LAS VEGAS — For the first time in 20 years, the Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for the treatment of the flu.  The antiviral drug, called Xofluza, is a single dose treatment.  It is for patients who are 12 or older.  The drug must be taken within 48 hours of symptoms, according to the F.D.A. "Very exciting that we have another drug on the market," said Dr. Daliah Wachs.Xofluza is said to be as effective as Tamiflu in alleviating symptoms.  "Do I think it's a lifesaver? Potentially yes," said Dr. Wachs.Unlike earlier drugs, Xofluza is expected to work against drug-resistant strains. It will also shorten the length of the flu."The longer you have the flu, the more you are at risk for complications," said Dr. Wachs.Doctors say it is still critically important for everyone to get vaccinated, especially children and the elderly.  900

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving drunk in the death of a motorcycle officer with the California Highway Patrol, officials said Sunday.Michael Callahan of Winchester was booked on the charges in the death of California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Licon, said Officer Steve Carapia.Callahan is suspected of driving drunk Saturday afternoon when he crossed over the right shoulder of Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore, crashing into Licon and a car he had pulled over for speeding.Licon died at a nearby hospital. Inmate records show he has a court appearance set for Wednesday.Licon was a 27-year veteran of the agency and is survived by his wife, daughter and stepdaughter.Licon's body was taken to the coroner's office on Saturday night in a slow and somber procession.Acting Gov. Eleni Kounalakis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the state Capitol, and the California Highway Patrol is holding a bell tribute ceremony in his honor on Monday.Carapia, who knew Licon for six years, said the sergeant was well-liked and known for his work ethic and a distinct and quirky high-pitched laugh."He had a great sense of humor," Carapia said. "You could hear him laughing from the sergeant's office. You could hear him coming down the hallway ... Just an all-around great human being."He said Licon loved his job and the fact that his office was on a motorcycle."This is a tough one," he said. (KGTV) -- The woman authorities say was hit and killed by a suspected DUI driver Monday evening has been identified as 41-year-old Susana Gotell. Throughout the day Tuesday, flowers brought to the area by residents adorned the place where Gotell was killed. Meanwhile, the Santee man who officers say was driving under the influence could face first-degree murder charges.CHP says the driver, Michael Woodfill, 46, hit a fence on North Woodside Avenue around 6:30 p.m. When Woodfill tried to get back onto the road, he overcorrected, crossing both lanes and hitting the jogger.RELATED: Woman hit, killed by suspected DUI driver in LakesideOfficers returned to the scene Tuesday to reconstruct the scene. Woodfill had a DUI back in 2016 after officers say he was found with an excessive blood alcohol level. One month later, his license was reinstated with restrictions. Earlier this year, Woodfill’s license was also suspended after officials say he had no insurance, but was later reinstated five days later.When the crash happened Monday, Woodfill was driving on a restricted license. Woodfill is currently being held without bail after being arrested for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter. 1256

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A car burst into flames after a crash in La Mesa early Sunday morning. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened on SR-94 near the 125 before 3:30 a.m. CHP says the driver was speeding on SR-94 west when he tried merging onto the 125 on-ramp. The man then lost control and flipped several times before the car went up in flames. Witnesses stopped to help, but the man was able to get out of the vehicle on his own. The driver was able to escape the crash with only minor injuries. CHP says he is being checked for DUI. Traffic was shut down on the 125 on-ramp for a short time after the crash, but was reopened before 6 a.m. 676
