CHONGQING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Environmental sanitation workers from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality have collected 78,000 tonnes of garbage from the Yangtze River near the Three Gorges Dam, ensuring the dam's safe and effective operation after its water level was raised.More than 68,000 workers in nearly 21,000 boats retrieved the garbage. In late October, the water level in the dam was lifted to its designed maximum of 175 meters, allowing the dam to play its full flood control, power generation, navigation and water supply roles, said Wang Yuankai, a Chongqing municipal work administrator.Raising the dam's water level increased the surface area of water in the dam. It also increased garbage collectors' workload, with about 60 percent more garbage appearing. The cleanup operation helped ensure the water quality of the dam and its navigability. The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest water-control and hydropower project.

The China-Pakistan trade volume only accounted for one-tenth of Pakistan's overall foreign trade, he said, voicing his hope that the two-way trade could top 10 billion dollars as soon as possible. With regard to trade imbalance, Wen said China understood the concern of Pakistan on the imbalance, and has taken measures to address the issue."China is ready to work closely with Pakistan to push forward the building of a bilateral free trade area in an all-round way, and gradually grant zero-tariff status to more Pakistani products," he said.He vowed to send a trade and investment promotion delegation to Pakistan for purchase purposes at an appropriate time, hold commodity fairs for South Asian countries, and offer favorable terms for Pakistani products.Calling trade cooperation a link for the China-Pakistan cooperation, Wen said the bilateral trade has witnessed remarkable growth and benefited both peoples.Bilateral trade volume increased to 6.8 billion dollars in 2009 from 1 billion dollars in 2000.Though affected by the global financial crisis and natural disasters, the two-way trade in the first 10 months of 2010 reached the total volume of 2009, an increase of 27 percent over the same period of last year, Wen said.

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Remote villages across Yongning County of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region have been connected to a safe water supply thanks to a newly-completed water project. The project, launched in August 2010 and concluded on Nov. 27, has ensured that 100,000 people in 44 villages of Yongning will have access to safe water for drinking.People in the county had long suffered from a severe shortage of safe water because the area's surface water contained excessive amounts of fluorin and iron. The project was initiated after local authorities increased their efforts to provide safe drinking water after Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the region.During an inspection to a well-drilling site at Yuanlin Village of southern Yongning on March 23, 2010, President Hu stressed that efforts be made to ensure more people have access to safe water supplies.
