Are you taking proper precautions to ensure your Christmas tree doesn’t go up in smoke? On Monday, four people, including a child, were hospitalized with injuries from smoke inhalation from a fire caused by a child lighting a candle too close to a Christmas tree in San Diego. According to a report by the National Fire Protection Association released in 2017, nearly 200 structure fires a year are blamed on Christmas trees. According to the report, fires originating from Christmas trees cause six deaths per year, on average. One-in-four fires from Christmas trees start from heat source such as a candle. Although buying an artificial tree likely decreases the risk of a fire, for every three fires sparked by a real Christmas tree, one is caused by an artificial tree. The National Fire Protection Association released Christmas tree fire prevention tips:· Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.· Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk. · Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. · Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit. · Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily. · Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.· Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect. · Never use lit candles to decorate the tree. · Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. 1652

AUORA, Colo. – The coronavirus epidemic is having a major impact on small Asian-run businesses in the United States. Some places say the number of customers has dropped by half. The Pacific Ocean Market has been a staple of Asian American businesses in Aurora, Colorado, for years."There is such a variety of places to eat and different types of food and things you don't normally see in the ordinary market," said one customer of the market. Within the last month, business at the market has been somewhat of a roller coaster ride since the new coronavirus first surfaced. "With people panicking across the country, we've heard stories in New York saying there's no more rice and Atlanta there's no more rice, so people have been continuing to stock up on that," said Betty Lam, one of the two daughters of the owner of the market. The outbreak began in China and quickly spread across Asia. Since then, a growing number of coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the U.S. and customers seem to be staying away from Asian American businesses as a precaution.According to The New York Times, business at shops that sell Asian products dropped by 70 percent in the first two weeks of February. The Chinese Merchants Association in San Francisco says foot traffic in their Chinatown district dropped by 50 percent."It's a little off and on right now,” said Lam. “We're not too sure how it's going to go." Lam says she’s already heard of businesses being affected."From the restaurants we work with, we have seen and heard that they're not doing very good and there have been a lot of customers and loyal customers who haven't been going to their restaurants due to the coronavirus." Lam hopes that the public continues to be educated and aware. That way, Asian businesses can still thrive during these times. 1819

Black Friday is more than two months away. But in a tight labor market, America's retailers and delivery giants are starting to look for seasonal help to handle the holiday shopping rush.Target said Tuesday that it would hire more than 130,000 temporary workers for its stores and distribution centers. Last year, Target hired about 120,000 workers for the holidays. More than 40% of those employees stayed on with Target past the holiday season, according to the company.UPS also announced plans Monday to hire around 100,000 holiday workers, roughly the same number as last year. And Amazon said it would announce its holiday hiring plans in the coming weeks. Amazon hired around 100,000 seasonal workers a year ago.As companies have done in past years, they are relying on higher hourly wages and perks to attract workers. Target will pay an hour to seasonal workers for the first time and offer them discounts at stores. UPS will offer students the opportunity to earn ,300 for college expenses.Finding workers to staff stores and delivery hubs could be difficult. America's unemployment rate remains below 4%.Stores are having trouble filling job vacancies, despite a series of mass closures that have resulted in employment in retail 1258
