A cadre of former FDA commissioners under Republican and Democratic presidents say that President Donald Trump has undermined the credibility of the FDA.Robert Califf, Scott Gottlieb, Margaret Hamburg, Jane Henney, David Kessler, Mark McClellan and Andy von Eschenbach pinned a joint op-ed in the Washington Post on Tuesday.Among the group who signed the letter, Gottlieb was Trump’s longest service FDA commissioner, heading the agency for nearly two years until April 5, 2019.The former commissioners said Trump has inserted himself into the vaccine approval process.“But a safe and effective vaccine will not be enough; people will also have to choose to take it,” the former commissioners wrote. “This depends on widespread confidence that the vaccine approval was based on sound science and not politics. If the White House takes the unprecedented step of trying to tip the scales on how safety and benefits will be judged, the impact on public trust will render an effective vaccine much less so.”Last week, Trump said it’s possible he would overrule the FDA if the agency uses stricter guidelines to give an emergency use authorization for a coronavirus vaccine candidate.The group of former commissioners blasted Trump for his comments.“The implications of the recent shift are potentially dire,” they wrote. “When the FDA warns about a risk from contaminated food, will people heed it? A man convicted of sexually assaulting a sleeping woman on an overnight flight from Las Vegas to Detroit was sentenced on Thursday to nine years in prison, according to federal prosecutors.Prabhu Ramamoorthy, 35, was convicted in August of sexual abuse onboard an aircraft. Jurors deliberated for less than four hours before returning the guilty verdict.Authorities say that during an Spirit Airlines flight in January, Ramamoorthy put his hand down the pants of the woman sitting next to him and molested her while she slept."The sexual assault woke her up, she found her pants unbuttoned and unzipped, and she sought help from the flight attendants," according to a statement from the US Attorney's Office.Ramamoorthy was taken into custody when the flight landed.His attorneys did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment on the sentencing."The sentence announced today is proof that the safety and security of all aircraft passengers is a priority for the FBI, our local and federal law enforcement partners, and airline personnel," Timothy R. Slater, the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Detroit Division said in a statement. "If you, or someone you know, is the victim of a crime during air travel, immediately notify a flight crew member, airport security police, and the FBI."The government said Ramamoorthy is in the United States on a work visa and that he will be deported after he serves his sentence. A child in Galion, Ohio tested positive for meth on Sunday, just hours after trick or treating in the small town located between Columbus and Cleveland, WBNS-TV reported. According to the Galion Police, the boy is expected to make a full recovery after suffering a seizure. The boy reportedly was sickened after playing with fake teeth that were given to him while trick or treating. The boy's father reportedly said that the boy only had a few pieces of candy before getting sick. The Galion Police has not confirmed how the boy became sick from meth, and an investigation is underway. In the meantime, the police department has issued a warning to its residents. "We encourage parents to thoroughly check any candy your children may have received before they eat it," the Galion Police Department said. An expert on Halloween sadism, Joel Best, has previously said that intentional tainting of trick or treat candy is generally rare.“There is this fear out there, and it is terribly overblown,” Best said. “They are worried that some maniac will hand them a contaminated treat, and I can’t find any evidence that has ever resulted to a death or serious injury.” 1201
