LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Monday is Kobe Bryant Day in Los Angeles and Orange County, honoring the late Los Angeles Lakers star, and it'll be highlighted by a move to rename a downtown stretch of Figueroa Street outside Staples Center in recognition of his legacy."This is a gift to the city of Los Angeles and to all the Kobe Bryant fans around the world," City Councilman Curren Price said in a statement announcing a proposal to rename the street. "L.A. streets will rise in honor of the 'King of L.A.'"Price and Councilman Herb Wesson plan to introduce a motion Tuesday calling for the stretch of Figueroa between Olympic and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards to be named "Kobe Bryant Boulevard." That stretch covers the portion of the street from roughly Staples Center to Exposition Park.A 2016 Los Angeles City Council resolution declared Aug. 24 as Kobe Bryant Day in perpetuity, on the date of the jersey numbers he wore with the team. Bryant wore the No. 8 his first 10 seasons and 24 for the final 10.City Councilman Jose Huizar, who introduced the resolution, said Bryant should be admired not just because he is "unbelievably talented," but because he "has taught all of us in Los Angeles that this city has a fighting spirit.""It doesn't matter how down you are," Huizar said. "It doesn't matter what hardships you face. You keep showing up, you keeping practicing, you keep going and yes you keep winning and here in L.A."The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted Aug. 11 to declare Aug. 24 as Kobe Bryant Day. Bryant was a resident of Newport Beach.Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Michelle Steel, who introduced the motion, called Bryant a "treasured member of our community," who "inspired so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up."On Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers honored the memories of Kobe and Gianna Bryant on what would have been his 42nd birthday.During ceremonies before the 11-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies, Dodger players donned Kobe Bryant's Nos. 8 and 24 jerseys and the team played a tribute video narrated by retired broadcaster Vin Scully."Kobe demonstrated that he was a man of many talents," Scully said. "He was a champion, a mentor, a creative force, an advocate."Kobe was also a husband and a father to four wonderful girls. The warrior that we knew as `The Black Mamba' was a sweetheart to his wife Vanessa and a proud `Girl Dad' to Natalia, Bianka, Capri and his daughter known as 'the Mambacita,' Gianna."Gigi was worthy of her dad's nickname. She shared his passion for basketball and so much more. He in turn wanted her to have every opportunity to succeed, and he believed that the women's game deserved as much respect and support as the men received."Kobe Bryant's No. 24 and Gianna's youth basketball No. 2 were painted on the pitcher's mound.Bryant played his entire 20-season career with the Lakers, helping them win five NBA championships, and was chosen as the NBA Finals MVP for both of the two most recent championships. The 6-foot-6-inch Bryant, a guard for most of his career but listed as a forward-guard in his final season, scored 33,643 points, the fourth-most in league history, behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl Malone (36,928) and LeBron James (34,241).James passed Bryant on the all-time list Jan. 25, one day before Kobe and Gianna Bryant and seven others were killed in a Jan. 26 helicopter crash in Calabasas. 3416

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles County health officials have reported more 4,544 new COVID-19 cases and 24 more deaths Friday, as new safety orders -- including a stay-at-home order -- will go into effect as a result. The new measures will go into effect on Monday and remain until December 20, according to Los Angeles County Public Health. Residents are advised to stay home as much as possible and always wear a face covering over their nose and mouth when outside their household and around others. The additional safety modifications in the order include the following changes to the existing Health Officer Order:-- Gatherings: all public and private gatherings with individuals not in your household are prohibited, except for church services and protests, which are constitutionally protected rights.-- Occupancy limits at various businesses; all individuals at these sites are required to wear face coverings and keep at least 6 feet of distance:-- Essential retail: 35% maximum occupancy;-- Nonessential retail (includes indoor malls): 20% maximum occupancy;-- Personal care services: 20% maximum occupancy;-- Libraries: 20% maximum occupancy;-- Fitness centers operating outdoors: 50% maximum occupancy;-- Museums galleries, zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens operating outdoors: 50% maximum occupancy;-- Mini-golf, batting cages, go-kart racing operating outdoors: 50% maximum occupancy;-- Outdoor recreation activities all which require face coverings (except for swimming) and distancing: Beaches, trails and parks remain open; gatherings at these sites with members outside your household are prohibited. Golf courses, tennis courts, pickleball, archery ranges, skate parks, bike parks and community gardens remain open for individuals or members of a single household. Pools that serve more than one household may open only for regulated lap swimming with one person per lane. Drive-in movies/events/car parades are permitted provided occupants in each car are members of one household.-- Schools: All schools and day camps remain open adhering to reopening protocols. K-12 Schools and Day Camps with an outbreak (3 cases or more over 14 days) should close for 14 days.-- Closed nonessential businesses/activities:-- Playgrounds (with the exception of playgrounds at childcare and schools;-- Cardrooms;-- Restaurants, bars, breweries and wineries remain closed for in- person dining and drinking because of the high rates of transmission in the community, as customers are not wearing face coverings, which results in an increased chance of transmission of the virus. Restaurants, wineries and breweries remain open for pick-up, delivery and take-out. Breweries and wineries remain open for retail sales at 20% occupancy. There are 1,893 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized and 24% of these people are in the ICU. On October 27, one month ago, there were 747 people hospitalized with COVID-19.Public Health reminded everyone to stay home as much as possible and avoid seeing people you don't live with, even if you don't feel sick. Residents are also reminded to wear a face covering over their nose and mouth whenever they are outside their home and around others, as COVID-19 can be unintentionally spread to others. The five-day average of new cases is 4,751.To date, Public Health identified 387,793 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County and a total of 7,604 deaths."To those who recently lost loved ones from COVID-19, we send you wishes for healing and peace," said Barbara Ferrer, director of Public Health. "With the recent surge of COVID-19 across our community, we must take additional safety measures to reduce the risk of illness and death from this terrible virus and protect our healthcare system."These targeted measures are in effect for the next three weeks and still allow for many essential and nonessential activities where residents are always masked and distanced. We know we are asking a lot from so many who have been sacrificing for months on end and we hope that L.A. County residents continue following Public Health safety measures that we know can slow the spread."Acting with collective urgency right now is essential if we want to put a stop to this surge. Please remain home as much as possible and do not gather with others not in your household for the next three weeks."On Wednesday, county Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis explained that the situation was getting worse each day."We continue to be at a very difficult time in this pandemic, as is so much of the United States," Davis said.According to current county estimates, every COVID-19 patient in the county is passing the virus to an average of 1.27 people -- the highest transmission rate the county has seen since March, before any safety protocols such as face coverings and social distancing were in place.Based on that transmission rate, health officials estimate one of every 145 people in the county are now infected with the virus and transmitting it to others."This doesn't include people that are currently hospitalized or isolated at home," county Health Services Director Dr. Christina Ghaly said. "This is the estimate of people that are out and about and infecting others. They may not know they're infected. They may know they're infected and not be isolating. But they're out there and they're exposing other people to the virus."Ghaly said the number of people hospitalized due to the virus has jumped by 70% in the past two weeks, with the county now averaging about 300 new admissions daily."Based on the current estimate for (the virus transmission rate) and assuming that there's no change in people's behavior that would affect transmissions, there will likely be shortages in the number of hospital beds, and especially in ICU beds or intensive-care unit beds, over the next two to four weeks," she said.Ghaly noted that given the current transmission rate, the number of hospitalized patients could double in two weeks, and quadruple in a month. She said hospitals have "surge" plans to increase the number of beds, but the availability of health care workers to staff those beds and treat patients is more limited. 6180

Live music might feel like a thing of the past, but venues and event organizers are working on ideas to bring it back sooner rather than later in the age of COVID-19.Ticketmaster says it has been working with event organizers and venues to navigate how they plan to admit fans to live sporting events and concerts once a vaccine is released. On Wednesday, Pfizer updated its vaccine efficacy, saying it is 95 percent effective and is seeking clearance soon. Earlier in the week, Moderna announced its vaccine also was 95 percent effective.Ticketmaster says it has discussed the idea of using a person’s vaccine status as a possible barometer of protection for admittance into events. In an email, the company said, “In short, we are not forcing anyone to do anything. Just exploring the ability to enhance our existing digital ticket capabilities to offer solutions for event organizers that could include testing and vaccine information with 3rd party health providers. Just a tool in the box for those that may want to use.”Here is how Ticketmaster says it might work: People who wanted to attend an event would upload their vaccine status through an app that connects to a third-party health care provider. That company would store the information and keep all other details private, abiding by HIPAA laws, according to Ticketmaster. That provider would then mark that person’s status so they could present their digital ticket along with their vaccine status at the event.Ticketmaster says this would not be mandatory, noting “Ticketmaster does not have the power to set policies around safety/entry requirements, which would include vaccines and/or testing protocols. That is up to the discretion of the event organizer. Ticketmaster continues to work with event organizers on all COVID safety measures and it will be up to each event organizer to set future requirements, based on their preferences and local health guidelines.” 1941

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" star Alfonso Ribeiro has dropped a lawsuit against the makers of the video game "Fortnite" over its use of the "Carlton" dance he did on the show.Ribeiro's lawyers filed documents Thursday in federal court in Los Angeles saying he's voluntarily dismissing the suit against North Carolina-based Epic Games. No reason was given, and Ribeiro's lawyer did not immediately reply to a request for comment. The actor had already dropped a similar suit against Take-Two Interactive, makers of the video game NBA2K16.The suits received a serious blow last month when federal officials denied Ribeiro a copyright of the "Carlton."Ribeiro's nerdy, arm-swinging dance, usually to Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual," was popularized through his character, Carlton Banks, on the 1990s sitcom. 828
