SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new scam appears to target local Amazon customers worried about being victims of package theft.Neighbors at the Escala community in Mission Valley say package thefts have been an ongoing problem for the last few years.Could the trend be providing fuel for a scam? A recent encounter at the housing complex could point to a new method by scammers.Adriana Alberdi, who has lived at the complex for a decade, said she and other residents received an email from the property management company describing a recent visitor.According to the email, the man — described as blond and in his early 20s — was wearing a lanyard connected to a tablet. He had business cards and claimed to work at Amazon. At one point, the man went to the on-site office pushing to install an Amazon Key device in homes. The new service allows Amazon to gain access to a home or car to deliver packages and keep them from getting stolen.The email says the man was "pushy" and "argumentative," before finally leaving. Amazon confirmed the man was not an employee."It's like you're getting robbed of your security. You don't know who to trust anymore," said Alberdi. "This is new. I have never heard about this."Amazon says their employees don't go door-to-door. Anyone interested in Amazon Key has to contact the company by phone or through their website. 1354

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A lawsuit was filed on Monday in San Diego County Superior Court against the County of San Diego, Registrar of Voters and other entities related to the ongoing battle over the future of the Julian volunteer fire department. Attorney and mayoral candidate Cory Briggs filed the suit and told 10News that the claim is that a group of former volunteer fire department board members made the decision to dissolve the department in secret meetings, and the County allegedly let it happen. For the past two years, locals have been in a contentious battle over the future of San Diego County's last all-volunteer fire department. Many residents believe the County should take over the department because it has more resources and money.Opponents don't trust the County and think that the department's volunteers can do a better job on their own. This morning, an independent regulatory agency conducted a final vote in favor of dissolving the department. A hearing on this new lawsuit is scheduled for Wednesday morning. 1041

First, around 4 a.m. Saturday, surveillance video shows a man igniting an explosive against the window of Blackwater Tattoo Studio. Then, Sunday around 11:30 p.m., another man rides by on a skateboard, throwing a battery like cylinder through the same window. The owner, Mike Kellerman, shared surveillance video with 10News of both incidents. RELATED: Increased police presence in Ocean Beach following series of crimesThe first video shows a man skateboarding to the front of the business, taping something to the front window, and lighting it on fire. Moments later, the device explodes and blasts a hole in the window. "I expected the first one; the second one kind of pushed the limit," Kellerman said, adding he is not going anywhere. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diegan who was killed in the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar was honored Thursday on the anniversary of the attack, both in Coronado and Thousand Oaks.Justin Meek's family attended a large public dedication ceremony for the Healing Garden in Thousand Oaks, a park and permanent memorial site with 12 stone slabs representing the victims."It's not that we are moving on, but that we are moving forward," Meek's father Roger said in an interview.RELATED: Coronado native among victims of the Thousand Oaks bar shootingMeek, a promoter and occasional security guard at the bar, broke out windows so others could escape when gunfire erupted last November, according to family members. Witnesses said Meek had his hands outstretched, trying to block the gunman when he was shot."All Justin ever wanted to do was serve and protect, and that's what he did that night," said his mother Laura Lynn Meek.RELATED: Family remembers local Borderline shooting victimMeek had plans to join the Coast Guard, and he worked as a lifeguard in Coronado. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new study says that Millennials are leaving their jobs mainly because they're looking for more meaning in what they do.The study, by the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, found that 51.9% of Millennials say they're thinking of leaving their job in the next six months.Of the ones who felt that way, their main reason for wanting to leave is a lack of meaning or purpose in their current job."They want to understand exactly what product or service their company provides and how it makes their community better," says Chamber VP of Research Sean Kerafin, who wrote the study."They can't find all of their value in a job simply from a paycheck," Kerafin says. "They have to understand the bigger picture."Kerafin says that's an essential lesson for local employers to know since Millennials make up 39.7% of the workforce. That's more than any other generation.Kerafin says companies need to emphasize a culture that is "Purpose-Driven" over one that prioritizes profit if they want to attract and retain Millennials.Other findings in the study, which is based on interviews with 400 Millennials in San Diego, show that they want to work for a company where there is an opportunity to grow from within.The survey found that 22% of Millennials cite professional development as a top driver of satisfaction, compared to just 5.8% who cite office perks."They come from a generation of participation trophies and being told they can do anything they put their mind to, and they believe it," Kerafin says. "The truth is they can if they're supported."Kerafin says companies that have excellent mentoring and development programs are more likely to keep Millennials around longer.The study also found that 65.3% of Millennials are satisfied with their job. But even that may not be enough to keep them in San Diego.According to the survey, 44% of Millennials are "very likely" to leave San Diego in the next two years. They say a lack of affordable housing is the main reason.The Chamber says local government leaders can help businesses by incentivizing more housing. 2087
