Logging onto social media platforms can provide joy for many people. Grandparents can see pictures of their grandkids. People can connect with peers or catch up on topics they follow. But in the same social media feeds are posts that seem normal but pose a danger that isn’t always obvious.Misinformation isn’t always a clearly false statement of fact. It can be one subtle change that twists the truth. Experts say misinformation is spreading faster and easier than ever before. They’re hoping to address the issue by asking why people believe and share false information.Researchers say the process people use to process and share information, particularly on social media, can help provide some answers. Studies show people tend to use cognitive shortcuts when they decide what to share online. For a person sharing a particular article or picture, those shortcuts involve asking themselves:Is the content consistent with what they have shared before? Is the content consistent with what most others share?Does the content come from a credible source?Researchers think manipulating those factors could be key in getting people to share posts with misinformation and increase its organic reach.Experts think age is another factor in how misinformation spreads online. One study found people 65 and older shared seven times more misinformation on social media during the 2016 election cycle than the youngest age group studied. Researchers say a lack of digital media literacy in seniors could help explain the gap. They’re now pushing initiatives to increase literacy rates. There’s one way researchers found to help stop people from sharing misinformation and that’s a simple reminder to consider the source and accuracy of information before sharing. 1758

Look up at the sky this week. We will get a treat as Jupiter and Saturn will be the closest they have been in the sky in four centuries. Appearing as a “Christmas star,” the "great conjunction" happens next Monday, December 21, which also happens to be the Winter Solstice, marking the start of the winter season. A conjunction happens when planets appear close in the night sky and line up with Earth’s orbits. The last time Jupiter and Saturn were this close was 1623, about 14 years after Galileo was using rudimentary telescopes to study outer space. However, that year, the conjunction was too close to the sun to view it. The last time Jupiter and Saturn were this close and visible to the Earth was during the Middle Ages in 1226. 746

LONDON (AP) — Authorities say a Florida teen hacked the Twitter accounts of prominent politicians, celebrities and technology moguls to scam people around the globe out of more than 0,000 in Bitcoin. The 17-year-old boy was arrested Friday in Tampa. He faces 30 felony charges.“These crimes were perpetrated using the names of famous people and celebrities, but they’re not the primary victims here. This ‘Bit-Con’ was designed to steal money from regular Americans from all over the country, including here in Florida. This massive fraud was orchestrated right here in our backyard, and we will not stand for that,” Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren said. The hacks led to bogus tweets being sent out July 15 from the accounts of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Mike Bloomberg, and a number of tech billionaires including Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The tweets offered to send ,000 for every ,000 sent to an anonymous Bitcoin address.“I want to congratulate our federal law enforcement partners—the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California, the FBI, the IRS, and the Secret Service—as well as the Florida Department of Law enforcement. They worked quickly to investigate and identify the perpetrator of a sophisticated and extensive fraud,” State Attorney Warren said.“This defendant lives here in Tampa, he committed the crime here, and he’ll be prosecuted here,” Warren added. The FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice conducted a complex nationwide investigation and located the teen in Hillsborough County. The teen is facing the following charges:Organized fraud of over ,00017 counts of communications fraud of over 0Fraudulent use of personal information of over 0,000 or 30 or more victims10 counts of fraudulent use of personal informationAccess to computer or electronic device without authority, scheme to defraud“Working together, we will hold this defendant accountable,” Warren said. “Scamming people out of their hard-earned money is always wrong. Whether you’re taking advantage of someone in person or on the internet, trying to steal their cash or their cryptocurrency—it’s fraud, it’s illegal, and you won’t get away with it.” 2241

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Several Republican candidates gained ground in updated vote counts in closely fought House districts in Southern California. In the 50th District anchored in San Diego County, Republican former Rep. Darrell Issa padded his lead to more than 16,000 votes. The district was previously held by Republican Duncan Hunter, who resigned after pleading guilty to conspiracy to misuse campaign funds for personal use.As of Friday afternoon, Issa led Democratic challenger Ammar Campa-Najjar 146,398 to 130,226 votes, with 66% of precincts reporting.Republicans are trying to recapture some of the seven districts the party lost to Democrats in 2018.Republican Rep. Mike Garcia in the 25th District north of Los Angeles was trailing Democrat Christy Smith but Thursday's vote count update gave him a slight edge. In the 48th District in Orange County, Republican Michelle Steel added about 2,000 votes to her lead over Democratic Rep. Harley Rouda. 966
