SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees on Thursday responded to a scathing audit that alleged evidence of fraud or misappropriation of funds leading to a multi-million dollar deficit.In their response to the audit, the district’s Board of Trustees acknowledged the importance of an independent state agency’s audit and said they “intend to cooperate fully with these agencies should they require additional information.”“We acknowledge that, as required, you notified the local district attorney, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and State Controller that the FCMAT AB 139 report found there is sufficient evidence to demonstrate that fraud, misappropriation of funds, or other illegal fiscal activities may have occurred," the Board of Trustees said."We understand the importance of having these agencies review the report and intend to cooperate fully with these agencies should they require additional information," said the board.The 79-page audit, conducted by the independent state agency Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT), was made public June 22. According to the report, the district’s school board relied on inaccurate financial information when they approved salary increases for district employees, resulting in pay raises they could not afford.The audit also reportedly found the district kept borrowing from capital projects in the South Bay, such as Mello-Roos funds, to pay for operations without a method of repaying that money back into the fund.The board said that individuals and outside entities identified by FCMAT as having enough evidence to suggest they were engaged in illegal acts are "either no longer employed by the District or are removed from all involvement in the District’s current operations."RELATED: SUHSD: 90 bus drivers paid over 0K in overtime during 2017, database saysThe board also said that since the audit, they’ve taken other actions based on recommendations from the FCMAT, including:The district will be implementing the INFOR financial module in the 12 to 18 months. The new system replaces the one the FMCAT said said led to accounting errors and will interface with the County Office of Education for monitoring.The District will provide Board and leadership training to enhance awareness of fraud, including detection and prevention. Since then, the district's budget crisis spiraled into teachers and programs being cut, bus routes eliminated, and increased class sizes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There have been 137 community outbreaks reported in San Diego County since June 1, according to San Diego County health officials.Since March 25, the county has reported 164 community outbreaks that have resulted in 1,220 coronavirus cases:March: 3April: 16May: 8June: 34July: 93August: 10County officials broke those numbers down from June 1, 2020, to Aug. 4, 2020, where the majority of community outbreaks have been reported at restaurant/bar and business settings. This year marks a few important milestones for families and survivors.A settlement announced one day before the three-year anniversary, meaning 0 million will go to victims and families.Also, Nevada’s Governor Steve Sisolak added two more to the list of people who died as a result of the shooting. She lost her eye and now three years later, has had seven surgeries and now has a prosthetic eye. She said because of the chaos of physically healing the past few years, this is the first anniversary where she’s been able to grieve more.“I was going through so many surgeries and having so much at the time of the first and second that it kind of kept my mind so busy and so focused on that, and I tried so hard not to feel but this year I feel it a lot more,” said Romo.Doctors thought Romo would lose her sight and speech, but she defied those odds. There is still a long road to recovery for her, but she’s thankful for the life she’s been blessed with. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Registrar of Voters is asking those who received mail ballots to check their mail ballot packets, according to County News Center. Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said his office has received more than a dozen reports of missing mail ballots in the election packets for the June 5 Gubernatorial Primary. According to the registrar, as many as 1,500 ballots could be affected. Though that number is small compared to the total number of ballots, Vu said his office wants to make sure every voter gets the ballot they asked for.RELATED: Early voting begins in San Diego ahead of June 5 primary election  Nearly 1.1 million mail ballots were sent to county voters last week. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Though some of Balboa Park and its museums have partially reopened, the San Diego Natural History Museum will remain closed until 2021."The Nat" is keeping its doors closed for the rest of the year, despite whether public health orders allow the museum to reopen with coronavirus-related restrictions. Officials said the decision to keep the museum closed "was not an easy or obvious decision."During the five-month closure, museum staff said they will focus on exhibition space projects and programs, including:A new "California Blooming" exhibit upon reopeningConstructing an ADA-compliant ramp on the museum's east entranceDeveloping a new museum cafe and retail storeConverting a row of staff offices on the fourth floor into a gallery for future exhibitsCompleting a master plan for gardens outside the buildingThe museum is also reimagining its Canyoneers program to virtual hikes and recommendations and developing more digital options for the community, and students and teachers."The museum we closed in March will not be the same museum we reopen," said Judy Gradwohl, president and CEO of The Nat."Our future will combine the best of our work before and during the pandemic in a hybrid model that connects people with the wonder of nature on-site, online, and out in nature."In the meantime, staff say they plan to stay engaged with the community.“I look forward to seeing how our creative and energetic staff will make the most of the next five months,” said Gradwohl. “To borrow an analogy from the monarch butterflies I’ve been rearing this summer, I look at this extended closure and our eventual reopening as emerging from a chrysalis, not a hibernation.”The museum has been able to keep about 100 of its full-time and part-time staff and doesn't expect any changes to those positions.
