss or damage.”Attorney John Gomez says the earplugs were standard issue in certain branches of the military between 2003 and 2015.“Without question, I think tons of users-consumers and potential victims reside right here in San Diego County,” Gomez said.According to a July 2018 press release from the United States Department of Justice, 3M agreed to pay .1 million to resolve allegations that it supplied the United States with defective dual-ended combat arms earplugs.The release says, “the United States alleged that 3M, and its predecessor, Aearo Technologies, Inc., knew the CAEv2 was too short for proper insertion into users’ ears and that the earplugs could loosen imperceptibly and therefore did not perform well for certain individuals.
