The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, Long Island's largest, has filed for bankruptcy, according to the diocese.Reverend John Barres, the bishop of Rockville Centre, announced the "difficult" news in a letter posted on the diocese's Twitter account Thursday.Barres said the diocese filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code earlier in the morning.The bishop said the decision comes after more than 200 lawsuits alleging sexual abuse were filed against the Diocese of Rockville Centre in the year since the passage of the Child Victims Act. "That is why we created the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program in 2017."The reverend said that program has helped approximately 350 survivors of sexual abuse so far, but has also depleted the diocese's financial resources."We will work diligently with all survivors, creditors and ministries to maintain open communication while we work toward our goal of completing a settlement and a restructuring plan that includes a comprehensive resolution for those suffering survivors," the bishop wrote. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed an executive order on Thursday that granted pardons to people who have been convicted of possessing one ounce or less of marijuana. “We are finally cleaning up some of the inequities of the past by pardoning 2,732 convictions for Coloradans who simply had an ounce of marijuana or less," Polis said. "It’s ridiculous how being written up for smoking a joint in the 1970s has followed some Coloradans throughout their lives and gotten in the way of their success."This pardon applies to all state-level convictions of possession for one ounce or less of marijuana. Polis said too many Coloradans have "been followed their entire lives by a conviction for something that is no longer a crime, and these convictions have impacted their job status, housing, and countless other areas of their lives."In June, Polis signed the bipartisan HB 20-1424 Social Equity Licensees In Regulated Marijuana, which was sponsored by Rep. James Coleman, Sen. Julie Gonzales and Sen. Vicki Marble, including an amendment sponsored by Sen. Gonzales. This authorizes the governor to grant pardons to people who were convicted of possessing up to two ounces of marijuana. Individuals who fall in this category don't need to apply for the pardon. Those who were convicted of municipal marijuana crimes, or individuals arrested or issued a summons without a conviction, aren't included in the pardons. This new law went into effect in October. JOSHUA TREE, Cali. – Scientists say climate change could kill off California’s iconic Joshua trees completely. “The future for Joshua trees might be a little bleak and we know that,” said University of California Riverside biologist Lynn Sweet, Ph.D. Sweet says these trees, which have been on the planet for more than 2.5 million years, could soon be extinct due to warming weather. Her team of scientists released a new study showing the impacts of climate change on California’s high desert -- saying as the Earth gets hotter and gets less rain, it will be harder for these trees to survive. “Joshua trees need really special conditions in order to germinate and grow,” Sweet said. “And those conditions might happen less and less frequently.” Sweet predicts Joshua trees could be extinct within the next 50 years. “We’re looking at the future of maybe keeping 20 percent of the Joshua trees if we really get our acts together,” she said. “And we’re looking at less than 1 percent of Joshua tree habitat remaining in the park if we don’t do something about climate change.” Some visitors say they are already seeing the change. “The Joshua trees don’t look happy,” tourist Jean Blattner said. “They seem to be in the park area suffering.” Blattner has been visiting Joshua Tree National Park for the past 30 years and says the conditions are getting worse. “They’re not as full; they don’t seem to have the glisten that they used to when the sun shined on them before,” she said. Not everyone, however, everyone is buying it. “Even though it looks a little dry it’s still full of life,” said Nelson Perez, who has lived in Joshua Tree for 20 years. Perez supports science but doesn’t believe that these trees could be completely wiped off the planet by the end of the century. “I don’t think it’s to an extent that a lot of the climate changers beliefs are so I’m kind of in the middle,” he said. Sweet, however, says science supports her findings and encourages people to think about how their carbon footprint impacts the environment. “So, the degree to which the Joshua Tree is in trouble is really up to us,” she said. “If we can make a difference, we can make a difference for these trees.” 2219
