SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of two children killed in a Rancho Bernardo condo fire last month wants to meet the person who called 911, a family friend says.7-year-old Isabella Lopez and her 10-year-old brother Christos died in a fire at Bernardo Terrace, October 28.The children’s funeral is November 10 and the friend who has been helping plan it says the kids’ mom wants to thank the 911 caller for giving her a final moment with her dying son.RELATED: Two children dead, father in critical condition after Rancho Bernardo fire“She didn’t get it with her daughter, but she got it with her son and that means the world to her,“ said Sam Trink, “If they didn’t call when they did, she would not have gotten an extra three minutes with her son.”The funeral is being held at Grace Point church in Del Mar Heights. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Cabrillo National Monument will extend its opening hours until sunset on Fridays through Sundays in August.The national monument is currently in a phased re-opening. All outdoor areas, trails, and restrooms are open, but indoor areas like exhibits and the lighthouse are closed due to coronavirus restrictions.Normal operating hours for the area are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the tidepools closing at 4:30 p.m. The extended hours will give visitors a chance to take in views of the Pacific Ocean and San Diego during sunset. The monument's tidepool area will also be open until 30 minutes before sunset.Visitors can also get Junior Ranger books and badges, maps, and visitor information at an outdoor station near the visitor center.Officials encourage guests to continue wearing face coverings and physical distance from anyone no apart of their household while visiting.Annual park passes can still be purchased online here. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Highway Patrol said a person arrested at gunpoint on Interstate 15 in San Diego Thursday was suspected of driving illegally in the HOV lane and leading an officer on a pursuit.The chase happened on southbound I-15 just south of Aero Dr. at 5:30 p.m.Officers said the driver was in the high-occupancy vehicle lane and failed to pull over, leading to the brief pursuit.There are no reports of any injuries or a reason why the driver did not yield for the traffic stop.10News is monitoring developments in the story. 555

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Confederate monument at the center of an emotional debate has been removed from inside a city-owned cemetery in San Diego."It's a relief. I'm glad," said Amanda Bergara.Amid the recent protests aimed at racial injustice, Bergara was one of nearly 2,800 people to sign an online petition calling on San Diego's mayor to take down a confederate monument from inside Mount Hope Cemetery."It's a symbol of hate and disrespect for those who fought with their lives to end slavery," said Bergara.RELATED: Online petition seeks removal of Confederate memorial in San Diego cemeteryBuried in the cemetery are both Union and Confederate soldiers, who later lived in San Diego. The memorial, erected in 1948, names General Stonewall Jackson. In June, ABC 10News discovered the stone on the monument heavily damaged, with vandalism an ongoing issue. Unlike other Confederate markers removed in San Diego, the plot on which the monument sits is privately owned, and the city has maintained its hands are tied. The owner, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and supporters have said such markers are monuments to history.In the end, a city spokesperson says it was removed weeks ago at the request of the Confederate group, presumably to protect it from vandals. The monument is being stored by the city."Hopefully ending the hurt and pain for those who would have seen it and felt that hurt and pain. I hope it never sees the light of day," said Bergara.Not all the hurt is gone. A flagpole remains, along with a marker that includes the name, Stonewall Jackson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thanksgiving with the Salvation Army will be different in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic."We knew that we were going to do something," says Captain Sean Kelsley, who oversees the Salvation Army East County Operations. "The question was, what would it look like?"For the past 30 years, the Salvation Army held large, family-style gatherings to feed people experiencing homelessness, the disabled, and families in need at Golden Hall for Thanksgiving. They plan for 1,800 people, plus volunteers.But a gathering of 2,000+ people is strictly forbidden under California and San Diego County COVID-19 guidelines.In its place, the Salvation Army will offer "grab-and-go" style meals at four locations around the county."We're just glad to be able to be here," says Captain Kelsey.
