A new semester started on Monday. Following the flag raising and national anthem, Wen said: "Students and teachers, it's been exactly 110 days since the May 12 earthquake. Beichuan survives, and the Beichuan Middle School survives. We stand on our own feet, tough and unafraid.     "The quake brought considerable misfortunes, and it brought experience and strength, too. Now we know one thing, and it's that as long as we choose to confront adversity with courage, we will surely overcome any disaster.     "As we hold this ceremony, we can never forget the students and teachers who died in the disaster ... BEIJING, June 26 (Xinhua) -- The headquarters for quake-relief command of the State Council, China's Cabinet, on Thursday called for priority in reconstructing public facilities such as schools and hospitals in the country's southwestern quake-hit region.     At a regular meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, the headquarters clarified the main tasks of the relief and reconstruction in the quake-hit zone, giving priority to rebuilding and quality of public facilities that were closely related to the lives of local residents. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) speaks during the 22nd meeting of the headquarters for quake-relief command of the State Council, in Beijing, capital of China, June 26, 2008. Reconstruction should also pay great attention to the preservation of traditional and cultural relics.     When the local governments help farmers rebuild homes, officials should fully respect their will and mobilize more social aid, as well as governmental subsidies, the headquarters ordered.     It suggested that those involved in the rebuilding of transport, communication, energy and other infrastructure should first resume their operation and properly arrange their location in accordance with local geological conditions. The headquarters stressed the seriously-destroyed factories be rearranged to resume production in new sites and for the recovery of local agriculture as soon as possible.     It reminded all quake-relief officials the reconstruction would be long-term and a tough task for governments as it required scientific planning and an orderly procedure.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares sank to a 15-month low on Tuesday in very low volume, amid weak investor confidence.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.76 percent to 2,794.75, its 10th loss in a row. The Shenzhen Component Index fared worse, sinking 4.03 percent, or 395.77 points, to 9,429.50.     The Hushen 300 Index, which reflects about 60 percent of the combined market value in Shanghai and Shenzhen, closed at 2,842.68 points, down 109.57 points, or 3.71 percent. Investors read information at a stock trading hall in Shanghai, China, June 10, 2008. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.76 percent to 2,794.75, its 10th loss in a row    Total turnover was just 67.5 billion yuan (9.65 billion U.S. dollars).     Financial, oil and petrochemical, real estate, mining, transportation and broker stocks led the plunge.     China Merchant Property, for example, dipped 7.36 percent to 16.12 yuan. The Shanghai index slid through the 2,800-point mark, touching 2,799.33 points at midday, shortly after the National Bureau of Statistics said the growth rate of fixed-asset investment slowed in the first five months.     Urban fixed-asset investment rose 25.6 percent year-on-year to 4.026 trillion yuan in the first five months of 2008. The growth rate was 0.3 percentage points below the same period last year and 0.1 percentage point less than the January-April period this year.     Analysts said the market was also being undermined by surging world oil prices, weakening regional economies and the government's efforts to curb liquidity and tame inflation.     The People's Bank of China, the central bank, earlier this month lifted the bank reserve ratio by a full percentage point to 17.5 percent.

GUANGZHOU/NANJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The first cross-Strait weekend chartered flight from China's mainland to Taiwan took off at 6:31 a.m. from Guangzhou, capital city of the southern Guangdong Province early Friday morning.     More than 100 mainland tourists aboard the Airbus A330 became the first group of people on a sight-seeing tour allowed to Taiwan amid warming cross-Strait ties. The flight has 258 passengers.     The historic flight by China Southern Airlines (CSA) is scheduled to land at Taipei Taoyuan Airport in Taiwan at 8:10 a.m. after a 1,124-km journey.     "I have been expecting to visit Taiwan, the Treasure Island, and my dream will finally come true today," mainland tourist Shi Anwei told Xinhua before boarding the plane. "I was too excited to sleep last night."     Following suit was a flight from Xiamen of eastern Fujian Province that took off at 7:16 a.m. The flight, MF881 by the Xiamen Airlines with 203 passengers, is expected to arrive at the Songshan Airport of Taipei at 8:51 a.m.     Each passenger witnessing the historical moment received a gift package from the airlines, which enclosed a model plane and map of Taiwan.     At a separate ceremony in East China's Nanjing City marking thecity as the fifth new city to conduct the cross-Strait chartered flight, Zheng Lizhong, mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS) Executive Vice Chairman, said the start of the weekend chartered flight and beginning of the mainland tourists' visit to Taiwan "is destined to open a new chapter in the cross-Straits cultural and economic communications."     A high-ranking mainland aviation official said that since Shanghai was chosen as the first city for cross-Strait flight operation five years ago, "there has been a small step each year, but they have amounted to a major step in the past five years."     "The ever more frequent and convenient flights across the Straits are not only improved means of transportation, they are also an emotional and cultural bridge for the people, and changed the way of thinking of both sides," the official said.     However, he said, real direct flight hadn't been realized yet as all of the planes flew to Taipei by way of Hong Kong.     Quoting Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the great pioneer of Chinese democratic revolution, the official said, "the real success is still in front and we need to work harder."     The first chartered flight from Nanjing started at 8:05 a.m.     Some 760 Chinese mainland tourists from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Xiamen and Guangzhou started the first weekend charter flight to Taiwan on Friday, three weeks after the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation met last month.
