Once every 20 years, Jupiter and Saturn nearly cross paths in the sky, and this year, the two largest planets in the solar system will cross paths during the winter solstice.WATCH LIVE: The Lowell Observatory in Arizona has clear skies of the event. You can watch it live starting at 7 p.m. ET by clicking here. According to EarthSky, the two planets will be just .1 degree apart at their closest point on December 21. Being so close, the two planets will appear to be roughly the same size as one-fifth a full moon.According to EarthSky, the December 2020 conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn is the closest the two planets have been to each other in the night sky since 1623.However, people back then were not able to see the celestial event, because of its proximity to the sun, according to Amy Oliver, a spokeswoman for the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Oliver told The Boston Globe that the last time people would have noticed two planets coming together this closely would have been in 1226, during the Middle Ages, nearly 800 years ago.Scientists say the two planets will appear in the early evening sky for the rest of 2020 and Jupiter will be the brightest object in the western sky for the rest of the year. 1238

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) - When an earthquake strikes seconds of warning can save lives. That's why, for decades, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has been working with partners to create a warning system to do just that. "Eventually we would like to have something like an Amber Alert where you would get a text message that says shaking is about to occur in your area in a few seconds," said Alex Cadiao, a USGS Field Engineer. He's part of a small team which travels to remote parts of the state to install earthquake sensors into the ground. They provided 10News exclusive access to the region's newest sensor in Orange County. RELATED: 'ShakeAlert' message buzzes San Diego County phones"Ultimately we just want a grid across the whole state," said Christopher Bruton, Research Engineer at Caltech's Seismological Laboratory. There are 45 sensors throughout San Diego County, and dozens more are planned for the rest of Southern California. "The more sensors we have, the better the data, the greater coverage we have and better the quality, and faster response time of these stations," said Cadiao. The sensors work by detecting the initial, less-destructive waves of an earthquake, alerting people shaking is coming and to take cover.Seconds of warning can be critical for surgeons in the operating room, halting trains, or shutting off gas lines. The City of Los Angeles currently has the ShakeAlert app available to people in the city; the hope is that technology will eventually work statewide. "I get a lot of gratification knowing one day this will help save a lot of lives," said Cadiao. The engineers say it will likely be a few more years until all of Southern California will get ShakeAlert warnings on their cell phones. It's being tested in small groups, but they want to make sure the technology is reliable before making it available to everyone. 1888

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Oceanside officials are closing beach parking lots this weekend in order to limit holiday gatherings as the county sees a rise in coronavirus cases. The city says beach parking lots west of the railroad tracks, with the exception of certain Harbor lots near the Harbor Village, will be closed from Friday at 8:00 a.m. through Monday, July 6, at 8:00 a.m.The city will also close all public parking lots in the downtown area west of the railroad tracks and all public parking lots in the Oceanside Small Craft Harbor, except lots 1, 4, 5, 8A, 8B and 9.RELATED: Crowds expected as San Diego beaches remain open this 4th of July"With Los Angeles County beaches closed, San Diego County State Beach parking lots closed, and several Orange County beaches following suit, it was deemed prudent to close Oceanside beach parking lots for the holiday weekend in order to minimize crowded conditions, limit gatherings, increase physical distancing, and slow the spread of the coronavirus," the city said in a statement. There will also be no fireworks displays in Oceanside or at Camp Pendleton on Saturday. The decision comes after San Diego County enacted several measures this week to slow the spread of the coronavirus, including a restaurant curfew and limits on bars. Statewide, San Diego County is the only Southern California county not under new measures to suspend indoor activities in certain businesses and all bar operations.RELATED: San Diego County not named to state's watch list, but leaders warn it may happen soonHowever, local official warn that the county could be added to the state's new mandates as soon as Monday.Despite this, the county has said that beaches will remain open but cities will have the option to close them for the weekend if they chose."With COVID-19 cases rising in the County, it’s essential to take measures to break the chain of transmission in our region, and each of us has a role to play. Please refrain from gathering with those outside of your own household, and wear face coverings when you leave your home and are within 6’ of others," the city added.RELATED: New restrictions placed on bars, restaurants in San Diego County amid coronavirus 2216

On Saturday, a gunman stormed the Tree of Life Synagogue, killing 11 people in what the ADL called the deadliest attack ever on Jews in the United States. The horrific, hate-filled minutes were a raw manifestation of anger, division and anti-Semitism.But the response has been the opposite as faiths and cultures came together in grief and solidarity.Crowdfunding campaign "Muslims Unite for Pittsburgh Synagogue" has raised more than 5,000 to help the shooting victims."We wish to respond to evil with good, as our faith instructs us, and send a powerful message of compassion through action," the donation page says. The campaign is organized by the Muslim-American non-profits CelebrateMercy and MPower Change. It's hosted by LaunchGood, an online crowdfunding platform for the Muslim community. The campaign page invites all faiths to contribute, and the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh will work directly with the Tree of Life Synagogue to distribute the funds to the injured victims and grieving families."The Pittsburgh community is our family; what happens to one of us, is felt by us all." The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh said in a statement on this attack. This unifying sentiment is one of the fundraiser's main tenets."Through this campaign, we hope to send a united message from the Jewish and Muslim communities that there is no place for this type of hate and violence in America." the LaunchGood page says.  1458

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Oceanside is taking control of its water destiny, investing in a facility to purify recycled water from homes.“It’s not being used, it’s really a waste. A lot of that water is going out to the ocean and it’s really a precious resource," said Cari Dale, Water Utilities Director for the city. This Fall they'll break ground on the Pure Water Oceanside facility, which will sit right next to the San Luis Rey Water Reclamation Facility. The process uses state-of-the-art water purification steps that replicate and accelerate nature's natural recycling process. The facility will create between 3 and 5 million gallons per day of high-quality drinking water for the Oceanside community.Currently, the city gets most of its water from outside sources, which is costly and subject to drought and environmental disasters.Pure Water Oceanside will be able to provide 30 percent of the city's water supply.“It’s important because it’s controlling our own destiny, we’re really reusing something that would otherwise would be thrown away, so really it’s being a good environmental steward," said Dale.Orange County has been using a similar system for years.Funding for the million project will come from the city, as well as federal and state grants. Dale says residents will also see small increases in their bills. They hope to have the new facility running by the end of 2021. You can learn more about the project through this promotional video. How the water purification process works:Microfiltration - Filters remove bacteria and suspended solids from reclaimed water.Reverse Osmosis - Ultra-fine filters remove salt, viruses, bacteria, pharmaceuticals and chemicals.Ultraviolet Light and Advanced Oxidation - The final polishing step neutralizes any remaining substances.Injection - Minerals are added before the water is injected into the Mission Basin.Treatment - Water is extracted from the aquifer and treated again at the city’s Mission Basin Groundwater Purification Facility.Delivery - The water is distributed to customers! 2078
