GUANGZHOU, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Devastating mud-slides triggered by historic rainfalls were blamed for the heavy casualty toll -- 70 dead and 65 missing -- in south China's Guangdong Province when typhoon Fanapi battered the region earlier this week, a government report said Saturday.The loss caused by mud-flows and landslides in Guangdong's mountainous western region is "very serious", said a disaster assessment report conducted by provincial disaster relief authorities. Since torrential rainstorm brought by Typhoon Fanabi hit Guangdong this week and caused serious waterlog, China's army aviation regiment has bridged an air lifeline by airdropping daily necessities to disaster-stricken people.Xinhua reporters riding helicopters above the disaster zones saw a number of brown stripes of mud-slides laced the otherwise green mountain slopes. Flood-waters continued to flow down through the mud-slide tracks.Large swaths of farmlands were submerged in flood-waters while piles of rocks, debris, and trash dotted the basin at the foot of the mountains.By 6 p.m. Friday, about 99,500 people in Guangdong were evacuated for the Fanapi-brought disasters. Some 3,765 houses collapsed, 42,190 hectares of farmland were damaged, and the economic loss reached 2.4 billion yuan, latest official data show.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south. No casualties have been reported in Fujian.In the country's most devastating mud-slides in decades, nearly 2,000 people were killed in Zhouqu, Guansu Province after days of torrential rains poured the region in early August this year.

HANGZHOU, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 1,000 graves were damaged in a mud flow that hit east China's Zhejiang Province Saturday after torrential rains, caused by tropical storm Meranti, triggered landslides, a debris flow and delayed flights.However, no causalities have been reported as of 11 p.m. after Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang, was hit by nine landslides and a debris flow, said Zhejiang flood control officials.After the mud flow damaged 952 graves at the Meinushan Cemetery in Binjiang District, the district government ordered work crews to relocate exposed remains to safe places and reinforce existing graves, said officials.Torrential rains have been pounding the city since 4 a.m. Officials reported that by 7 a.m. the rainfall has reached 232 mm, a rarely seen accumulation in only three hours.In Shanghai, more than 300 outgoing flights, both domestic and international, were delayed for more than 30 minutes as of 5 p.m. at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.However, no flights have yet been canceled, according to airport security staff.Also, inbound flights have not been seriously affected, with fewer than 10 flights being delayed prior to landing, they said.Additionally, flights were not affected at the other civilian airport, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States Monday underscored their close economic relationship and called for its healthy growth."China and the United States share very close economic ties," Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan told a U.S. delegation led by two Missouri senators - Christopher Bond and Claire McCaskill.Wang said bilateral cooperation in trade, economy, investment and finance generate substantial benefits for both peoples."Both sides should work together to create a sound environment for a positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship in the 21st century," Wang said.Bond and McCaskill echoed Wang's comments, calling on the two countries to oppose trade protectionism.On global economy, Wang said the recovery of the global economy would be bumpy."All countries are confronted with the common challenge of seeking robust, sustainable and balanced economic growth."Wang also said the Chinese government would "make efforts to strike a balance between maintaining steady and fast economic growth with the restructuring of the economy and the curbing of inflation."The two senators are leading a delegation of nearly 20 leaders from a variety of Missouri businesses, trade unions and universities.During their stay in Beijing, the delegation will meet with officials from the commerce, foreign affairs, civil aviation and agriculture departments.They will also travel to Shanghai on east China's seaboard, where they will call on local officials and tour the ongoing World Expo.
