CENTENNIAL, Colo. — The holiday shopping season is here. And, if we're going to be stuck inside our homes, we might as well make it fun.Get the family together for the newest competitive indoor game, created right here in Colorado. You're in good company this week with Shuffle Golf, which was developed in Centennial and is now available through Walmart's website.Just as the name suggests, it's a combination of shuffleboard and miniature golf."When people start playing, they realize how challenging the game is," said Jeff Storey, the founder of parent company i-Play. "But, the rules are so simple on how to learn."Prior to the pandemic, i-Play created interactive games for kids."We have these floor projection games, table projection games, that are all interactive," Storey said. But seeing a need for more at-home entertainment, and noticing a gap in the golf game market, Storey and his team entered Shuffle Golf into Walmart's Open Call for U.S.-manufactured products. It's an effort by the retail giant to inject millions into America's small businesses. Shuffle Golf won distribution out of 5,000 submissions."The buyer recognized the concept is cool," Storey said. "It's different. It's a quality game. It's made in America. And, that's exactly what Walmart is doing today."The game uses a vibrant carpet mat, which allows for two-way putting, has various scoring sections around the green, and includes negative scores for sand and water hazards. And, you can knock your opponents' ball off the course."It's a great educational tool for math for young kids," Storey said. "And, parents now are having to teach their kids and home school and so forth."But, Storey said the game is great for all ages and all skill levels. And, it can get competitive. It's teeing up the fun, just in time for the holidays."Now, (families) have a new game to play, outside your Bocce Ball, or Monopoly, or all these different traditional games," Storey said. "It's a new game for families to engage in."Shuffle Golf is available through Walmart.com. It will be on store shelves in the spring of 2021.i-Play is donating 10% of its profits from Shuffle Golf to Children’s Hospital Colorado. This story was first reported by Brian Sanders at KMGH in Denver, Colorado. 2263

CHERRY VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Apple Fire in Riverside County has almost doubled in the last day. As of 5:00 p.m. Sunday, it has grown to 20,516 acres, with 0% containment. Mandatory evacuations are in place for more than 7,000 people. Authorities believe this may have been caused by arson. This weekend, multiple San Diego fire agencies are helping fight the Apple Fire. Experts say our local agencies are equipped to support the fight in Riverside and any incidents at home. The conditions are almost too perfect for the raging Apple Fire."Fuel, weather, and topography - All three of those things come together in that part of the state," CAL FIRE San Diego Fire Captain, Issac Sanchez said. The Apple Fire is burning just north of the city of Beaumont in Riverside County. Sanchez says the flames are relentless, and crews on the ground need all the help they can get."Any agency, regardless of their size, cannot handle anything of this nature, in size and complexity," Sanchez said.Overnight, the fire erupted into the San Bernadino National Forest, which officially made it a federal incident. But multiple local crews from San Diego County are now at ground zero to help."It's not just a CAL FIRE show. It's not just a US Forest Service show," Sanchez said. "Everybody is on deck. Everybody is contributing. Everybody is engaged right now."Some of the local crews assisting in Riverside County include San Diego Fire-Rescue, Poway Fire Department, Coronado Fire Department, and the North County Fire District.Early Sunday afternoon, maintenance crews were doing final checks for CAL FIRE San Diego's air fleet, stationed at the Ramona Airport. These are valuable assets on stand-by to help attack the flames from above.ABC 10News learned that just before 3 pm Sunday, one of CAL FIRE San Diego's small tactical planes out of Ramona were dispatched for emergency assistance. It is now guiding large air tankers above the Apple Fire. But with so many local resources being taken out of the mix, many wonder if we are prepared if something like the Apple Fire erupts now in San Diego county."We never will give more than what we can afford to give," Sanchez answered.Sanchez says allocating resources is carefully calculated. Even if local crews are being good neighbors to assist others, crews here are still ready."We can still maintain an aggressive initial attack, and that is absolutely what we will do locally should any fire break out," Sanchez said.CAL FIRE reminds us that it is vital to be fire ready, especially during these dry, hot summers. 2568

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — A German father and son had the summer vacation of a lifetime spanning seven countries, eight cities, and eight theme parks.Better yet, they pulled off the feat in a mere 13 days.Dieter Deussen and his five-year-old son, Julian, finished the last leg of their journey to visit all Legoland theme parks in the world Tuesday. Deussen began the trek wanting to give his son a special experience before he starts school for the first time in September, according to Legoland.RELATED: Legoland offers guests free admission on their birthday in 2019His son being a big Lego fan, Deussen suggested the global tour. The trip took the father eight months of planning, hours he said he would never trade. “100 percent it was worth it. To see Julian smile so much at every park and interact with children from around the world, regardless of the language difference, was amazing for me to see. I would absolutely do it again," Deussen said.In less than two weeks, the duo completed a world tour of all eight of the theme parks:June 27 – LEGOLAND Windsor June 28 – LEGOLAND BillundJune 30 – LEGOLAND DeutschlandJuly 1 – LEGOLAND DubaiJuly 3 – LEGOLAND MalaysiaJuly 5 – LEGOLAND JapanJuly 7 – LEGOLAND CaliforniaJuly 8-9 – LEGOLAND FloridaIn Carlsbad, the father and son began their stay at the Legoland Castle Hotel, before exploring Miniland U.S.A, the deep sea on the Lego City Deep Sea Adventure Submarine ride, and meeting a throng of Lego characters. And, of course, playing with a bunch of Legos.RELATED: Recreation Destination: San Diego ranks at top of U.S. citiesLegoland says the pair's journey isn't quite complete though. Casper has mastered how to sell mattresses in a box online. Now the company will test its strength at the store.CEO Philip Krim said Casper will open 200 stores across the country in the next three years. The Wall Street Journal first reported the company's plans."It will give us a footprint to help educate consumers," he said in an interview. The announcement is a clear signal that Casper, an online startup that launched in 2014, believes a physical presence is still a crucial part of retail.Casper has recently rolled out 19 pop-up stores in markets like New York and San Francisco, and Krim said they are beating expectations, convincing the company to expand deeper."The presence of physical stores increases both offline as well as online sales," said Barbara Kahn, a marketing professor at Wharton.A permanent store footing will help Casper build loyalty with current customers, gain exposure among new shoppers, and increase impulse buys that can only come from browsing physical locations, she said.In addition, people usually want to try out mattresses and bedding before they make a final purchase, and stores will give Casper another way to appeal to them. The plan marks a new front for Casper, which broke into an industry controlled by brick-and-mortar retailers like Mattress Firm and Sleepy's.Casper distinguished itself by pricing the only mattress it sold at the time below its competitors, as well as offering free delivery and a 100-day trial period at home."Consumers have long gone into traditional mattress stores feeling uninformed and have been subject to ridiculous price points," said Bob Phibbs, CEO of the consultancy Retail Doctor.Casper offers just three varieties of mattresses, which gives it an advantage over rival mattress stores that offer a confusing array of soft, firm, foam, springy, and everything in between, Phibbs noted.Casper gained attention online with customers posting videos of themselves unboxing mattresses on social media, racking up 0 million in sales during its first full year.As it continued selling direct-to-consumer online, moving into bed frames, sheets, pillows, and dog mattresses, Casper partnered with retailers like Nordstrom, Target, and West Elm to increase distribution.Stores will help Casper stand out in a crowded mattress environment. Digital rivals such as Purple, Leesa, Tuft & Needle, and Yogabed have cropped up, while legacy retailers have taken a page from Casper, introducing delivery in a box."By opening stores, they are upping the ante to compete, and less well-funded competitors may be at a disadvantage," said Kahn.Amazon has also become a huge mattress player, increasing its sales in 2017 by 82% from the prior year, estimated research firm One Click Retail. Casper is only one of dozens of mattress brands Amazon sells. As Casper moves into brick-and-mortar territory, Mattress Firm is retrenching. Mattress Firm has closed 200 stores in 2018, according to Coresight Research, a retail think tank.Reuters reported this week that it was weighing a bankruptcy filing to close some of its 3,000 stores that were losing money. The company declined comment through a spokesperson.Casper is playing a different game than Mattress Firm, though.Online retailers like Casper and Warby Parker want stores to help it achieve scale advantages, while legacy retailers are trying to escape malls and invest in delivery and supply chains to survive online, said Jefferies analyst Randal Konik. 3489
