(CNS) - A shooting in El Cajon early Tuesday morning left a man dead, El Cajon police said.Officers responding to a report of gunfire found a man mortally wounded in the 1500 block of East Main Street in El Cajon about 1:30 a.m., according to police.The victim, whose identity was withheld pending family notification, died en route to a hospital, ECPD Lt. Kevin MacArthur said.No description of the suspected shooter was available as of early Tuesday afternoon, and the motive for the slaying was unknown. 531

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Grossmont College and the office of Senator Joel Anderson came together for the eighth year in a row to honor the victims of September 11th. The day before the ceremony, volunteers put up 2,977 flags one for each life taken that September morning. San Diego native and 9/11 survivor, Bill Hay, was the keynote speaker for the memorial. Hay was on the 55th floor of the north tower when the first plane hit.Hay is 89-years-old and a Marine veteran with two purple hearts. He says he shares his story every year because he doesn't want younger generations to forget about what happened. The ceremony included other speakers from Grossmont College, CAL-FIRE and students from Steele Canyon High School.  755

EL CAJON (KGTV) -- A motorcyclist who crashed into a parked truck on a residential street in Fletcher Hills has died, El Cajon police said Tuesday.Shortly after the crash, some off-duty nurses rushed to help the critically injured motorcyclist, identified Wednesday as 36-year-old Julian Garcia, allowing emergency crews to rush him to the hospital.Jennifer Lepari said she heard a “loud boom” on Valley Lake Drive near Valley Mill Road around 8:30 p.m. Monday. “It almost shook the house. It was really, really loud,” she said.Lepari and her husband Jerome are both nurses. Jerome quickly used his belt as a tourniquet on the rider’s leg to staunch the bleeding while Jennifer applied pressure and spoke with dispatchers, according to neighbors.“With the amount of blood he lost and the time it took [for emergency crews to arrive], even the cops said [the rider] wouldn’t have lasted if [Jerome] hadn’t done that,” Lepari said.El Cajon police say the motorcyclist struck a parked work truck on Valley Mill Road for unknown reasons. Investigators believe speed may have been a factor but the crash is still under investigation, Lt. Randy Soulard said.A third off-duty nurse who lives around the block also tended to the badly injured rider, neighbors said.“It was awesome to see the people with that sort of medical experience jump in and not hesitate,” said a neighbor named Lisa.Once police arrived, an officer applied a second tourniquet to the rider’s leg, Lt. "You just feel violated right away," said Jason Guthrie, owner of Chainline Bikes on Pioneer Way.On Sunday morning, he went to his shop to fetch a bike for a ride. "Came around and saw the cable had been pulled through the window. All the glass was here. My heart dropped. It was on the floor with the glass," said Guthrie.The intruder had tossed a large rock, smashing a side glass door. The alarm didn't go off. Once inside, the intruder sliced the security cable."There were four empty slots in the rack," said Guthrie.Four mountain bikes - three of them custom made - were missing, worth about ,000."For a small shop, a couple thousand dollars worth makes a huge difference ... keeps our lights on for the next month," said Guthrie.Among the bikes that vanished is "Mary." "Everybody knew the bike by name," said Guthrie.Painted by the shop, the bike became well known in the mountain biking community and the shop's mascot."Whenever I would go to bike parks from here up to Whistler, Canada, they would know my bike and not necessarily me," said Guthrie.Guthrie says one of the bikes had actually sold online the night it was stolen.
