BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The gross domestic product (GDP) in China's western regions grew by 13.5 percent year on year in 2009, much higher than the country's revised national GDP growth of 9.1 percent, according to a report issued here on Saturday.It is the eighth year in a row for these regions to score a double-digit GDP growth after the Chinese government launched a "West Development" campaign ten years ago, read the report on the economic development of China's western regions issued by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.It attributed the GDP growth mainly to China's policies to stimulate domestic demand and the increase in investment, despite the global financial crisis.Five provinces, regions or municipalities saw an increase of more then ten percent in the disposable income of urban citizens in 2009, as the income gap between China's western and eastern regions had begun to narrow, the report said.The average yearly per capita disposable income of urban citizens in the western regions was 12,971 yuan (about 1,918 U.S. dollars) in 2008.Noting that economic development in the western regions still heavily relied on natural resources, the report said efforts should be made to increase the regions' capacity to ensure sustainable development, while establishing a low-carbon industrial system.

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's domestic corn supply was adequate, and a recent price increase was the result of market speculation, a senior official told Xinhua Thursday.Shang Qiangmin, director at the China National Grain and Oils Information Center, said both the supply and corn reserves were adequate in China and the government was determined to regulate the corn market."Imbalance between corn supply and demand is a misjudgement," Shang said.Although floods that ravaged the country's northeastern regions in late July have caused adverse impacts on regional corn growing, final output was expected to increase from one year earlier due to the expanding of planting areas, Shang said."China has enough corn reserves to meet market demand," he said.The buying boom in the northeastern region is currently caused by enterprises' increasing corn stocks on speculation of price increase, he said.According to Shang, corn stocks at major grain enterprises in northeastern Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, increased by 5.12 million tonnes at the end of July compared with one year earlier.The Chinese government has strengthened macro control of corn market by increasing supply and cracking down on illegal activities that force up corn prices.As the world's major corn producer and consumer, China's annual corn production and consumption both exceed 150 million tonnes.

SALZBURG, Austria, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Austrian President Heinz Fischer and Chancellor Werner Faymann on Monday met respectively with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Salzburg in the northern part of the country.Fischer recalled with pleasure his January visit to China, and asked Yang to convey his greetings to Chinese President Hu Jintao.In the 40 years since Austria and China established diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have witnessed continuous development, with frequent exchange of high-level visits, fruitful outcome in trade and other areas, as well as close consultations on international affairs, said Fischer during the meeting.He added that Austria would like to further strengthen its friendly relations with China.Yang conveyed President Hu's greetings to Fischer. GUANGZHOU, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Two nuclear power stations under construction have not been affected by a mild earthquake that struck south China's Guangdong Province Friday, company officials said.According to the provincial earthquake monitoring network, an earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter Scale Friday hit the junction of Taishan City and Yangjiang City where the two nuclear power stations are located."The nuclear power stations being built were not at all affected as the facilities were designed to withstand at least 8-magnitude earthquakes," said a spokesman of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Corporation (CGNPC).He said the sites of these two power stations were carefully chosen and approved by the China Earthquake Administration. Records show that the strongest earthquake that shook the sites did not exceed 6.0 in magnitude.The construction of the Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station -- with a full installed capacity of 6 million kilowatts -- started in December 2008 and is planned to be put into commercial operation in 2013. The construction of the Taishan Nuclear Power Station -- with an initial installed capacity of 3.5 million kilowatts -- started in 2009 and is expected to be completed around 2014, the CGNPC said.

BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The State Council's policies to rein in rapidly soaring housing prices in cities will continue and local governments should implement them "unswervingly", according to a statement released Monday from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, while also denying some media reports on a possible policy withdrawal."We will urge local governments to make sure that they strictly implement the differentiated housing loans policy to crack down on housing speculations," the ministry said in a brief statement posted on its website.The ministry added it would adopt "positive" measures to increase the supply of commercial homes in the market, speed up construction of housing for low-income residents and renovation of shantytowns, and strengthen supervision of the real estate market conditions.The statement came shortly after the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released its latest figures on housing prices in Chinese cities.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 11.4 percent year on year in June, one percentage point lower than the increase in May, according to NBS statistics.This was the second consecutive month that China's property prices grew at a slower pace. Property prices in the 70 large- and medium-sized cities grew 12.4 percent year on year in May, 0.4 percentage point lower than in April.The State Council, China's Cabinet, introduced a series of tightening measures in April to rein in soaring house prices and curb speculation, including tightened scrutiny of developers' financing, suspension of loans for third-home purchases and higher down-payment requirements for second-home purchases.Housing prices almost doubled in some popular Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai in 2009, prompting the Chinese government to take measures to curb these excessive hikes.
