SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police were searching for a suspect following a violent shooting in the Midway District on Wednesday night.San Diego Police said officers received a call of shots fire followed by a vehicle crashing into a building at Kenyon St. and Kemper St. just after 6 p.m. The car was located behind a shopping center in the 3600 block of Midway Dr., SDPD said.Officers arrived to find a man behind the steering wheel of a grey Acura that collided with a retaining wall. The man had been shot at least once. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim has not been identified but was described as a possible Hispanic male between 18 and 25 years old.Police are searching for a suspect, but say the investigation is still in its early stages. Witnesses heard a car speed off, but police did not immediately have a suspect description. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Newly-released census numbers show residents are fleeing California in sizable numbers.Angie Romero of was outside a U-Haul trailer, packed with rented wine barrels she will be using as decor for her 50th birthday party.  She'll likely be renting another U-Haul in the not-so-distant future."The cost of living puts you in another mindset.  I'm getting older and start wondering about my future," said Romero.Romero, who works in sales, plans on packing up and leaving the state within the next two years.  One reason: the rent for her apartment near San Diego."I've lived there three years, and every year it's gone up either or ," said Romero.Romero is hardly alone. According to the latest census numbers, in the year-span ending July 2017, adding up all the people moving into and out of California translates into a net loss of 138,000 people. In San Diego County, there is also an apparent exodus with a net loss of nearly 16,000 people in the year ending in July 2017. In the previous year, there was a loss of 8,300 people.         1148

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Puerto Ricans are living in fear after hundreds of earthquakes rocked the region, according to a San Diegan with family there.Tommy Rosas last lived on the island when he was 14. Though he moved to the mainland, Puerto Rico never left him."It hurts," he said sadly, "every minute of the day, I walk, breathe, sweat, cry Puerto Rico."He's been hurting more for his home since 2017, when Hurricane Maria hit. "My family moved, with the exception of a couple cousins who live in Cabo Rojo." He said it was too much to start over an most of his family moved to the states."The electrical grid is ancient, and it has to be repaired. They started the repairs little by little, then the earthquakes hit," saying in frustration, "whats next? What did Puerto Ricans do to deserve this?"The shaking started December 28th, the biggest quake struck January 7th, registering a magnitude 6.4."There's thousands of people living on the streets, because of their homes being destroyed or they're afraid of their home collapsing on top of them." Rosas said friends described the desperate living conditions through social media.Rosas gave a friend a flash light as a gift before he went to Puerto Rico a few months back. He said it was a joke, but now that friend now using it regularly, "he's in Isla Verde, so they lost power there, and it's periodically, it comes and goes. The food supply, water," he said was dwindling.He said a group caravaned from the north side of the island bringing supplies like diapers, formula and juice to those affected by the earthquakes.The positivity keeps Rosas going, "we don't give up, we won't lay down and say okay."He raised ,000 for supplies for the island and is planning another fundraiser. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Padres outfielder Tommy Pham is recovering after being stabbed in the back Sunday night, the team says.According to San Diego Police, Pham was stabbed during an altercation Sunday night.The Padres said Monday that Pham is in “good condition.” He is expected to make a full recovery.“We are aware of the incident last night involving Tommy Pham. He was treated at UC San Diego Health and is currently in good condition. He is expected to make a full recovery. The San Diego Police Department is actively investigating the incident and we will have no further comment at this time,” the Padres said.Pham Monday also thanked the medical staff in charge of his care.“I’d like to thank the incredible medical staff at UC San Diego Health for taking such great care of me last night. I truly appreciate the hard work of the SDPD as well as they continue their search for the suspects. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Monday identified the victim in a deadly Mount Hope-area shooting in late December. According to police, 54-year-old Darryl Toliver was shot and killed in an alleyway on the 800 block of Raven Street around 2:45 a.m. December 29. Witnesses told police and unknown man and two vehicles were spotted leaving the area around the time of the shooting. RELATED: 1 dead in Mount Hope-area shootingThe man was described as black and in his 20s, wearing a dark cap, long-sleeved white sweatshirt and dark sweat pants. Police said at the time that the man was only a person of interest. One of the vehicles spotted leaving the scene was described as a white, 1990s Honda Accord while the other was described as a 2006-2010 Chrysler 300.
