KHARTOUM, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Special Envoy to Darfur, Liu Guijin, on Wednesday reiterated his country's support to the ongoing efforts to find a peaceful settlement to the Darfur crisis. SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- South Korea plans to launch a joint research with China and Japan on the feasibility of a free trade agreement (FTA) among the three Northeast Asian countries, South Korea's foreign ministry said Wednesday.According to a report by the ministry, the country, which has been seeking an economic integration of the Northeast Asian region by creating favorable conditions for FTAs, will kick off a joint study with the countries, in which government officials, scholars and business representatives will participate.Along with the trilateral FTA, the country will also continue to push for settling separate bilateral trade agreements with China and Japan, the ministry said in the report.Currently, South Korea has free trade agreements with Chile, Singapore and the European Free Trade Association, as well as a similar pact with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.Recently reaching a free trade deal with the European Union, the country also wrapped up its free trade talks with India, settling the so-called comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) in August.With respect to the free trade deal with the United States, signed in June 2007, both countries are waiting for legislative approval.South Korea is also seeking similar trade deals with Australia, Canada, and Mexico.

BEIJING, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao held a telephone conversation with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on bilateral ties Thursday, with both sides expressing willingness to promote cooperation.The Chinese president said China-Brazil relations have been deepening in a comprehensive way, marked by frequent exchange of visits between their leaders and political mutual trust.The Brazilian president's state visit to China last year brought the two countries' strategic partnership to a new level as the two sides reached consensus over a broad range of major issues, Hu said.The two countries have agreed to map out a joint action plan, he said, adding that exchanges and cooperation in various fields have seen new momentum and the two sides have maintained close coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs.China-Brazil cooperation enjoys solid political foundation and broad prospect for development, Hu said.He said further development of their strategic partnership is in the fundamental interests of both countries and is their common aspiration. BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The State Council of China Friday issued an urgent notice urging relevant departments and local authorities to settle pay disputes involving migrant workers as millions of them are heading home for lunar new year reunion.The notice asked local governments and relevant departments to prioritize in their work the settlement of migrant workers' back pay dispute with their employers.It underlined the construction industry where back pay disputes often happen.It also ordered local governments to improve the emergency management system to respond to possible mass incidents caused by pay disputes.Two migrant workers were stabbed to death by their employer over a pay dispute Wednesday in central China's Henan Province.The two men asked for wages on behalf of 17 fellow workers and got into a fight with their labor contractor after being told that their monthly payment had been docked by over 100 yuan (about 14.6 U.S. dollars), and then were stabbed in the neck with a fruit knife by the contractor.In China, millions of migrant workers from the countryside make their living in booming cities. Back pay to migrant workers has affected the income of the rural population for a long time and is considered a "chronic illness" undermining social stability.

NAIROBI, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Somali pirates have released a fishing boat from Taiwan, China, and all of its crew held since April, a regional maritime official said Thursday."The Taiwanese ship was released this morning. The fishing vessel which has a crew of 30 from various Asian nationalities was seized in April last year," Andrew Mwangura, East Africa's coordinator of the Africa Seafarers Assistance Program, told Xinhua.The Win Far 161 was seized last April 4 near an island in the Seychelles, more than 1,100 kilometers off the coast of Somalia.The ship carried a crew of 30 -- 17 Filipinos, six Indonesians, five from the Chinese Mainland and two from Taiwan, China.Mwangura said 27 crew members were said to be safe, though a Chinese sailor and two from Indonesia died in captivity.The coordinator could not confirm whether a ransom was paid to secure the release of the 700-ton ship and crew.Piracy has been rampant off Somalia since the country slid into chaos after warlords toppled military dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.Somali pirates now hold at least seven ships and more than 160 crew members.The hijackings have prompted the international community to deploy security forces in the area to deter the pirates.
