Michael Cohen's stunning guilty plea last week ended months of speculation about the fate of President Donald Trump's longtime personal lawyer. And now, as Cohen waits for his sentencing hearing set for December, a source familiar with his thinking says "resignation" would be a fitting word to describe the 52-year-old's mindset -- acceptance that he is headed to prison in order to protect his family."He's very resigned to doing the time. He's resigned to the fact that he's going to go to jail for some time," the person said, adding that Cohen does not believe he will receive a presidential pardon from Trump. 622

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer announced that a citywide curfew will be extended through the weekend as unrest in the city reignited on Wednesday. The demonstrations were sparked by a grand jury announcement that charges would not be filed against the two officers who shot and killed Breonna Taylor during a March raid. The curfew will continue from 9 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. every day through Monday. The curfew does not apply to people commuting to work, house of worship for services or seeking medical attention for themselves or others. The city has also closed some of the city’s downtown government facilities through Monday morning. On Wednesday, 127 arrests were tied to demonstrations in the city. Amid the unrest, two Louisville Metro Police officers were wounded by a gunman. A suspect, Larynzo Johnson, was arrested on Wednesday. Johnson is accused of shooting the two officers who were patrolling demonstrations in the city. 936

Millions of Californians could face energy blackouts this week amid a historic heatwave — a situation described by energy officials as a "perfect storm."According to The Weather Channel, parts of California and the southwestern U.S. are in the midst of a heatwave that is pushing temperatures to, in some cases, 15 degrees above average. According to Weather Channel forecasts, the heatwave could stick around through the end of the workweek. The heatwave may have also produced one of the highest temperatures ever recorded on the planet Earth — a temperature reading from Death Valley on Sunday was recorded at 130 degrees, though it still needs to be verified by meteorologists. The high temperatures caused the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) to issue a State 3 emergency last Friday and Saturday — the first time the agency had done so in about 20 years. The decision led to some blackouts throughout the state over the weekend, prompting an angry response from Gov. Gavin Newsome."These blackouts, which occurred without warning or enough time for preparation, are unacceptable and unbefitting of the nation's largest and most innovative state," Newsom wrote in a letter to CAISO and other California energy agencies. The agency has warned that if the heatwave persists, it may need to continue rotating blackouts to millions of homes and businesses throughout the week to certain sections of the power grid to prevent overtaxing the system.CAISO has issued a Flex Alert throughout the state that is currently in effect until Wednesday. The alert calls on Californians to take certain steps to limit energy usage during peak hours of 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.Among the recommendations in the Flex Alert are:Setting air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees, if health permitsDeferring the use of major appliancesTurning off unnecessary lightsUnplugging unused electrical devicesClosing blinds and drapesUsing fans when possibleLimiting time the refrigerator door is open.In addition to threatening the power grid, California's heatwave has also sparked dozens of wildifires across the state. As of about noon on Tuesday, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection was battling 26 active wildfires, which have burned more than 200,000 acres of forest. 2283

Marc Short, the chief of staff for Vice President Mike Pence, has contracted COVID-19, according to The New York Times and Bloomberg.Pence's staff says the Vice President tested negative for the virus on Saturday.According to the Times, Pence's office released a statement Saturday night saying that even though Pence had close contact with Short in recent days, he "will maintain his schedule in accordance with the CDC guidelines for essential personnel.”The announcement came shortly after Bloomberg reported Saturday night that another one of Pence's top aides, Marty Obst, had also tested positive for the virus."Today, Marc Short, Chief of Staff to the Vice President, tested positive for COVID-19, began quarantine and assisting in the contact tracing process," a statement from Pence press secretary Devin O'Malley read, according to Axios. "Vice President Pence and Mrs. Pence both tested negative for COVID-19 today, and remain in good health. While Vice President Pence is considered a close contact with Mr. Short, in consultation with the White House Medical Unit, the Vice President will maintain his schedule in accordance with the CDC guidelines for essential personnel."Short and Obst are just the latest high-ranking White House officials to contract COVID-19. Earlier this month, President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump and their son, Barron, all announced that they had contracted COVID-19. Other top aides like press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, adviser Stephen Miller and former adviser Kellyanne Conway also tested positive for the virus. Most were in attendance at a White House event for the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett, where many guests were pictured indoors without masks. The outbreak in Pence's office comes as COVID-19 cases spike across the country. On Friday, the U.S. recorded a single-day record of new cases of the virus with nearly 84,000. 1901

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Police say 87 demonstrators who gathered at the home of Kentucky's attorney general to demand justice for Breonna Taylor have been arrested. News outlets report protesters with the social justice organization Until Freedom gathered Tuesday for a sit-in at the home of Daniel Cameron. Police say they were charged with the felony crime of "intimidating a participant in a legal process"; disorderly conduct, and trespassing. Taylor was fatally shot by police on March 13 during a narcotics investigation. Her death set off weeks of protests and calls for the officers to be charged. Among those arrested were Kenny Stills, a wide receiver for the Houston Texans, and Porsha Williams of "Real Housewives of Atlanta."Stills tweeted a picture of his mugshot. 785
