SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police sought the public's help Tuesday to find a Navy SEAL veteran last seen more than two weeks ago at his residence in the Chollas Lake Park area.Johnathan Steven Surmont, 45, was last seen Aug. 27 and was last heard from when he contacted his ex-wife Aug. 31 to tell her he was in a "rough place" in Los Angeles, according to a missing person bulletin from the San Diego Police Department. His vehicle was found four days later, on Sept. 3, in La Jolla.In a video posted to Vimeo dated three years ago, Surmont described himself as a disabled veteran who spent 15 years as a Navy SEAL."I was a SEAL sniper, communicator and unmanned systems expert," he said in a testimonial for the Red Circle Foundation, an organization that describes itself as supporting the families of fallen and wounded U.S. Special Operations forces."I'm a single father and a small business owner," Surmont said before describing a long list of injuries, which he said included "a traumatic brain injury" and "about 17 different areas that I'm experiencing chronic pain on a daily basis." Some of the injuries were apparently sustained during his time as a SEAL, while others occurred in a car crash."One of the things I struggle with is, I look fine," Surmont said with a laugh in a lighter moment of the mostly solemn testimonial. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County arson investigators were called to the scene of a commercial structure fire today in Spring Valley, authorities said.The fire began at 8:02 a.m. at a structure in the 300 block of Elkelton Place, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department reported.The fire was put out by San Miguel Fire District firefighters shortly afterward. The fire was isolated to the commercial structure, sheriff's officials said.No injuries were reported. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties like condominiums and townhomes both fell by roughly 25 percent in September compared to August, according to data released Tuesday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Single-family home sales decreased from 2,039 in August to 1,536 in September, a 24.7 percent decline. Condo and townhome sales fell from 1,056 to 792, a 25 percent decrease.Year-over-year sales figures were also down, with single-family home sales falling 21.6 percent from 1,958 in September 2017 to 1,536 last month, and attached property sales down 22.7 percent from 1,024 to 792 listings sold.In total, previously-owned home sales in 2018 are down 9 percent compared to the first nine months of 2017."I'm hopeful that residential sales will continue along a mostly positive line for the rest of the year," said GSDAR President Steve Fraioli. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Planning Commission Thursday recommended approval of Riverwalk San Diego project, a proposed transit-oriented neighborhood development along the San Diego River in Mission Valley.International real estate firm Hines has proposed the 200-acre project, which is intended to transform the existing Riverwalk golf course into a neighborhood as well as restore the stretch of the San Diego River that runs through it.The proposal will head to the San Diego City Council on Nov. 17. According to Hines, if it is approved, the company plans to break ground during the second half of 2021.The Hines plan includes 4,300 homes -- 10% of which are planned to be affordable housing -- a Metropolitan Transit System Green Line trolley stop, 152,000-square-feet of retail space, 1 million square feet of office space, 100 acres of parks and new bike and pedestrian paths, including an extension of the San Diego River Trail."I think it could be something to set the standard for what transit- oriented development can look like," said San Diego Planning Commissioner Vicki Granowitz.The Riverwalk plan, established through a partnership between Hines and the Levi-Cushman family landowners, incorporates community input gathered over several years by the Hines team in nearly 100 stakeholder and community planning group meetings."We appreciate that the planning commissioners recognized the extensive community outreach and collaboration that helped form our plan and the care we're taking to create an environmentally responsible, transit- oriented legacy project for San Diego," said Eric Hepfer, managing director at Hines.The planning commission recommended approval by a vote of five in favor, with one abstention and one commissioner absent. 1774
