ARCADIA (CNS) - Horse-racing fans and animal advocates calling for a ban on the sport were expected at Santa Anita Park Saturday for the biggest day of the park's racing calendar, with the million Santa Anita Derby headlining a 7-race schedule amid an ongoing controversy over a recent spike in horse deaths at the famed track.The Santa Anita Derby plays a major role in determining the favorites for next month's Kentucky Derby.Twenty-three horses have died at Santa Anita since Dec. 26, but two- time Triple Crown-winning trainer Bob Baffert told reporters last week that he remains confident about the level of safety at Santa Anita."If I thought there was a danger out there, I wouldn't even (send) my horses out there so I'm feeling good about what's going on here. They're not given a choice: They are forced to perform, and they are forced to race. There's nothing normal, there's nothing natural about horse racing, and we are actually calling for it to end."As for future races at Santa Anita, the California Horse Racing Board will hold a special meeting Friday to discuss "possible reallocation of race dates granted to the Los Angeles Turf Club at Santa Anita Park Race Track."Such a move, however, would require approval of The Stronach Group (Santa Anita's parent group) and Tim Ritvo, COO of The Stronach Group, told Daily Racing Forum that Santa Anita fully intends to maintain its schedule of racing through the end of the current meet, June 23.Santa Anita had been closed to racing for most of March in response to the deaths. Racing resumed March 29, one day after the California Horse Racing Board approved restrictions on certain medications administered to the animals. Two days later, the 23rd horse death occurred when 5-year-old Arms Runner stumbled during the Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes on a hillside turf course that requires horses to briefly cross over the main dirt track.On Tuesday, Ritvo said the track will suspend races on the hillside turf course to "look at data" in the aftermath of Arms Runner's death.Also Tuesday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, sent a letter to the CHRB urging it to suspend all racing at Santa Anita "until the cause or causes of these deaths can be fully investigated.""I also ask for more information about what the California Horse Racing Board is doing to both investigate this matter and address some of the concerns that these incidents have rightly raised," Feinstein wrote.The CHRB recently approved proposals to strictly limit the use of anti- inflammatory medications on horses. It also approved a much-discussed 50 percent reduction in the allowable amount of Lasix, a diuretic that helps prevent horses from hemorrhaging. Santa Anita officials had initially proposed a ban on Lasix, but struck a compromise with the Thoroughbred Owners of California and the California Thoroughbred Trainers calling for a 50 percent reduction in allowable dosage.Santa Anita officials previously announced a series of other measures being implemented to help bolster safety of the horses, including:Phasing out the use of whips by jockeys;Complete transparency of all veterinary records;Trainers must apply for permission to work a horse (a timed, high- speed training exercise) at least 48 hours in advance;No therapeutic medications of treatments will be allowed without a qualified veterinary diagnosis from a state licensed veterinarian;Significant and strict out-of-competition testing;Increasing the time required for horses to be on-site prior to a race; andA substantial investment by The Stronach Group in diagnostic equipment to aid in the early detection of pre-existing conditions.Between December and February of the previous year, 10 horses died at Santa Anita, compared with eight in 2016-17 and 14 in 2015-16. The track averaged about 50 deaths per year from 2008-18, according to data from the CHRB.The unusually large amount of rain that has fallen over the Southland last winter has been mentioned as a possible factor in explaining the surge in deaths.Former track superintendent Dennis Moore and Mick Peterson of Racing Services Testing Lab were brought in to conduct a thorough analysis of the main track, and officials repeatedly said they found no problems.Saturday's races also include the 0,000 Santa Anita Handicap. 4974

American Airlines said Wednesday evening that it was moving ahead with furloughs for 19,000 employees as CARES Act stimulus funds expire.In a letter to employees, American Airlines CEO Doug Parker said the furloughs would begin Thursday."Despite enormous bipartisan support for an extension of the (Payroll Support Program), our elected officials have not been able to reach agreement on a COVID-19 relief package that would enable this extension," Parker wrote. "As a result, tomorrow, we will begin the difficult process of furloughing 19,000 of our hardworking and dedicated colleagues."Parker added that he spoke with Treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin on Wednesday, who told him that the White House is continuing to negotiate with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on another COVID-19 stimulus package that would include further stimulus for the airline industry."Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that any of these efforts will come to fruition," Parker wrote. For older workers, those buyouts come with uncertainty for their financial future.“These are tough times, especially for older workers,” said Susan Weinstock with the AARP.Weinstock’s concern is older workers are being forced out of work without enough saved for retirement. According to AARP, half of full-time workers experience job loss after the age of 50. It typically takes them double the time to get back into the work force as it does a younger worker, and even if they find a job, they end up making less money.For those over the age of 50 who have suddenly lost their job because of COVID-19, there's also less time to make up retirement savings that were lost.“We know saving through work is the best way to save for retirement, and when you don’t have that option it makes it a lot harder,” Weinstock said.Weinstock's advice if you're over the age of 50 and out of work is to use this time to upscale or re-scale. She suggests finding an online class. Showing employers that you're a lifelong learner can make you more marketable.“We want to make sure older workers are able to recover from this, along with everybody else in the economy,” Weinstock added.For those working from home, Weinstock recommends taking the money you might have spent on commuting and putting it into your retirement account. 1557

Anyone driving on Interstate 15 near Spring Mountain Road near the Las Vegas Strip early this morning may have seen a shocking billboard. It said “Shoot A School Kid Only .”The infamous art collective INDECLINE “vandalized” the sign on Wednesday night. The billboard is used by Battlefield Vegas, which advertises that it is the best indoor shooting range experience in Las Vegas. The sign was also changed to say "DEFEND LIVES REFORM LAWS."INDECLINE says they did it because of “America’s longstanding obsession with gun culture and out government’s inability to honor the victims of mass shootings by distancing themselves from the homicidal policies of the NRA.”INDECLINE says it is "calling on all political parties to immediately work towards a legislative resolution that aims to protect citizens and reform inadequate gun las that are currently placing value on assault weapons over that of human life.”This isn’t the first time that INDECLINE has vandalized a billboard or did something controversial in Las Vegas and other cities around the U.S.INDECLINE was also behind the naked Donald Trump statues in 2016 that popped up in many cities, including Las Vegas, New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In addition, the group vandalized a billboard that was promoting a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor. They also hung mannequins in suits on billboards with the caption “Dying For Work.” The message on the billboard was covered up before 9 a.m. Thursday. Artificial turf has been a staple in many pro sports stadiums for about 50 years. And while there's no doubt that AstroTurf and its modern equivalent, FieldTurf, have changed the way pro football and baseball have been played, the surfaces have generally been considered safe for athletes to play on.But on Monday, the NFL Player's Association formally called on team owners to "proactively change all field surfaces to natural grass," citing higher rates of injuries to players who are playing on artificial fields.In an open letter, NFLPA President J.C. Tretter — a center for Cleveland Browns in the midst of his eighth NFL season — claimed that most of his teammates preferred to play on grass, noting that his joints felt "noticeably stiffer" after playing on artificial turf."The unforgiving nature of artificial turf compounds the grind on the body we already bear from playing a contact sport," Tretter wrote.In his letter, Tretter wrote that real grass offers more "give," reducing the stress on feet, ankles and knees. He also noted that NFL injury data shows players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf.Tretter also noted that despite harsh conditions, cold-weather cities like Cleveland, Green Bay and Pittsburgh still use traditional grass fields. In addition, indoor stadiums in Las Vegas and Phoenix also use grass surfaces."Agronomically, natural grass field surfaces are possible everywhere," Tretter said.As of 2020, 17 of 31 NFL stadiums use traditional grass.Tretter's letter comes weeks after the NFL was forced to inspect the artificial turf at MetLife Stadium — home of the Jets and Giants — after several high-profile players were injured in the surface in the opening weeks of the season. Among those hurt during weeks 2 and 3 of the season were 49ers players George Kittle Nick Bosa, Jimmy Garoppolo and Raheem Mostert.In 2015, Houston's NRG Stadium switched from natural grass to an artificial surface after more than a decade amid player criticism over injury concerns. Due to its retractable roof, groundskeepers grew grass in trays outdoors and then brought the trays indoors and assembled them together with forklifts to form the playing surface. Players claimed the system created seams in the playing surface which led to injuries, and the stadium even faced a lawsuit from a former player who claimed the grass led to a career-ending injury.Tretter's Browns teammate, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., was lost for the season this week after suffering an ACL tear while playing on an artificial surface at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati on Sunday. 2649
