SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The victim of a hit-and-run crash in South Park is calling for the City of San Diego to make streets safer. “It's been really difficult not being able to walk for seven weeks and having to be able to walk again, dealing with the side effects of the concussion and getting my brain working right,” said Vicki Granowitz. Surveillance video recorded one year ago shows Granowitz at the crosswalk of Grape and Fern streets. Before she can safely cross, a car hits her. Witnesses rushed to help as the car took off. Police later tracked down the driver, who pleaded guilty to the crash. RELATED: Study finds most dangerous intersections for pedestrians in San Diego Two stop signs have been erected at the intersection but Granowitz wants more improvements. Tuesday morning, Granowitz teamed up with Circulate San Diego for a news conference. The group wants the city to expand safety efforts under Vision Zero, Mayor Faulconer’s initiative to make the streets and sidewalks safer, and reduce traffic-related deaths and severe injuries to zero by 2025. 10News received a statement from the mayor’s office saying they are making investments for traffic projects. RELATED: Report looks at most dangerous North County intersections for pedestrians “In fiscal year 2020 alone, million was allocated to Vision Zero, including more than .8 million for bicycle facilities, .4 million for the installation of new sidewalks, .8 million for new traffic signals and .6 million for median installations,” according to Senior Public Information Officer Nicole Darling. 1590

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Registrar of Voters is revising down its expected turnout numbers for the March primary from earlier projections. With an estimated 290,000 ballots still outstanding as of Thursday evening, turnout is now expected to fall between 47 and 52 percent of the county's registered voters. This means turnout will look similar to 2016's primary, which had about 50 percent participation. Original projections in January from the Registrar of Voters showed expectations of turnout between 55 and 60 percent. That number was revised in February to between 50 and 55 percent."It looks like turnout in this primary is about what it was in 2016 in San Diego," said professor Thad Kousser, department chair of the UC San Diego political science department. "We didn't see the spike we were expecting."However, Kousser points out that using turnout percentage can be misleading. Because of California's new Motor Voter law, there are more than 300,000 more registered voters in San Diego County than there were in 2016. Therefore, a matching 50 percent turnout would actually mean tens of thousands of new voters cast ballots in the 2020 primary. 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This election fired up voters and one Serra Mesa couple was driven by duty to vote for the first time.Anthony Joiner and Justine Gibson are engaged, and invested in this election."We recently became home owners and in the next few years we'll be parents hopefully so we feel like the future is in our hands and we want to be part of the decisions that are happening," Joiner said, with Gibson adding, "wanted to make it count."FIND YOUR POLLING PLACEJoiner said it felt great to cast his ballot for the first time, "I feel accomplished."Joiner and Gibson filled their ballots out in person. "We wanted the full experience," they said laughing."This year more than ever we felt the importance of voting and having our voices heard, this was primarily driven by the current political environment! I feel like the presidential race without a doubt is important, however equally as important are the local races/props that will have a direct impact on our quality of life," Gibson said. They didn't make their decisions in isolation, "we filled out our ballots together [at home]," Joiner said. "We’re pretty much on the same page on all things political and whatnot so it was a little bit easier," Gibson chimed in."We didn’t want our votes to cancel one another out so if we disagreed on something we would talk about it a little bit and see why," Joiner said laughing.Joiner said he hopes the tension fades after the election, "and I really want everyone to just get along really."Both hope for a positive outcome, "no matter what way it goes people just accept it," Joiner said. "And respect each other," Gibson added. The couple encouraged others to make sure they cast their votes on Tuesday. The polls close at 8 p.m. Tuesday. 1753

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This week, a massive Mola mola fish stunned whale watchers in San Diego. The fish is a unique sight, appearing to look like a giant fish head with fins. It's also known as the sunfish. Domenic Biagini, owner and captain of Gone Whale Watching San Diego, says they specialize in giving people once in a lifetime encounters. "Whenever I give my opening spiel, I tell them I'll show them anything that moves," said Biagini.RELATED: Thar she blows! Where to whale watch in San Diego — by land or seaOn this trip, the massive Mola mola stole the show.Biagini says while mola is common here, they're usually 2 to 3 feet long in our waters. He believes the one they spotted was 7 to 8 feet. "When we came across this specific one, we were kind of blown away by the sheer magnitude of it," said Biagini.Biagini happened to have divers on his boat that day, who told him mola is one of the prized fish to swim with. RELATED: Video: Rare blue whale with calf spotted off San Diego coast"Because I had a boat full of freedivers and scuba divers, it was like we hit the lottery, it was my equivalent of finding killer whales, apparently!"A lot is unknown about the fish, but the females can release 300 million eggs. And while usually spotted drifting in the water and basking in the sun, researchers recently discovered they're actually strong swimmers.Mola mola can grow as large as 14 feet by 10 feet. 1418
