SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fans and players on Petco Park's field fled as hundreds of bees swarmed near the Padres' dugout Sunday afternoon.At about 4:06 p.m., in the bottom of the 3rd inning, Fox Sports reported a queen bee landed on their microphone and hundreds of bees followed suit."It made my skin crawl," Padres Fan Kel Loftis said."Out of the blue all of the sudden you saw everybody running off the field," Padres Fan Bob Pollack said.As fans saw the area clear out, some were concerned for their family's safety, "it was kinda crazy like what's going on?" Loftis said. As a military man, he was concerned something more serious was happening.Then everyone in the stadium saw the television screens with a close up on the swarm. "Between [Austin] Hedges, [Josh] Naylor and [Glenn] Hoffman, you know the third base coach, I was wondering who was more panicked," Loftis said chuckling.Padres Catcher Austin Hedges was seen wearing a Deadpool mask, sweatshirt and holding two bats, seemingly ready to battle the bees. A man from Cartwright Pest Control came out to save the day. Fans dubbed him "Bee Man." The delay in total was less than 30 minutes.The Padres confirmed the company is out at the park for every game in case of an event like this.A group of Girl Scouts in the crowd were concerned about the safety of the bees. This isn't the first time Petco's had bees, a swarm showed up in July of 2009 and delayed the game by almost an hour.While fans thought the bee delay Sunday was strange, they took it in stride.Some parents used it as a teachable moment. "Well she had a lot of questions so the first thing she said was why are the bees out there?" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Five more people have died from influenza in San Diego and weekly cases hit a season high this past week.County health officials said one of the flu deaths included a 40-year-old man from North County who had underlying medical conditions with no known flu vaccination record. The other deaths ranged from 47 to 90 years of age and all also had underlying medical conditions.This season, there have been a total of 54 influenza-related deaths in the county. People should continue getting vaccinated and taking other preventative measures, especially those at higher risk of developing complications," said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer, said. The number is up 21 percent of the week before, when 536 cases were recorded.Due to the increased flu activity, an order for unvaccinated medical personnel to to wear masks while in patient care areas has been extended until April 30.Flu shots are available at doctors' offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health centers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Homeless encampments have moved into the site of previous fires in University heights, sparking more fire concerns.March 2018. Amid a firefight along Highway 163, bystanders on the Vermont Street Bridge looking on soon after the flames spark. Fire crews would put out that fire without any major damage. Months later, a smaller fire erupted in the same area, near another encampment. Marybeth Chruden and the University Heights Community Association organized a petition drive, leading the San Diego City Council to approve more than a million dollars for canyon abatements across the city, including one at the University Heights site in July.In the past few weeks, that site looked a lot different."Shocked, but in a way, not surprised," said Chruden.Chruden's group posted photos on their Facebook page of homeless encampments and the surrounding mess."It shows they are very comfortable, out in the open ... We see people smoking and little campfires down there. The fire danger still high with dry materials in that canyon," said Chruden.Chruden says after several requests on the city's 'Get It Done' app, crews cleared out the area Wednesday morning, except for one mattress. The problem? She expects the homeless to move back in soon."Maybe tonight, in three days or four days.
