Microsoft said in a blog post on Thursday that it has discovered efforts by Iran, China and Russia to launch cyberattacks on the presidential campaigns of Joe Biden and Donald Trump.Tom Burt, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for customer security and trust, wrote that Microsoft was able to stop the cyberattacks from happening, and have notified the campaigns of the three countries’ efforts.“We disclose attacks like these because we believe it’s important the world knows about threats to democratic processes,” Burt wrote. “It is critical that everyone involved in democratic processes around the world, both directly or indirectly, be aware of these threats and take steps to protect themselves in both their personal and professional capacities. We report on nation-state activity to our customers and more broadly when material to the public, regardless of the actor’s nation-state affiliation. We are taking extra steps to protect customers involved in elections, government and policymaking.”Last month, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a statement outlining efforts by Iran, China and Russia to attempt to undermine this year’s presidential election.“Ahead of the 2020 U.S. elections, foreign states will continue to use covert and overt influence measures in their attempts to sway U.S. voters’ preferences and perspectives, shift U.S. policies, increase discord in the United States, and undermine the American people’s confidence in our democratic process,” William Evanina, director of the United States National Counterintelligence and Security Center, said. "They may also seek to compromise our election infrastructure for a range of possible purposes, such as interfering with the voting process, stealing sensitive data, or calling into question the validity of the election results. However, it would be difficult for our adversaries to interfere with or manipulate voting results at scale.”As part of Evanina’s assessment, he said that China and Iran were attempting to seek a favorable outcome for Biden, while Russia was working to ensure a favorable outcome for Trump.“As Americans, we are all in this together; our elections should be our own,” Evanina previously said. “Foreign efforts to influence or interfere with our elections are a direct threat to the fabric of our democracy. Neutralizing these threats requires not just a whole-of-government approach, but a whole-of-nation effort.”The Trump campaign responded to Microsoft’s cybersecurity report."As President Trump’s re-election campaign, we are a large target, so it is not surprising to see malicious activity directed at the campaign or our staff,” Thea McDonald, deputy national press secretary for the Trump campaign, said. “We work closely with our partners, Microsoft and others, to mitigate these threats. We take cybersecurity very seriously and do not publicly comment on our efforts.”The Biden campaign also responded to the report."We are aware of reports from Microsoft that a foreign actor has made unsuccessful attempts to access the non-campaign email accounts of individuals affiliated with the campaign," the campaign said. "We have known from the beginning of our campaign that we would be subject to such attacks and we are prepared for them. Biden for President takes cybersecurity seriously, we will remain vigilant against these threats, and will ensure that the campaign's assets are secured." 3443
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — The things Lt. Col. Joe Jackson stored in his mother's basement before his most recent deployment couldn't be worth more than a few hundred dollars to a pawn shop, he said Tuesday night. They were family keepsakes, mostly: His father's Xavier class ring, relatives' dress watches and mementos from his other tours of duty. Nothing he felt he needed to worry about when he left for Afghanistan on Valentine's Day.They were gone when he returned for Thanksgiving, leaving him awash in "shock, anger and disappointment.""You realize the magnitude — the value beyond the monetary value of the things that were taken from you and how irreplaceable they are," he said. "Whether you can find them in a jewelry store or have them recreated, it's never going to be the same."His mother couldn't have moved them, he said. Multiple strokes have kept Rosalind Jackson in need of daily care since the turn of the century, and her family pays for a rotating team of caregivers to ensure her safety and comfort. She and her son believe one of those caregivers could be behind the theft. The culprit must have had both access to the home and in-depth knowledge of its contents, according to Joe Jackson. He didn't store his valuables in conspicuous containers."It makes me sick," his mother said. "Really."Jackson had returned to Fort Benning by Tuesday night. He said he had been working closely with Middletown, Ohio police to find leads and track down his missing possessions but encouraged members of the public to reach out with information as well. His hope? When he comes home again for Christmas, his treasured keepsakes will be there, too. 1682
Markus Paul, who was the Dallas Cowboys' strength and conditioning coordinator, has died, the team announced Wednesday. He was 54.The team did not announce Paul's cause of death."The loss of a family member is a tragedy, and Markus Paul was a loved and valued member of our family," Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones said in a press release. "He was a pleasant and calming influence in our strength room and throughout The Star. His passion for his work and his enthusiasm for life earns him great respect and admiration from all of our players and the entire organization. We offer our love and support to his family in this very difficult time. Our hearts are broken for his family and all of the individuals whose lives he touched and made better."On Tuesday, the team had canceled practice after Paul experienced a medical emergency at its facility and was rushed to the hospital, the Associated Press reported."We extend our love, strength, and support to Markus' family during this most challenging of times and ask that their privacy be respected moving forward," head coach Mike McCarthy said in a statement. "Markus Paul was a leader in this building. He earned the players' respect and attention because he cared so much and was a naturally gifted communicator – both on the personal and professional levels. He handled every situation, sometimes with a smile and a pat on the back, and sometimes with tough love. He had innate toughness in a job that requires that quality, and he was admired throughout the NFL by his peers and the players he coached. It was a privilege to work with him as a coach and laugh with him as a friend. Markus did everything the right way."McCarthy named Paul the team's strength coach in January.Drafted out of Syracuse, the former safety played from 1989 to 1993 for the Chicago Bears and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to the AP.According to ESPN, Paul won five Super Bowl championships as a coach, three with the New England Patriots and two with the New York Giants.Dallas is still scheduled to play Washington on Thanksgiving. 2077
