SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspected drunken driver crashed into a house in the Miramar Ranch North area of San Diego Saturday morning and was hospitalized with life threatening injuries.The man was driving his 2014 Hyundai eastbound in the 11700 block of Cypress Canyon Road when he made a left turn onto the 11500 block of Sun Ray Court about 12:30 a.m., according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department."As (the driver) was turning, he made an unsafe movement to his left, lost control and crashed into a house," Heims said.The driver was taken to a hospital with major head and face injuries, considered to be life threatening, Heims said.DUI was suspected and the crash was being investigated by SDPD Traffic Division.The name of the driver was not disclosed.No other injuries were reported. 817

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist was killed in a fiery solo vehicle crash off Interstate 5 in the Barrio Logan area, authorities said Monday.The crash was reported shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday on southbound I- 5 near Cesar E. Chavez Parkway, California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Strickland said.Investigators determined a pickup truck hit the center divide, then went down an embankment before ending up on a nearby street and catching fire, Strickland said.The truck's driver was pronounced dead at the scene, but no details about the victim were immediately available.The crash shut down the right two lanes near Cesar Chavez Parkway until about 11:45 p.m. Sunday. 675

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - It was a big day for Democrats running for San Diego City Council.Tuesday's election brought about major change on the council, with five new faces joining the nine-member panel.While council races are technically nonpartisan, in recent years, council decisions have broken largely along party lines, with conservatives regularly outnumbered.-- In District 1, which has been represented by Democrat-turned-mayoral candidate Barbara Bry since 2016, Democrat Joe LaCava, a civil engineer and business owner, defeated small business attorney Will Moore, 61.8% to 38.2%.District 1 includes La Jolla, Del Mar Heights, Carmel Valley and University City.-- In District 3, Councilman Chris Ward vacated the seat to run for state Assembly. A Democrat, Ward has served since 2016. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Flames tore through a large commercial building in the Morena area Friday, causing extensive damage and sending a thick plume of smoke into the air near Mission Bay.The blaze in the 1200 block of Morena Boulevard erupted about 5:40 p.m., the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.Police closed down the north-south street to through traffic while firefighters worked to subdue the intense flames.Crews were still working to get the blaze under control as of 6:30 p.m. and trying to get inside the two-story structure to check on a report there might be someone inside, according to SDFRD public affairs.There were no immediate reports of injuries. 677

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday confirmed the first influenza- related death of the 2019/2020 flu season in San Diego County.The county's Health and Human Services Agency reported that a 74-year- old Chula Vista man died Aug. 15 due to complications from Influenza B. The man, whose name was withheld, also had additional medical issues, according to county health officials.The county tracks flu activity year-round during each flu season, which corresponds with the county's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. Health officials didn't confirm the first flu death in each of the last two flu seasons until October.RELATED: San Diego County records second case of measles this year"Influenza deaths can occur at any time since influenza circulates throughout the year," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the county's interim deputy public health officer. "The elderly, pregnant women and those with underlying medical conditions are at higher risk of developing complications from influenza."Since July 1, health officials have confirmed 106 flu cases throughout the county. At this time in the last two flu seasons, officials had confirmed just 26 cases in 2018 and 114 in 2017. The 2017/2018 flu season resulted in 342 flu-related deaths, the most since the county began tracking flu data nearly 20 years ago.The season's flu vaccine will not be widely available around the county until September, according to local officials. Certain local pharmacies and health clinics may have the vaccine before then, however.
