DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - MLB Hall of Famer, Trevor Hoffman, joined joint developers, Zephyr Partners and The Robert Green Company Monday in supporting an initiative that would give San Diegans access to a bluff-top site that has been closed to the public for a century. The plan is to transform a nearly 17-acre site at 3350 Camino Del Mar into a luxury resort with public access to the beach down below."To be able to actually come here and enjoy it, have a glass of wine at one of the restaurants or walking on one of the trails, I'm really looking forward to it," said Del Mar resident of 50 years, KC Vafiadis. The two developers want to create a luxury resort called "Marisol" which would include a hotel with 65 rooms, 31 villas, dining options, gardens, cocktail lounge, spa and access to the beach down below. The plan is a smaller version of the original proposal, which was met with backlash by residents of Solana Beach and Del Mar. They worried it would obstruct ocean views and increase traffic in the area, so the developers downsized the project by 40-percent.The new plan is an alternative to a proposal that was already approved, which would create private, gated estates. The developers now hope to gather enough signatures for a citizen's initiative to put the plan on the ballot next March. They say they're taking into consideration bluff safety and stabilization and have plans for traffic relief as well. The initiative will be filed with the Del Mar Clerk Monday. 1492

Danish inventor Peter Madsen has been found guilty of the mutilation and murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall, and sentenced to life in prison. He was also found guilty of the indecent handling of a corpse and "sexual relations other than intercourse of a particularly dangerous nature," evidenced by stab wounds inside and outside Wall's genital area.Wall, a promising 30-year-old journalist, was last seen boarding Madsen's submarine in Copenhagen on August 10 last year when she had planned to interview him for an upcoming article.Instead she disappeared, her torso washed up on August 21 on an island near Copenhagen. Her head and legs were found weeks later.Madsen consistently denied charges of murder and sexual assault, claiming Wall died by accident from carbon dioxide poisoning, although he admitted to dismembering her body and tossing it into the sea in a state of panic.Asked on Monday if he wanted to make a last statement before the jury went into deliberation, he said, "If anything, I am sorry about what happened."  1048

DENVER, Colo. — Navigating the U.S. health care system can be daunting. It’s even harder for those who don’t speak English. However, some programs are trying to bridge the gap between these communities and health care providers.“A Vietnamese patient that lived near by here, she ran across the street and she got hit. On that day, she was rushed to the hospital and she was in the ICU. I was in the ICU for three night,” said Father Joesph Dang as he rehashed a tough memory. The young woman he’s talking about passed away. Her family spoke little to no English and he had to help them navigate through the health care system.“The family was in shock. The language was a language barrier,” said Dang.Dang is a community liaison with Denver Health. He works with the Fredrico F. Pena Family Health Center in the heart of the Vietnamese American community in Denver. As a community liaison, Dang focuses on outreach with his community and helping patients navigate the health system.“I speak Vietnamese. This how I come to support Denver Health by navigating, by giving our patients guidance, also tell them what kind of services that we offer here,” said Dang. That may not sound like a lot, but having a familiar face that speaks the same language as you can be a big deal to minority patients.“I think language is the first step of course. It’s hard to communicate with anyone if the messaging, the public health messaging, the hotlines, and the places that are set up don’t have the language that someone speaks,” said Kathleen Page. Page is a professor at Johns Hopkins University and helped start the Hopkins Organization for Latino Awareness which tries to improve health outcomes for the Latino community. She says the role of community liaisons is invaluable.“It’s so important to have messengers in the community. I can say to people, you know, I’m a doctor, trust me, please come to the hospital, we’ll take care of you. I think it means a lot more if someone who has been in the hospital says trust me, I went to the hospital, I got care, and now here I am,” she said. Page says it’s not surprising when certain minority groups experience bad health outcomes at higher rates.“When a group of is excluded from everything, excluded from services, excluded from health care and also in a way encouraged, or feel like they have to live in the shadows. It’s not surprising that when a public health emergency happens, they are going to be the ones that are left behind,” said Page. For Dang, his goal remains clear, to provide a bridge from his community to better health.“I want to bring first class service to our Vietnamese American community. What does that mean? Meaning speak in their own language, understand their culture, and understand the gap between western medicine and the eastern medicine," said Dang. 2828

Death row inmate, 61-year-old David Earl Miller will be executed tonight by the electric chair at 7 p.m. tonight.Miller is the second Tennessee death row inmate in just over a month to choose to die by the electric chair. His attorneys argued that the state's lethal injection method causes a prolonged and torturous death.Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam declined Miller's clemency application, in which his attorney claimed Miller had been suffering from “severe mental illness” at the time of his crime, and that his mental state places him “far outside that group of offenders who are the worst and for whom the death penalty is reserved.”Miller is also asking the U.S. Supreme Court to issue a stay of execution to address two separate legal issues. The high court declined to issue stays for either of the two other inmates executed this year. The inmate was moved to death watch Wednesday and served his requested last meal Thursday afternoon.Miller was convicted of killing 23-year-old Lee Standifer, who was mentally disabled, in Knoxville in 1981.A man Miller was living with found Standifer's body naked in the yard with her hands bound and roped wrapped around her body. She had been beaten and stabbed multiple times with a fire poker.Through the years, two trials were held and in both, Miller was convicted of first-degree murder.Lee Standifer 1408

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — Life at the Del Mar Fairgrounds could look much different in the future, finding uses for more than horse racing and the county fair.Tuesday night will be the second of three community meetings, in which the fairgrounds will ask the community for input on what the future of the venue should look like.Del Mar Deputy Mayor Terry Gaasterland said the uses can fulfill several regional desires."We also have a responsibility for working with Solana Beach and San Diego and the entire region," Gaasterland said. "How does this fairgrounds meet not just the needs, but the wishes and the wants and the dreams of the San Diego region?"And things are already changing. The Surf Side Race Place is being transformed into an entertainment venue. KAABOO left Del Mar for downtown last year. This year, will be mark the end of fairgrounds gun show. And racing has seen a decline in revenue and attendance."Can the fairgrounds be a leader in doing the racing? Well, that's going to be a real challenge for the fairgrounds," Gaasterland said.Gaasterland would like to see affordable housing and hopes a planned rail stop at the fairgrounds would eliminate the need for parking.A fairgrounds spokesperson says once all three meetings are done feedback from the community will be compiled and presented to the board for consideration. 1353
