A 16-year-old white high school student is in custody after her plan to attack an historically black church in Gainesville, Georgia, with knives was foiled, police said Tuesday.The Gainesville High School student had been planning the attack at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church for several weeks, police said.She took significant steps, including researching black churches online and visiting Bethel AME once this month, police Chief Jay Parrish said. No one was at the church at the time, he said.A student overheard the teenager talking about the alleged threat on Friday and alerted a school administrator, who in turn notified a school resource officer, Parrish said.The teenager was taken into custody. She faces a charge of criminal attempt to commit murder, police said. "I have no doubt that we thwarted an attack that would've been ugly," Parrish said.Sgt. Kevin Holbrook with Gainesville police said he is not aware of the teen having an attorney.The teenager targeted Bethel AME because of its African American congregants and small congregation, the police chief said."I do know that she did a lot of internet research on what she wanted to do," Parrish said. "I think she wanted notoriety and in that she looked up African American churches."He said that even though there are several black churches in Gainesville, "somehow it landed her on this one and that became the target."Parrish said the teenager had written down how she planned to carry out the alleged plot and collected knives."She is a racist," the chief said, adding he wouldn't make the statement without "substantial evidence."He said the details he read about the alleged plot were "very sickening."The chief said it was "divine intervention" that no one was at the church when the teenager visited. He believes she had the knives with her.Police believe the girl acted alone. A Florida woman is facing attempted murder charges after police say she told her four children to unbuckle their seat belts and then purposefully drove a minivan into a tree yesterday.Calicia Williams and the children, who are between 7 and 13 years old, were all injured in the crash, Ocala police said in a release.Williams was speeding and told the children to take off their seat belts and stretch out their hands before the crash, according to the release."The devil can't hurt you, he only hurts bad people," Williams said just before the crash, according to the police report, which cited a witness whose name was redacted. "You have the light of Jesus in you and only Jesus can cure us," according to the police report.Williams was standing outside of the van when police arrived. A proposed three-digit number – 9-8-8 – is on the verge of becoming the new nationwide hotline for suicide prevention. “I think that shortening the number to three digits really has the opportunity to save so many lives,” said Alison Malmon, founder of Active Minds, a national non-profit focusing on mental health. “The prominence that this three-digit number will bring to suicide prevention is extraordinary.” For Malmon, a new suicide prevention hotline is personal. “As the survivor of my brother's suicide, it really means so much to me to know that lives will be saved through culture change and through bringing more prominence to the issues around suicide prevention that this three-digit number will bring,” she said. For years, the suicide prevention hotline has been a 10-digit 800-number: 1- 800 – 273 – TALK. Mental health experts say shortening it makes it easier to remember and could save lives in the process. “If we were in an emergency situation, we're stressed and it's hard for us to remember a lot of things,” said Charles Ingoglia, president of the National Council for Behavioral Health. “And so, I think the idea behind moving to a three-digit number related to suicide is to facilitate people being able to contact help easily and quickly.” Each year, more than 47,000 people in the U.S. die by suicide: that’s one person, nearly every 12 minutes. “If you look at where we are now the highest numbers of suicide we've seen since World War II,” said Colleen Creighton of the American Association of Suicidology. “So, clearly we need to change something we need to get something done and having a really easily accessible three-digit code is the way to go.” It’s a move welcomed by those forced to face a loved ones’ loss to suicide. “There's so much change on the horizon,” Malmon said. A 4-year-old girl and four family members are recovering after a bobcat attack on Mt. Graham. Two campgrounds are closed with Arizona Game and Fish trying to catch and kill the cat they suspect has rabies. Has more on what officials are calling an extreme and bizarre animal attack. Game and Fish says they won't know for sure until they catch and test the animal, but this is simply not the behavior of a healthy bobcat. They say it needs to be destroyed. “The behavior is extreme by any reasonable standard. This is not someone coming across a bobcat and quickly being bit and the bobcat running off, this is sustained attacks on human beings,” said Arizona Game and Fish Spokesperson Mark Hart. The Family camping on Mt. Graham survived a traumatic experience Sunday. “A year-old girl ran behind the tent, her mother heard screaming, and they came around the tent to see she was being attacked by a bobcat, on the ground bitten at least once in the head.”The girl's father, two uncles, and a teenage girl came to her aid and the bobcat attacked them too. Hart says mountain lions can target children, but a healthy bobcat never would. “A bobcat is going to be more interested in an antelope squirrel or a rodent, not a human being it’s too big, the child was bigger than the bobcat.”The girl was treated for rabies exposure at a nearby hospital. Her family needed to go to two other hospitals to get the vaccine. All have been released. “Once symptoms onset rabies is almost always fatal. If you are exhibiting symptoms the vaccine won't work but if you get it before symptoms onset your life will be saved.”Shannon and Snow Flat campgrounds have been closed to the public. “We are on scene today setting traps and using predator calls in an attempt to lure the bobcat in, it has to be destroyed.”Hart says rabies are more common in foxes, bats, and skunks but the disease can be spread to other animals.
