SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A young man accused in a series of San Diego-area gang-related killings and attempted slayings pleaded not guilty Monday to murder, attempted murder and conspiracy charges.Ismael Betancourt, 20, is charged in the Aug. 1, 2019, shooting death of 57-year-old Marco Magana in Mountain View, the Feb. 8 shooting death of 19-year-old Leah Posey in Southcrest, and two attempted murders that allegedly occurred on July 24, 2019 and Feb. 8.San Diego police announced Betancourt's arrest last month in connection with the April 8, 2018, shooting death of 55-year-old Lowry Rivers in National City, which occurred when Betancourt was 17. Rivers' killing is not listed in the latest complaint, and it's unclear whether Betancourt is being tried in juvenile court regarding that crime or whether additional charges are pending in his current case.In addition to the murders and attempted murders, Betancourt is charged along with six co-defendants with conspiracy to commit a crime, for what prosecutors allege was a plan to kill rival gang members.The overarching conspiracy includes the July 12, 2019, shooting death of 20-year-old Joaquin Ruiz, who was shot in a vehicle in Bay Terraces by assailants who opened fire from another vehicle.The four defendants charged with that slaying have been arrested and pleaded not guilty. Two of those defendants, Ethan Apan, 28, and Kevin Herrera, 26, are also charged in the murders in which Betancourt is charged. The complaint charges Apan in Marco Magana's murder and Herrera in Leah Posey's murder.Betancourt is being held without bail and his next court date is a Dec. 22 readiness conference. 1656

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities today publicly identified a young man who was fatally shot last week during a fight near Horton Plaza.Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire found Angel Maravilla, 22, mortally wounded at E Street and Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp District shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego police.Medics took Maravilla to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.``The initial investigation revealed the victim and a companion were involved in an altercation with a third man,'' Lt. Matt Dobbs said. ``At some point during the altercation, the (third man) pulled a firearm and shot the victim.''The reason for the fight was unclear. Based on witness accounts and video footage from several businesses, homicide detectives identified the suspected shooter as 27-year-old Reuben David Velazquez, who was arrested Sunday and booked on suspicion of murder, Dobbs said. 917

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An El Cajon man was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison for distributing fentanyl, some of which caused the fatal overdose of a former player for the San Diego Old Aztecs Rugby Football Club.Christopher Glenn Emison, 33, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a distribution of fentanyl count for selling more than 40 grams of the drug, some of which led to the death of 45-year-old Derrick Hotchkiss in his San Diego home on April 11, 2019.A co-defendant, 34-year-old San Diego resident Jeffrey Alden Blair, pleaded guilty in February and is due to be sentenced next month.Prosecutors say Hotchkiss had text messages on his phone indicating Emison sold him fentanyl the night before his death.Shortly after Hotchkiss' death, investigators searched Emison's home and vehicle and seized fentanyl, heroin residue, firearms, ammunition and other items indicating drug sales.Prosecutors say Emison admitted to knowing the fentanyl was dangerous and apparently sent text messages to Hotchkiss to warn him of the drug's strength but never received a response."Selling drugs is not a victimless crime. Selling drugs is a root cause of crime, cartel violence, the destruction of families and in this case, death," said DEA Special Agent in Charge John W. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public today for information about an Egyptian man who was found dead under potentially suspicious circumstances off the coast of Mission Beach.The body of 37-year-old Haitham "Max" Elshayeb was floating about two and a half miles from shore when a fisherman on a boat spotted it shortly before 10:30 a.m. Oct. 10, San Diego police said.The body, dressed only in surfer-style shorts, didn't show any obvious signs of traumatic injuries, Lt. Anthony Dupree said. A possibly suspicious circumstance, however, was a chain wrapped around the dead man's waist, though it might have been used simply as a belt or style accessory, the lieutenant said.Homicide detectives were called in to investigate the fatality "out of an abundance of caution," and the death has been classified as suspicious, Dupree said. A ruling on the cause of Elshayeb's death remained on hold this week pending completion of postmortem exams.Police hope to contact people who had contact with Elshayeb in the days and weeks leading to his death, Dupree said.Anyone with information about the case is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
