America's middle class families aren't the only ones having a tough time these days.Middle-income households are disappearing in developed countries around the world, according to a new report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.The study, titled "Under Pressure: The Squeezed Middle Class," laid out a litany of problems affecting middle-income households. But while many presidential candidates point to Europe as a model, the OECD report shows that problems exist there too.The share of people in middle-income households in developed countries fell from 64% in the mid-1980s to only 61% by the mid-2010s. However the declines were larger in several countries, including the United States, Israel, Germany, Canada, Finland and Sweden.In the United States, just over 50% of the population is middle class, much smaller than most other developed countries.The report considers households earning between 75% and 200% of the median national income as middle class.Higher costs, less incomeRising income inequality is part of the reason for the trend. Over the past 30 years, median incomes in OECD countries increased a third less than the average income of the richest 10%, the report found.At the same time, costs are going up faster than inflation in the world's richest economies — making it harder for the middle class to keep up. Home prices, in particular, have been growing more than a third faster than median household income in recent decades. The middle class spent 32% of their budgets on housing in 2015, compared to 25% in 1985.More than one in five middle-income households spend more than they earn.The middle class has also been losing economic clout in OECD countries, which could ripple through societies. The total income of this group was about four times that of upper-income households in 1985. Thirty years later, the ratio fell to less than three."The investment of the middle class in education, health, and housing, their support for good quality public services, their intolerance of corruption, and their trust in others and in democratic institutions, are the very foundations of inclusive growth," the report said.Millennials struggle to make itYounger people are having a harder time achieving middle class status than those in previous generations. Being middle class once meant living in a comfortable house and affording a rewarding lifestyle, thanks to a stable job with career opportunities, the report said. It was also a basis from which families aspired to an even better future for their children.Close to 70% of the baby boomers were part of the middle class when they were in their 20s, compared to nearly 64% of Gen X but only 60% of millennials. Baby boomers also enjoyed more stable jobs during their working life than younger generations.Job insecurity is on the rise as labor markets transform amid increasing globalization and technological use. One in six current middle-income jobs face high risk of automation."These trends paint an uncertain picture for workers with middle incomes, in particular, those with low-medium skills in routine jobs," the report said.The OECD offers some suggestions for addressing the middle class squeeze, many of which match the talking points of progressive US candidates. Actor Kevin Spacey appeared at a Nantucket courthouse and a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf, in connection with accusations that he allegedly groped an 18-year-old busboy at a bar on the island.Spacey, the 59-year-old Hollywood actor, was arraigned on a charge of indecent assault and battery, a felony charge that comes with up to five years in prison.Prosecutors asked that he stay away from the alleged victim and his family, and the court agreed. Defense attorneys asked the court to preserve cell phone data and other text messages from the victim from the date of the incident until six months afterward, which defense attorneys said would be "likely exculpatory" for Spacey.The next court appearance is scheduled for March 4. A mother has been arrested and charged after workers at a day care center in Sandusky, Ohio, found bruises on her 4-year-old child. Loryn Smith, 21, was arrested after daycare workers at Kiddie Korral noticed her 4-year-old son had visible injuries on his body, according Sandusky police. On Wednesday, after the boy arrived at the daycare center, staff members noticed he had two visible bruises on his left arm. When asked where the bruises came from, the boy told staff they came from his mother, police said. The boy told daycare staff that Smith had struck him multiple times with a belt and a shoe and asked for an ice pack for his injuries. The workers then took the boy into a private room and asked him where he was in pain. He showed them bruises, scratches, swelling and several superficial lacerations on his legs and arms, according to police. Staff at Kiddie Korral then contacted Erie County Children's Services.After further investigation into the boy’s injuries, bruises, welts and superficial lacerations were found on his legs, buttocks and lower back. Purple and red bruises were found on the boy's thigh, hip and inner groin. The boy told Children's Services that he had been hit “a lot” by Smith and that she has told him to “stop being bad,” according to police. Children's Services staff told daycare workers the boy would not be released to Smith and he was transported to a nearby hospital due to the pain he was in. After locating Smith, she told police that she did hit her son but that it was disciplinary. Smith was arrested and charged with endangering children, felonious assault and domestic violence. Police transported Smith to the Erie County Jail where she is currently being held. 1731

A second federal judge has issued an order permanently blocking the Trump administration from adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census in any form, despite the Trump administration's insistence it has abandoned plans to add the question on the census.The latest order is from Judge George Hazel who is overseeing a case in federal court in Maryland. New York federal judge Jesse Furman issued a nearly identical order Tuesday.Both judges will also continue to monitor the controversial issue, saying they will both retain jurisdiction in the case until the 2020 census results are processed.Plaintiffs in the New York case have asked the judge for additional discovery and to consider sanctions against administration officials if the judge ultimately determines they were untruthful in recounting the motivation behind adding a citizenship question.President Donald Trump announced last week that he will seek citizenship information from agencies that already collect the data, and will not pursue placing a citizenship question on the 2020 census. The Supreme Court in June blocked the question from being added.Changes to the census could impact the balance of power in states and the House of Representatives, which are based on total population. Census data is used for the allocation of congressional seats and the distribution of billions of federal dollars to states and localities over the next decade.The Trump administration has claimed the citizenship question on the census questionnaire was necessary to better comply with federal voting rights law.
