SEATTLE, Wash. — MacKenzie Scott, the former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, says she has given away .1 billion in the past four months to hundreds of organizations as part of a giving pledge she announced last year.The Seattle Times reports Scott announced her pandemic-era philanthropy in a Medium post Tuesday, writing that the pandemic has substantially increased the wealth of billionaires, while things have gotten worse for women, people of color and those living in poverty.The philanthropist and author says she asked a team of advisers to help her “accelerate” her 2020 giving with immediate help to those financially gutted by the pandemic.She says the team used a data-driven approach, identifying organizations specifically in communities with high food insecurity, racial inequity and other factors.As a result, Scott says billions of dollars in “gifts” have been given to 384 organizations across all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C.“Some are filling basic needs: food banks, emergency relief funds, and support services for those most vulnerable,” wrote Scott. “Others are addressing long-term systemic inequities that have been deepened by the crisis: debt relief, employment training, credit and financial services for under-resourced communities, education for historically marginalized and underserved people, civil rights advocacy groups, and legal defense funds that take on institutional discrimination.”Click here to learn more about which organizations benefited from Scott’s donations. 1534

SEATTLE (AP) — Researchers say a London man appears to be free of the AIDS virus after a stem cell transplant. It's the second such success including "Berlin patient" Timothy Ray Brown.Such transplants are dangerous and have failed in other patients. The new findings were published online Monday by the journal Nature.The London patient has not been identified. He was diagnosed with HIV in 2003. He developed cancer and agreed to a stem cell transplant to treat the cancer in 2016.His doctors found a donor with a gene mutation that confers natural resistance to HIV.The transplant changed the London patient's immune system, giving him the donor's HIV resistance. 674

(KGTV) — San Marcos is taking a stricter stance on pet control.A newly passed ordinance allows the city to label people “irresponsible pet owners” and levy harder penalties.The city or the San Diego County Humane Society can impound the animals of people who are declared “irresponsible owners” under the ordinance and ban hem from owning any animals for up to three years.According to the rules, an “irresponsible owner” is an individual who has received three of more citations in the last two years for an unrestrained animal, guard dog, dangerous animal or nuisance violation.Dangerous animals per the ordinance are those that have attacked a person or another domestic animal two times within four years, or have injured or killed a person once within four years. 795

John Lewis crossed Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge for the final time Sunday as remembrances continue for the civil rights icon.A processional with Lewis’ casket was carried across the Selma bridge where he and other civil rights marchers were beaten 55 years ago on “Bloody Sunday,” a key event in the fight for voting rights for African Americans.Lewis will lie in repose at the Alabama Capitol on Sunday afternoon.He will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol next week before his private funeral Thursday at Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, which the Rev. SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) --  A man is in the hospital tonight after trying to save his dogs in an apartment fire. The Santee Villas Apartments were roaring in flames Thursday night. One of the residents headed directly into the danger zone trying to save his two chihuahua. Melanie Jaracz watched in horror as her neighbor risked his life climbing through a window."They busted out the windows to that," said Jaracz. "He tried climbing through that and they kept dragging him back. Nobody could get him to come out because he was so worried about his animals."Santee fire crews say it started in a bottom unit and quickly spread to three others around it. First responders tried to revive one of the dogs but it was too late. The man was taken to the hospital to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.  887
