Parkway, which runs between the Plaza and the park north from West 47th Street to West 43rd Street, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a June 9 commission meeting.He also proposed renaming the fountain to Dream Fountain, a nod to King’s famed “I Have A Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.Several major Kansas City-area civic groups issued a statement in support of Goode’s proposed changes, but the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City said it doesn’t believe the parkway is an appropriate place to honor King.The KC Parks and Rec Board of Commissioners do not plan to introduce a formal resolution regarding a possible name change at its next meeting, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30.Currently, there is no timeline for when, or if, the board will address the possibility of renaming the fountain and parkway.The effort to rename the fountain is not new. Jones, who won eight NBA championships as a Celtics player in the 1960s and two more as the coach of the Celtics team that took the titles in 1984 and '86, has died. He was 88.The Celtics said Jones' family confirmed on Friday that he died at an assisted living facility in Connecticut, where he had been receiving care for Alzheimer's disease for the past few years.In a statement, the Celtics said Jones was both a "fierce competitor and a gentleman.""He made his teammates better, and he got the most out of the players he coached," the Celtics said. Best Buy informed its employees on Wednesday of plans to close all 250 of its mobile standalone stores in the United States by the end of May, a company spokesperson confirmed. The stores are predominately located within malls and are much smaller than Best Buy's big box stores. The mobile standalone shops are mostly used for the sale of cellphones and accessories. These locations do not sell some of Best Buy's bigger ticket items such as televisions, computers and appliances. The standalone stores are only responsible for 1 percent of Best Buy's overall revenue.Although thousands of employees will be affected by Wednesday's announcement, the company said the goal is to transfer employees currently working in standalone stores into Best Buy's big box locations. Best Buy said that 85 percent of its standalone stores are within 3 miles of a big box store. "Employees will have three months to work with internal recruiters, and field and store leaders across the country are rallying to help transition employees to big box stores and open in-home advisor roles," Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly wrote in a letter to employees, and shared with Scripps. "For those who leave the company after May 31, we will give them severance and assist them in finding roles outside Best Buy."Despite Best Buy closing its mall locations, the big box stores will continue selling cellphones and accessories. "We feel good about the opportunity to retain customers and transition them to another one of our sales channels.
