SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As schools reopen with distance learning, a local nonprofit is working to bridge the digital divide during a critical time.Tammy Hershfield co-founded Computers 2 San Diego Kids 17 years ago, providing refurbished computers to low-income children. She says the local digital divide remains a big one."One in four children in San Diego don't have computer in their home, and 50 percent of those are low income families," said Hershfield.The digital divide is now even more concerning because of COVID-19, as students begin the school year with distance learning."These kids were already at a disadvantage. They were having to do their learning just in the classroom. Not they don't even have that, so we need to get them these computers," said Hershfield.Since the pandemic started, the nonprofit has refurbished and distributed nearly 18,000 computers to local kids. Dozens of volunteers and staff are working on the computers every day."We hired 14 additional staff. We're open six days a week, working 10 hours a day to get things done," said Hershfield.Families receiving the computers pick up the computers at the nonprofit's warehouse in the Miramar area. Hershfield remembers one family, a furloughed single mother of 4 with a 17-year-old daughter applying for college and loans on a phone. That family received two computers."Mom cried, and I cried. The digital disparity is real, and COVID-19 has put a on shining light on it. We can band together and help the people that need the help," said Hershfield.Hershfield says they have about 6,000 computers being worked on and need more donated computers.The nonprofit has partnered with Cox Communications to include free internet access for up to four months. 1742

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Country legend Clint Black is moving beyond Nashville stardom with his first-ever musical, now playing at San Diego’s Old Globe Theater. ‘Looking for Christmas’ is about Staff Sergeant Mike Randolf, who returns from deployment to Afghanistan to be with his family for the holiday."Mike Randolf is making it home just in time for Christmas but he's not really quite home. And through his daughter and her excitement over Christmas, understanding how it works, and then ultimately why it works and why we do it is one of the things that propels Mike forward,” Black told 10News.Clint Black created the idea from his 1995 holiday album and wrote the musical with playwright James Sasser."It was a real odyssey for me to try to find the true meaning of Christmas and it's what we're trying very hard to get across in the play."Randolf struggles to find the joy of the season with the help of his family."For me, the true meaning behind Christmas as I discovered it through writing the album was really the message to look around to others and what they need. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – California and two other Western states have issued travel advisories that include a 14-day quarantine for those visiting the states or returning home from outside travel.California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee put the advisories into action for their respective states on Friday. The announcement comes as travel is expected to ramp up for the holidays.The advisories urge “visitors entering their states or returning home from travel outside these states to self-quarantine to slow the spread of the virus. The travel advisories urge against non-essential out-of-state travel, ask people to self-quarantine for 14 days after arriving from another state or country and encourage residents to stay local.”CALIFORNIA TRAVEL ADVISORY ANNOUNCEMENTIn addition to the self-quarantine, the advisories recommend travelers “limit their interactions to their immediate household. The advisories define essential travel as travel for work and study, critical infrastructure support, economic services and supply chains, health, immediate medical care and safety and security.”Newsom said in a news release, “Travel increases the risk of spreading COVID-19, and we must all collectively increase our efforts at this time to keep the virus at bay and save lives.”Brown added, “COVID-19 does not stop at state lines. As hospitals across the West are stretched to capacity, we must take steps to ensure travelers are not bringing this disease home with them. If you do not need to travel, you shouldn’t. This will be hard, especially with Thanksgiving around the corner. But the best way to keep your family safe is to stay close to home.”“Limiting and reducing travel is one way to reduce the further spread of the disease. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California health officials released new guidelines for indoor and outdoor youth sports, whether it is school-related, community sponsored, or club sports.The new guidance from the state’s Department of Public Health also applies to recreational adult sports.According to the state, inter-team competitions will not be allowed until Jan. 25, 2021, at the earliest. State officials will revisit this plan during the first week of January to see if any changes need to be made.Players and teams are allowed to practice, but health and safety measures -- such as social distancing -- must be in place.In the new guidelines, sports are categorized by indoor or outdoor, and then they are classified under three categories: low-contact, moderate-contact, and high-contact. The sports are then grouped based on risk tier.For San Diego County, which is in the state’s purple tier as of Dec. 15, only outdoor low-contact sports -- which includes golf, tennis, and swimming -- are allowed to compete.Once the county reaches the red tier, sports like baseball, softball, and cheerleading will be able to compete.Sports such as basketball, football, soccer, and volleyball would not be allowed to compete until San Diego County is in the state’s orange tier.The state’s new guidance comes months after children, parents, and coaches held rallies and voiced their frustrations about not being able to play.Because of the state’s rules, many teams -- specifically baseball and soccer -- have traveled to states like Arizona to play competitively because of less strict rules.Under California’s new guidance, teams can only compete against teams from the same county, and they cannot compete outside of the state.Click here to view the state's complete guidelines 1777

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning drivers that a portion of northbound SR-125 will close Sunday.According to Caltrans, northbound SR-125 will close from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. between SR-905 and Birch Road.The north and southbound shoulder bike lane between SR-905 and Birch Road will also close between the same hours.According to Caltrans, the closure is for the testing of new technology, though the agency didn’t specify what technology it will be testing. 468
