The Temple University Board of Trustees decided Friday to rescind the honorary degree it gave to Bill Cosby, one of its most famous alums and a former trustee. In a three-sentence statement, the university said the decision was due to his conviction Thursday on three counts of aggravated indecent assault."In 1991, based on his career achievements, Temple awarded an honorary degree to William Cosby," the statement said. "Yesterday, Dr. Cosby was found guilty by a jury of the felony of aggravated sexual assault. Today the Temple University Board of Trustees has accepted the recommendation of the University to rescind the honorary degree."Cosby graduated from Temple and had been on the Board of Trustees for 32 years until he resigned in 2014 amid accusations that he sexually assaulted dozens of women over decades."I have always been proud of my association with Temple University," Cosby said in a statement released by the university at the time. "I have always wanted to do what would be in the best interests of the university and its students. As a result, I have tendered my resignation from the Temple University Board of Trustees."Through his powerful role at Temple, he met Andrea Constand, who worked for the university's women's basketball team. The Seattle City Council unanimously approved a law on Tuesday that will raise the minimum pay for Uber and Lyft drivers. In a statement on the Seattle mayor's website, Mayor Jenny Durkan celebrated the city council passing her Fare Share Plan that would make ride-hailing companies pay their drivers the minimum hourly wage, which will go into effect Jan. 1, 2021."The pandemic has exposed the fault lines in our systems of worker protections, leaving many front line workers like gig workers without a safety net," Mayor Durkan said. "It is more important than ever that we add to the economic resilience of our community of drivers. The Fare Share plan guarantees that drivers will receive fair pay and can provide for themselves and their families."The ordinance guarantees drivers will earn at least The US Forest Service hopes families will want to end 2020 with a live tree, preferably one cut from a national forest.Cutting down a Christmas tree is a tradition for many, and a healthy tradition for the forests as smaller trees get thinned out.“By cutting your own tree, you take an active part in managing your national forests,” according to the US Forest Service webpage.Tree hunters should look for an area of tightly-knit, dense trees and pick one from there. This will in turn give the surrounding trees more space to grow, Hillary Santanez, recreation event coordinator with the White River National Forest, explained to KMGH.Thinning the forests in this fashion reduces competition for resources and nutrients so the other trees can grow stronger and healthier, Santanez said. It also helps the trees handle stressful environmental situations, such as drought. In addition, thinning dense forests can help with wildfire mitigation.Families who have a fourth or fifth grader can get a free permit from the Every Kid Outdoors initiative through the US Forest Service. Otherwise, permits to cut down a tree in a national forest run to depending on the park. Permits are required. All permit sales are online for 2020, along with maps, how to select a tree, guidance for cutting it down and safety reminders. Like, dressing for the cold, possibly dark and snowy forest conditions. The different parks have different rules about where a Christmas tree can be cut down from, usually it has to be about 200 feet from roads and campgrounds."You want to make sure that you're not trespassing on private property, so going onto our website and downloading a map is essential so that you can make sure that you're staying on forest land because a lot of the forest land, especially in the Front Range area, is really adjacent to private property, and you have to make sure that you're following the law while you're up there," Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands Public Affairs Officer Crystal Young told KOAA News. There are height and trunk size requirements as well to make sure tree hunters are taking the smaller trees to help thin out forests. The U.S. has surpassed another bleak marker in the COVID-19 pandemic, as the country has reached 10 million confirmed cases of the virus, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins. The milestone comes just hours after global cases surpassed 50 million, meaning about one out of every five people around the world diagnosed with the virus since the pandemic began has been diagnosed in the U.S.At least 237,000 Americans have died of the virus since the pandemic began. The U.S. continues to lead the world in both total cases and in deaths linked to the virus. The U.S. surpassed its 10 millionth case as the country deals with a disturbing spike in infections ahead of the winter months. The country surpassed 120,000 new cases in a single day three times last week, obliterating previous records. Prior to last week, the most confirmed cases the U.S. had seen in a single day was 102,000.The U.S. has recorded a million new cases of COVID-19 in the last 10 days alone. The country surpassed the 9 million case plateau on Oct. 30.In addition to the spike in cases, hospital resource use is also on the rise, and deaths linked to the virus are up slightly in recent days, though the death rate is not near what it was in March and April. Johns HopkinsHealth experts have warned that the U.S. is currently in a perilous position in the pandemic, with transmission rates as high as they have ever been as Americans move social gatherings indoors for winter months. In a memo last week, Dr. Deborah Birx — a member of the White House coronavirus task force — warned that the country is entering "the most deadly and concerning" phase of the pandemic.Late last month, Dr. Anthony Fauci — a member of the White House coronavirus task force and the county's top expert on infectious diseases — warned that the U.S. was in for a "whole lot of pain" if things didn't change soon. The U.S. did get some good news in the pandemic on Monday, as Pfizer announced that its vaccine candidate has been 90% effective in promoting immunity against the virus. However, even if the vaccine were to get FDA approval in the next few days, it would still take several months for most of the country to be vaccinated — and officials fear that vaccine skepticism could keep immunity levels below the threshold to stifle the virus. 2314
