TUCSON, Ariz. — A nationwide scam claims you'll be arrested because you missed jury duty and you'll have to pay right away to escape it. You might think you can spot a gimmick a mile away, but a Tucson businesswoman fell for it last week.At the start of Denise Hausler's busy workday as a licensed professional counselor, she received a call that went to voicemail. The man identified her by name."Hello, Ms. Hausler, this is Sgt. Adam with the Pima County Sheriff's Department warrant and citation division," the caller said. "Ma'am I'm calling in regards of an ongoing civil matter, ma'am."Hausler called him back right away. The imposter told her there were two federal warrants out for her arrest. Hausler panicked, fearing she would be arrested at her office in front of her clients."And he said, 'We're going to send someone to arrest you unless you volunteer to come down to the sheriff's office off of Benson Highway,' which made sense because the sheriff's office is off of Benson Highway," she said.The caller told her if she drove down to the sheriff's department right away, she can post bond then appear before a judge who will probably give her the money back."I'm panicked, I'm crying, I'm literally thanking this man for helping me not be arrested and being able to go home and not be detained and apologizing," she said.And he told her she can't get off the phone with him or talk to anyone."'We're going to track you by phone until you get to this location because we don't want you to flee,' and I'm believing this," she said.Minutes later, the caller instructed her to first buy My Vanilla cards from Walmart — five of them — totaling ,500 because the payment system was down at the sheriff's department and those specific cards are used for these types of cases.And she believed him. "I know, I know," she said. "In retrospect, I think, who am I? It doesn't even sound real. But when you're in it, he was so intimidating and so direct and telling me, 'We're going to come and detain you.' " She bought the cards. The scammer then told her to read all the card numbers to him to verify they're valid.She did, but at that point she became suspicious and asked a stranger to call the sheriff's department."And the man said, 'You're getting scammed. You need to get in there an undo your cards,' " she said.But it was too late. She could only recover less than a ,000. Hausler wanted to share her story because the scam can be very believable."I just don't want other people to fall for it. If you hear 'My Vanilla,' now I know the sheriff's department does not come to get you if you did miss jury duty. I didn't know that," said Hausler.KGUN called that same phone number left on Hausler's voicemail and it's the same voice saying it's the Pima County Sheriff's Department. These con artists used a spoofed phone number.The Arizona Attorney General says legitimate government offices will not threaten you with imprisonment or demand that you pay a debt immediately.    Law enforcement and courts in southern Arizona have also been warning people not to fall for it.The Arizona Superior Court in Pima County has received several recent reports of jury service scams in Pima County. Officials say callers have also instructed people to go to the courthouse after purchasing  Green Dot card(s).If a person does fail to appear for jury service, they may be mailed a notice card which would read:  3504

Twenty-three and a college graduate, Angela Pennella's life was just beginning. But a split-second moment marked the beginning of a life forever changed."It was a day I didn't see coming," said Pennella. "There was a lot of emotion. I was angry, really sad. I lost most of my 20s from that day that was almost fatal."She was five minutes away from home when a reckless driver crossed the double yellow lines going 55 MPH in a 35-MPH zone, hitting her head-on."I don't remember much of that day at all, but that's the day that really changed my life," said Pennella.She was cut out of the vehicle and flown to the hospital with a lacerated liver, punctured lung, and four broken ribs, ultimately receiving over 1,000 stitches to her face and body. But it's the injury you can't see that lives with her 18 years later."The brain is this powerful tool, so beautiful. But it can also really get you down and bring you to a place that isn't who you are," said Pennella,She suffered a severe brain injury and had to re-learn how to talk again. Today, she still struggles with memory problems and mental exhaustion after everyday tasks."Once the brain is injured, it is hard to reverse that injury," said Ian Grover, medical director for the Hyperbaric and Wound Care Center at UC San Diego Medical Center.Researchers at UC San Diego Health have joined a national research study called Hyperbaric Oxygen Brain Injury Treatment (HOBIT) to assess whether the approach might also benefit patients with severe brain injuries."Because there's such time urgency, we need to get patients identified, stabilized, and get them into that hyperbaric chamber within eight hours," said Todd Costantini, the trauma medical director at UC San Diego Health. Traditionally used to treat wounds and decompression sickness in divers, patients in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber receive 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized room."The theory is that the hyperbaric oxygen will one, decrease swelling of the brain after it's been injured. And number two, it will deliver oxygen to the injured tissue," Costantini said.It's the first time this therapy is being used to treat patients in the hours after injury. Because they may still be unconscious, the study required special permission from the FDA. Participating hospitals are doing outreach to inform and educate their communities on the research."In medicine, we’ve made a lot of progress treating cancer, sepsis, those kinds of things. But in the last 20-30 years, we haven’t made significant improvement in the treatment of traumatic brain injuries,” said Grover.Because of cost and the staff required to operate this equipment; chambers are disappearing from centers nationwide. But with a brain injury occurring every 15 seconds in the United States, doctors at the participating hospitals hope the study’s results will be enough to bring the chambers back."Just to see how it would've reduced the inflammation, maybe I wouldn't have been in the ICU as long, or gained consciousness back faster," said Pennella, after learning about the research.Pennella is now an advocate, helping other brain injury survivors cope through the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation, where she is also on the board of directors. "After I went through my injury and recovery, I knew I wanted to do inspirational speaking and writing anyway that I could to just share my story to bring hope," said Pennella.Meditation, prayer, exercise, and gratitude journaling have been instrumental in her recovery. U.S. officials say the nation’s first COVID-19 vaccine will begin arriving in states Monday morning. Army Gen. Gustave Perna said Saturday that trucks will roll out Sunday morning as shipping companies UPS and FedEx begin delivering Pfizer’s vaccine to nearly 150 distribution centers across the states. An additional 425 sites will get shipments Tuesday, and the remaining 66 on Wednesday. Perna is with Operation Warp Speed, the Trump administration’s vaccine development program. TUCSON, Ariz. — Police in Marana, Arizona are investigating after a man was reportedly holding a gun in his lap at a Starbucks near Cortaro and I-10 Saturday morning.Marana Police say around 8:45 a.m. there was a report of the man having his finger on the trigger of an un-holstered gun. The man was detained without incident when officers arrived. No one was hurt.Authorities say the man, 51-year-old James Vincent Delaney, was arrested and booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Facility on felony Disorderly Conduct and Weapons Misconduct related charges.  592
