But waiting for the bus or getting off after school can pose a far greater danger.The risk was highlighted this month, as at least five children lost their lives when they were hit by drivers near school bus stops across the U.S. At least seven other children were hurt in bus stop incidents.Now, a petition on WhiteHouse.gov seeks to call upon national leaders to create and sign legislation that institutes stricter penalties on drivers who violate rules around stopping for school buses.The petition makes suggestions such as 30 days in jail and 90-day license suspensions. Overall, wrecks involving school transportation, including buses, make up a tiny fraction of deadly vehicle incidents — less than 1 percent of nearly 325,000 fatal crashes in the US from 2006 to 2015, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show. 908

Pizza Hut has teamed up with an educational non-profit to launch a series of antiracism resources for educators.On Wednesday, the pizza company announced they were partnering with First Book on the initiative Empowering Educators, which will provide books, videos, and activities for educators to use when talking about race.The initiative was created after First Book surveyed teachers in 2019 and found that 66% wanted to find a way to talk about racism with students, but didn't feel comfortable doing so.“From the neighborhood to the national level, America is on a critical journey: from identifying racism, to deeper understanding – and finally to dismantling systemic racism,” said Kyle Zimmer, president, CEO and co-founder of First Book in the press release. “To support this journey, First Book is honored to partner with Pizza Hut to launch an unprecedented effort to empower educators – and the children they serve. PITTSBURGH - A US Postal Service employee is on leave after bags of undelivered mail were found on the side of the street for trash pick-up outside a home near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, according to multiple reports.Several bags were reported to the US Postal Service Office of Inspector General Sunday and they are investigating.An agent with the USPS OIG says the bags contained a variety of mail.“USPS OIG Special Agents recovered several different classes of mail, including business mail, flats, and small amount of first class mail. We expect to perform a piece count of the mail today, and make arrangements to have the mail delivered to customers as soon as feasible,” Special Agent Scott Balfour said in a statement released Tuesday.“Once USPS OIG special agents conclude their investigation, the case will be presented for federal prosecution to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.”A post office employee is on leave without pay in connection with this investigation.This is the second time in just the last week a mail person is under investigation for allegedly not delivering mail.According to WPXI, the other incident was caught on surveillance camera, showing a postal carrier dumping mail inside a garbage can. Agents say a ballot application and political advertisements were found.Balfour noted that the Postal Service has 630,000 employees and the majority are "hard-working, trustworthy individuals" who work around the clock to deliver the country’s mail. POINT LOMA, Calif., (KGTV)— Rainy conditions did not deter thousands of people from participating in the Second Annual Walk Against Hate-San Diego. “I walk for peace and for equal rights for people,” a pre-teen participant said. Three thousand five hundred people joined the Anti-Defamation League’s biggest event of the year, walking to show that San Diego is no place for hate. “Especially in the aftermath of something that is so tragic happening to our community,” ADL-San Diego’s Director of Development, Lindsey Zipkin said. Still fresh in the minds of participants is the Poway Synagogue Shooting on April 27, 2019. Zipkin said there was a huge jump in registration, right after the tragedy.“It gives people a really great way to come together to support one another and to celebrate diversity and respect. And really show that this is really what San Diego is about. No place for hate and not that terrible things that just happened to us,” Zipkin said. 10News also spoke to 15-year-old Nadiv Meltzer, who said the incident opened up a serious dialogue at home. His father, Rabbi Scott Meltzer, talked to him about overcoming bias and hate. “I think it’s not ideal that we needed such as an exhibition of hate and violence to get people together, but I think it’s important that people do get together,” Meltzer said. PHOENIX (KNXV/KGTV) - A small plane that crashed on a Phoenix street Monday morning -- killing both passengers  -- was just sold from a pilot in Solana Beach.The victims have been identified as 54 year-old Theodore Rich and 49 year-old Elaine Carpenter. FAA officials said the aircraft involved is a single-engine, home-built Acroduster. The plane went down in the intersection of 7th St. and Deer Valley Dr., near an FBI field office, at around 6:50 a.m. local time.One eyewitness said he saw the plane go down. At first he thought it was aerobatics, but after seeing the plane heading straight for the ground, he knew something was wrong. Video from the scene showed emergency crews working around debris in the roadway near several damaged cars. Police told media on scene the vehicles had substantial damage but no one on the ground was hurt.10News reporter Lauren Davis talked to Avi Maltzman, the Solana Beach man who just sold the plane to Rich this weekend. Maltzman said he flew with Rich for several touch-and-goes and described Rich as an experienced pilot. Maltzman said Rich even called him from Arizona just to let him know he made it home safely. “He impressed me very well with his flight skills. He did good eight or nine landings. He was comfortable and I felt comfortable with him," said Maltzman.Maltzman said the plane was built by professionally in Santa Barbara in 1993. Maltzman bought the plane in 2011 and said it was in great condition. Those who knew Rich said flying was his passion. They said Rich died doing what he loved.    1614
