ESCONDIDO — When Greg Spence talks board games, he isn't referring to your Yahtzee's or Scrabbles. The board games he's passionate about can take hours to play - think Settlers of Catan, Spirit Island, or Sagrada.“There are so many games out there that get deep into different genres and strategies and tactics that are so much fun,” he said. “You can get lost in the variety of board games.”The problem Spence discovered with in-depth games, however, is they have dozens of pieces and can even take half-an-hour to set up.That's why in 2013, he launched the company called The Broken Token - which helps gamers organize pieces. Their products include levels of wooden trays, often marked for different kinds of game pieces. The Broken Token did so well that Spence quit his day job and opened a manufacturing space in Escondido. He's now selling internationally. But last year, he almost left California for Missouri or Indiana, states that would offer more distribution flexibility and are closer to conventions. The states are also lower cost than California, which has some of the highest taxes in the nation.“We didn't want to leave, but we were trying to make the best decision for the company,” Spence said. But instead, he got in touch with the group Innovate 78, a collection of city economic officials that pointed him in the direction of a California Competes tax credit. The 0,000 credit will allow The Broken Token to move into a new facility in Vista. In exchange, the company will invest 0,000 locally and hire 14 additional people through 2023.“There are places out there like us that need good staff and good talent,” Spence said,He added the pandemic hit them in terms of manufacturing and supply. But, they're catching up - with social distancing in place. 1785

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - A series of unfortunate events may have led to an albino red-tailed boa constrictor named "Lemony Snicket" disappearing from a North County museum. Officials with the EcoVivarium children's museum in Escondido, California believe Lemony disappeared on April 29 during a tour of the museum's Arthropod Jungle. During the tour, staff took Lemony out of its cage to show guests, before returning it to its enclosure and locking the gate.Unfortunately, a security camera facing Lemony's enclosure was damaged that same day and did not capture what could have happened.Staff said they fear the snake may have been stolen. They said a man in his 20s left the tour group and never returned shortly before the snake disappeared."We are all heartbroken, and just want him safely returned, no questions asked," the museum said of Facebook. The snake was rescued four-and-a-half years ago in San Diego from an owner who had neglected it.Lemony is about 7-feet long, and yellow and orange, and has a scar on its face.Anyone with any information as to the snake's whereabouts is asked to call EcoVivarium at 760-975-9690.The situation is similar to another missing reptile case recently in North San Diego County."Bubbles" the monitor lizard slinked away from Mike's Pets in Spring Valley in March. Mike Estevez, of the store, said getting the word out was key in Bubbles' return."It really helped a lot," Estevez said. "We got a lot of feedback and concern from people coming in."A radio listener who heard about Bubbles ended up safely locating the missing lizard several days later. 1677

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) - Over the weekend a horrified Fallbrook family discovered their truck destroyed and they believe football loyalties fueled the vicious attack.Just behind a swing set along Gird Road are some displays of Jesse Wilson's pride for his favorite team, the Kansas City Chiefs. His mailbox is adorned with the Chiefs logo and colors. "I'm a solid fan. Watched them ever since I was a kid," said Wilson. On Sunday, hours after he watched his team clobber the Oakland Raiders, someone did the same to his 2017 Dodge Ram Laramie.RELATED: Football stolen during NFL game returned to player after hunt"It's anger and confusion," said Wilson.Wilson discovered the destruction Monday morning. "Noticed my antenna was bent, and the truck looked lower than normal ... the tires were flat," said Wilson.A closer look revealed shattered windows, deep scratches, and mangled mirrors and wipers. Not far from the truck was his axe. The vandal had used the axe to chop holes in the side of the truck.RELATED: Teenage girl vanishes amid trail of alarming clues"Unbelievable ... When I opened the door, I was greeted with the fact that it looks like someone had a really good time inside with something sharp," said Wilson.Just about every surface was sliced or smashed, including the mirrors and stereo. Wilson's wife Kelly doesn't know anyone with a grudge against them, but she's certain of the motive."It's ridiculous, and it's stupid," she said. The truck's back window, covered by a Chiefs sticker, was crushed into bits. A plastic Chiefs decal on the back of the truck was carefully chiseled off. A Chiefs flag that had been hanging at the front of the home was found more than 100 feet away, shredded and next to the truck.RELATED: Young boys stung by wasp swarm at North County park"Absolutely it was a message," said Kelly Wilson. It was also a costly one. The truck is totaled."Makes me frustrated that something my husband loves so much could fuel so much hatred in someone else. It's a game. It's supposed to be fun," she said. From the glove compartment, the vandal also stole some 0 that had been set aside for an adopt-a-family program for the holidays. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 2265

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Three people are dead and two people were injured Friday when a bluff collapsed just north of Grandview Surf Beach in Encinitas, San Diego County Sheriff's deputies confirmed. The bluff fell about 3 p.m. near a lifeguard tower at the Grandview Beach staircase located in the 1700 block of Neptune Avenue, just below South Ponto State Beach. One person was flown to the hospital in critical condition. Officials closed part of Highway 101 temporarily Friday afternoon to land a life flight helicopter.Map of most recent San Diego County bluff collapsesTwo others suffered minor injuries and their conditions are unknown at this time. There were no children among the victims, deputies said during a news conference Friday.Search and rescue dogs are assisting crews to determine if anyone else may be trapped under the debris.SATURDAY PRESS CONFERENCE:One person who talked to 10News said he arrived at the beach moments after the collapse and saw crowds trying to clear rocks away from the collapse to save anyone who was trapped."It's just horrifying that the people underneath were there in the moment," said Fabian. "Let's just hope for the people."Watch live coverageSky10 video showed more than 20 deputies and rescue officials near the debris field moments after the disaster. Beach chairs and surfboards that had been positioned near the cliff were scattered as rescue teams began their work. The chunk of cliff that collapsed is about the size of a bus and is as heavy as a concrete wall, said geologist Dr. Pat Abbott. The area is 25 by 30 feet, lifeguard officials confirmed, adding that the debris reaches 10 feet at its highest point.Rising waves are creating a dangerous situation for first responders. The disaster happened about an hour and a half before low tide, with "one of the highest tides of the year" expected late Friday night, lifeguards said.RELATED: Encinitas bluffs are a trouble spot known to geologists"This will continue to the point where it becomes unsafe for teams to get in there and work," said Larry Giles of Encinitas Lifeguards.Soil experts were also concerned about a potential second collapse, but said homes on the cliff were not at risk.Officials requested heavy equipment to remove debris and "meticulously break it apart to look for anyone else."Lifeguards closed the beach from the Leucadia-Carlsbad border to just south of Grandview for their rescue effort.“No one woke up thinking this would happen," said a deputy on the scene. "We're going to do the best we can to get through this."Today, a bluff collapsed at approximately 3 p.m. near the 1700 block of Neptune Avenue north of Grandview Beach. The City’s Sheriff and first responders are on the scene assisting in rescue operations. One person is confirmed dead and people have been injured.
