DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A woman in Florida is being charged with animal cruelty after being caught on video throwing a dog off a motel balcony.The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office shared body cam footage of the incident when they announced the arrest of 35-year-old Allison Murphy on Tuesday.Warning: Some may find the video below disturbingOfficers say they responded to the Dayton Beach motel around noon Monday after staff reported that Murphy had been standing over a railing and threatening to jump. She also allegedly attacked a maid.When law enforcement arrived, Murphy reportedly locked herself inside her room. After knocking several times, the sheriff’s office says the women came out with a leashed German shepherd, which she picked up and threw over the railing to the ground.Authorities say the dog landed feet first and ran away before being corralled by bystanders. It was then turned over to Volusia County Animal Services, who nicknamed her “Miracle,” because no name was provided.“Miracle” was taken to an animal hospital for emergency evaluation. She thankfully escaped serious injury, but an x-ray did reveal a sewing needle was lodged one of her thighs, according to the sheriff’s office. She underwent a procedure to remove it and is recovering in the care of a foster family, who wants to adopt her if a court grants animal services custody.As for Murphy, the sheriff’s office says she was taken into custody and will be facing felony charges of animal cruelty and resisting an officer with violence. 1528

DETROIT — Two Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers helped save a life Friday afternoon. The department says officer Ben Lasher was patrolling Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan when around 12:31 p.m. Michigan State Police notified him of a woman threatening to jump off the MacArthur Bridge. "She was very upset," Lasher said. "She was crying. She was looking over her shoulder at the river. I was quite concerned because she didn't want me to come across the barricade."At the scene, Lasher witnessed the woman crying while standing next to the guard rail of the bridge. “She asked me to stay by my patrol truck at first,” Lasher said. “I was able to talk to her and find out her name."Lasher continued talking with the woman, while officer Steven Converse — who was also patrolling Belle Isle — arrived to the scene. "The bridge isn't very tall but the cold water, the body won't accept," Lasher said. "You won't do well in that environment very long."Converse approached where the woman and Lasher were standing and helped convince her to go with them to Lasher's patrol truck and seek professional help. After several minutes, the woman agreed, and the officers helped her climb over the barricade and into the patrol truck for safety."Holiday seasons are hard," said Lasher. "A lot of people have strong feelings, good or bad, and this young lady was having a hard time. And I was able to be in the right place at the right time."What helped, in part, was the training these officers receive for these types of situations.“Part of what conservation officers are taught is to engage in conversation with the suicidal person and to ask what has happened that has brought them to this point of suicide,” said Michael Comer, a contract police psychologist for the DNR Law Enforcement Division. “COs listen to the person's story, establish a rapport and demonstrate that they care about the suicidal person. They have been taught that they will not be able to change the person's mind until they first understand the person's story and despair.”The woman was taken to a local hospital for a check-up. According to the DNR, the scene was cleared around 1:01 p.m., exactly 30 minutes after officer Lasher received the original call. "There's hope for tomorrow," Lasher said he told the woman. DEL MAR (CNS) - A 3-year-old filly suffered a fatal injury during a morning workout Saturday at the Del Mar.Lovely Lilia pulled up after the workout at about 5 a.m. and veterinarians said the horse could not be saved and was euthanized, according to Mac McBride, Del Mar's director of media.Lovely Lilia was eased in her final race, a mile turf race at Santa Anita Park June 12, which she led at the halfway point.Lovely Lilia made seven starts, winning twice and finishing second once, earning ,551.Del Mar made the safety of people and horses the leading theme of its 81st summer meet which began Friday with no fans in the stands for the first time because of the coronavirus pandemic.The meet's horse and rider safety initiatives amplified measures Del Mar introduced over the last several seasons of racing that led it to being recognized as one the nation's safest racetracks for 2018 and 2019, according to figures from The Jockey Club's Equine Injury Database provided by the track.Del Mar had a rate of 0.79 fatal injuries per 1,000 starts in 2018 and 0.62 in 2019. The national average for track's reporting was 1.68.While there were no racing deaths, there were four training deaths during last year's summer meet and three racing deaths and two in training during the fall meet.Del Mar is continuing its Entry Review Panel of regulatory veterinarians who will oversee the entries of all horses and provide an additional review of each of their medical, training and racing histories. The panel will recommend to the track's stewards that any horse it deems unfit for competition be barred from racing.Del Mar is furthering its adoption of reforms modeled after the International Federation Horseracing Association requirements. Rules surrounding nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories have been enhanced and extended, and additional rules regarding other equine medications have been clarified and codified.Random testing will continue for any horse at Del Mar, including ones readying for, or having just completed, morning workouts.Just as they were last summer, veterinarians are stationed at elevated observation points at the facility to oversee morning workouts and will have the ability -- through communication with outriders -- to remove horses from the racetrack and have them undergo a follow-up soundness examination.Exercise riders and jockeys again will be prohibited from using a riding crop to encourage their horses during morning workouts.The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club created a stakeholder advisory committee last summer represented by trainers, veterinarians, jockeys, racing surfaces maintenance personnel and management that met regularly to discuss safety practices, operations and track surfaces. (KGTV) - An East County couple is making a plea for help, fearful a power shutoff will be hazardous to their health.Holly and Alan Shields got the call from SDG&E Wednesday night, warning about possible power shutoff. Hours later, the power was shut off at their home in Descanso."My stomach just dropped. You know, it was like, 'What am I going to do?'" said Holly Shields."Nervous and stressed out," added Alan Shields.Both Holly and Alan require breathing aids. Alan, who served in the Army as a welder, suffers from chronic lung issues and must use a CPAP machine to help him breathe while he sleeps.Holly is battling breast cancer."I take very high steroids, which has cut down on the amount of oxygen my lungs can accept, so I have to be on an oxygen machine when I can't breathe," said Holly.Because of the power shutoff, neither Holly nor Alan will be able to their machines."I’m scared to death," said Holly.The two do have a generator, which is outside and has enough juice to power a freezer and heat their seven tortoises."The tortoises have to stay warm. Otherwise, they will go into hibernation, and it will kill them," said Holly.The couple says they couldn't afford an electrician to hook up their generator inside, and can't afford another generator."He lost a lot of work, both of us did, to COVID," said Holly.The couple now finding themselves in a precarious position, worried about how long their power will be out, and unable to breathe easily. They're hoping someone will lend them a generator and help them hook it up."It's tricky hooking it up to a home with solar panels. We have solar panels, but only generate power and send it to SDG&E. (KGTV/AP) -- A notorious 86-year-old jewel thief convicted of a theft in Mission Valley is now charged with shoplifting.Doris Payne was arrested July 17 near Atlanta and charged with misdemeanor shoplifting after a Walmart employee said she tried to leave the Chamblee store with items she hadn't paid for.Payne was on probation at the time after pleading guilty in March to a felony shoplifting charge for trying to steal a ,000 necklace from a department store in December.
