SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In 2004, San Diego taxpayers approved a transportation tax increase that earmarked 0 million for bike projects for more bike lanes, safety features on the roads for cyclists and foot traffic, and new walking trails.Friday, SANDAG said it's going to need more. Officials said rising construction costs have called for an additional million for the projects, many of which have been started.The money would come from funds already allocated for these types of projects.RELATED: Compromise proposed for 30th Street bike lanes in North ParkCritics of the increase in funding argue only one percent of San Diegans use bikes and costs of .5 million per mile built for these bike lanes is unjustified.The San Diego Bike Coalition says the funding is needed to provide San Diegans with more transportation options, reduce auto dependency, and increase safety of bicyclists. They add that an expanded bike network will help the county move closer toward greenhouse emissions goals.SANDAG has been working toward the biking goals since 2013, when the agency approved a 0 million Bike Early Action Plan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local supporters of both Joe Biden and Donald Trump were watching the election vote count closely throughout Friday.Ellen Nash, who heads the San Diego chapter of the Black American Association of Califorina, a minority advocacy group, put up her Biden/Harris yard sign about a month ago.During the election season, she helped organize a voter registration campaign. Since election night, it's been a constant case of the nerves."Incredibly excited, praying night and day," said Nash.Her eyes have been glued to the television and coverage of the vote count. Throughout Friday, her candidate edged closer to being declared the winner."I will feel relieved that the trauma is over. I'm speaking as a black woman who has been under significant trauma the last four years, in terms of some of the language and behavior of the leader of the free world. Hopeful change is coming," said Nash.There is no questioning her dislike of President Trump, but on this day, she is focused on the country’s future."I believe Biden can bring this country together. I believe he can help us heal as a nation," said Nash.It's a different opinion for local Trump supporter, Blake Marnell.During the campaign, Marnell garnered national attention for wearing a brick wall suit, illustrating his support of President Trump’s border security policy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Memorial Day Weekend DUI arrests are down in San Diego County compared to last year, according to California Highway Patrol. In San Diego County, 42 people were arrested between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Sunday. By this time on Memorial Day Weekend in 2018, 57 people were arrested. One person died this weekend in San Diego County due to a DUI crash, tying it with last year. Statewide, 741 people have so far been arrested for driving under the influence. By this time last year, 674 people were arrested for DUI. So far this weekend, DUI-related crashes have claimed 18 lives throughout the state compared with 14 by this time last year. 668

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just after President Donald Trump addressed the nation about border security, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Barrio Logan held an event to recruit volunteers to help at asylum shelters. “The primary purpose was to let people know from a more personal perspective what’s taking place with the caravan,” said Father John Auther, pastor at Our Lady. The volunteers work with the San Diego Rapid Response Network to help the migrants who make it across the border.Several people who had volunteered in the past got up to speak about their experiences. “If I thought I was humble, it’s made me more humble. It’s rewarding,” said Martha Carriedo. She has volunteered for months at the shelter which is housed in an undisclosed location in San Diego. It serves as a temporary refuge for asylum seekers who have made it through the border legally but need help finding a way to meet with friends or family. Or if they don’t have any connections in the U.S., to find a sponsor or longer-term housing option while they wait for their asylum case to be heard. Father John estimates they have helped 4,000 migrants since October. 1145
