INDIANAPOLIS — A man who had to be rescued from a retention pond on Indianapolis' northeast side Monday after he jumped in to rescue his dog has died. The incident happened in The Masters apartment complex at about 11:30 a.m., near Masters Road and E. 91st Street.The Indianapolis Fire Department says the man went after one of his dogs when the pup went into the icy water.The victim, a man in his 20s, was not able to get out of the water.Two residents of the complex saw the man trying to rescue his dog and tried to help. Both fell into the water but were able to get out and were treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries. The victim was pulled from the water by a rescue team and rushed to St. Vincent Hospital where he later died. His identity has not been released. The victim's dog is expected to be OK.  859

In the shadow of the Capitol dome Tuesday was a sobering display of thousands of pairs of shoes, organized neatly across the grass said to represent children who have died in the US from gunshot wounds since the Newtown elementary school massacre in 2012.The global advocacy group Avaaz has been collecting donated pairs of shoes for two weeks and early Tuesday morning lined them up one by one, 18 inches apart, in roughly 80 rows on the Capitol lawn, as Congress continues to sort through a debate over gun violence and school safety."Shoes are individual. They're so personal. There are ballet slippers here and roller skates. These are kids," said Nell Greenberg, the campaign director for Avaaz.The display feature 7,000 pairs of shoes. To arrive at that figure, the group cited a 2017 report from the American Academy of Pediatrics using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that found nearly 1,300 children die from gunshot wounds in the US every year. Avaaz then tallied up the estimated number since the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.Organizers say shoes were donated from across the country and stored in a Washington, DC, warehouse until Tuesday. Among those who donated were family members who've lost loved ones to gun violence, such as Tom Mauser, who lost his son in the Columbine school shooting and traveled from Colorado to hand deliver his son's shoes for the display."My son wore the same size shoes as me. I discovered that after he died and that became a big symbol for me, that I could walk in his shoes," said Mauser, who has since become an advocate for stricter gun control.Mauser came to Washington with two pairs of his son's size 10.5 shoes. (CNS) - Thousands of Irvine residents evacuated due to the Silverado Fire were returning home Wednesday morning as firefighters worked to contain the blaze, which injured two firefighters and has blackened 13,354 acres, and containment has increased from 5 to 25%, authorities said."Today, fire crews will reinforce existing controlled lines," a Cal Fire spokesman said. It's likely that a Sacramento sheriff's deputy who struck a protester with a patrol SUV Saturday night didn't realize he had hit someone, Sheriff Scott Jones said during a press conference Monday.The patrol SUV struck a woman as she and others gathered in the street to denounce the killing of Stephon Clark, then left the scene, according to video of the incident. The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department."I haven't spoken to the officer about the incident, I'm not even sure that his statement has been taken," Jones said, adding that there has been no change to the deputy's duties at this point during this investigation.
