ALEXANDRIA, Ind. -- More than a dozen small dogs were rescued from one of the worst cases of animal hoarding officials in Madison County, Indiana say they have ever seen. Madison County Sheriff's deputies responded to a complaint about dogs barking at a home on Trenton Street in Alexandria on Saturday just after 2 p.m. Responding deputies said the smell from the home was so strong that it reached the driveway and the homeowner had to walk around feces to exit the home. Inside the home, deputies found 18 Shih-Tzu and Rat Terrier mixed dogs with severely matted and unkempt fur and fecal matter on the floors throughout the home. The dogs appeared to be well fed, according to deputies but were in need of intensive care. “When we’re called to help with a situation like this, and you can smell the urine from the driveway…you know it’s going to be really bad,” said Maleah Stringer, Director of the Animal Protection League, Inc. (APL), the city of Anderson’s animal shelter. “There has to be some point along the way that people have to realize they can’t handle caring for this many dogs, and they need help. Sadly, too many don’t make that call and the dogs end up paying the price.”Several of the dogs in the home were being kept inside a small bedroom that was covered in mold and feces. The smell of ammonia inside the home was so intense that two deputies had to be treated for exposure. The owner voluntarily surrendered all 18 dogs to the Animal Protection League of Madison County. According to the APL, one of the dogs was in such poor shape that it had to be euthanized.  “We are hopeful the remaining 17 dogs are eventually healthy enough to be adopted," said Stringer. "Right now, we’re looking at about 0 per dog just to get the basic veterinary care. ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - Six months after the West Fire ripped through Alpine, residents still have an immense amount of work to do to rebuild.Colin Campbell's parents owned the Campbell Creek Ranch for 13 years before it burned in July. Campbell spoke with 10News in August at a benefit that raised at least ,000 for the victims of the fire.Sunday, on the six month anniversary of the fire, Campbell walked through the ranch, lending a window into his memories.Surrounding him, the ranch lay much the same as the day after the fire. Ashes and bricks covering the foundation of his parent's home, the pool drained, the white fence lining the driveway, melted. As he looked around him, he saw the ghost of what had been.He looked at the pool, and spoke of an old pact he made with his two sons, "at any time, on the coldest day of the year, I would plunge into the pool, and they always took it upon me to do it, and their timing was impeccable," he said laughing. His sons and wife would jump in after him.At the house, his fondest memory was of a train set his parents built for his boys. He described the wooden track built at knee height, right in front of the vast fireplace to ensure the kids were warm while playing happily for hours, "we spoiled them with trains."Over the past six months, volunteers and family members sifted through soot, unearthing treasures."Man it absolutely has been meaningful," Campbell said poignantly, "in fact there has been a picture of my wife, our wedding 23 years ago, that somehow, someway came out of the rubble."He was also struck by the signs of hope sprouting around the grounds, "you can see now it is greening up, in the mountainsides, they are growing back, and it's just incredible that the environment, they just reinvigorate themselves." He said the boys are young teens now and learning, while cleaning up the ranch, how nature prevails.Campbell's fight to protect the property is not over. "The erosion is our main concern," he said. With help from local leaders, sand bags held the weak soil mostly in place after recent rain.Campbell said he's incredibly thankful for the continued support of the community, and hopes in the next two years to rebuild and move his parents back onto the ranch. 2256

A Wisconsin woman who jumped in front of an oncoming train to save her mom is now feeling well enough to share her story. The incident first happened back in August.Katie Wenszell, 28, is a Milwaukee teacher. She, her mom and her sisters were on a girls trip to Atlanta, waiting for a train, when the unthinkable happened to her mother."All of a sudden, the guy came out of nowhere and just pushed her. I didn't have any time to grab her. She was literally in the air and hitting the tracks," Katie said. Katie remembers bits and pieces of the day, but says her sister told her she walked to the end of the platform and was trying to yell for her mom to get up."Then, I looked down to see the training coming and all I did was jump. She had her head and feet on the tracks? And I knew that if I didn't get her off, she was going to die no matter what. I decided it worked in the movie, let's lay her out flat, lay me down flat, and hopefully pray to god that it will work."Katie says she does not remember what happened after she jumped, that it "all becomes literally black."Although they don't know for certain what happened underneath the train, it appears Katie's plan worked.  Her mom, Susan says "she managed to get me between those two tracks. That train went over the top of me. I never got hit by that train."Susan did suffer a concussion and severe head injuries from the fall. The train did hit Katie, as it was coming to a stop.When asked about her injuries, Katie said she has "a reconstructed shoulder, smashed my face, so I have plates in my face. And I have amputated toes."She also believes the train dragged her by her necklace, causing serious injuries to her neck. She woke up in the hospital five days later with a tube down her throat."Literally the moment it got taken out, is my mom OK was the first thing that came out of my mouth. What did they tell you? They said yep, she's fine, she's here," Katie said. Katie says she was ecstatic to find out her mom was alive, although her mom was upset that Katie risked her life to save her. "She's 28, I'm 57. My goodness, I've had my life," Susan said. That life now includes helping Katie get better so she can walk on her own again. The amputated area is healing so well, Katie wanted to show it to us."When I first saw it, I was the only one who took it perfectly fine. After it started going down, I was like mom, look at the tiny alien foot, because it's really tiny," Katie said. As you can see, Katie has a really positive outlook and is working hard to walk again. She was supposed to be in China right now, teaching English and still hopes to go at some point.As for the stranger who pushed her mom, another passenger held him until authorities arrived.  The family has a Go Fund Me page to help with Katie's medical bills.  2870
