SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A war veteran who used to deliver meals to seniors in the North County is now receiving them himself.City councilman Mark Kersey honored Jim Munday on Wednesday morning for his contributions. This week, the long-time Rancho Bernardo resident will celebrate a birthday most of us can only hope to reach—102 years old.Councilman Kersey brought him a blanket, flowers, some food, and a special certificate in honor of his birthday and thanking him for all of his contributions to the Meals on Wheels of San Diego County, but it's even more meaningful because Jim was once a Meals on Wheels volunteer himself.“He started delivering when he was 90 and now he's 102, so he's a pretty special guy,” Kersey said. At 102, Munday is quiet, modest, and hard of hearing but still very much aware of the world around him.“A good day for a birthday party,” he said as he sat outside. The World War II vet fought in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving several medals including a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.His own artwork lines his living room. He started painting when was 90 and says he learned from watching Bob Ross on PBS.In 2003, Munday’s wife, Mildred, passed away, but their great-grandson, Hudson, and daughter Millie, were both on hand for this major milestone.“He's a very honest, generous person, and I'm very proud of him,” Millie said. Now his community is doing the same for him.“To be able to give back to someone who's given so much is something that makes San Diego and Rancho Bernardo a special place,” Kersey said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A taste of Comic-Con fun hits town early, featuring San Diego's cutest "underdogs."PAWmicon returns, this year at the future site of Balboa Park's Comic-Con Museum (formerly the Hall of Champions.) The event invites dog fans out for a day of superhero-themed fun with their furry companions to benefit the Helen Woodward Animal Center's orphaned animals and programs.The event will also host a canine and owner costume contest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego resident is one of three patients across California infected with salmonella linked to an herbal supplement.The 44-year-old resident is the latest patient in the multi-state outbreak, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Service Agency.The supplement, kratom, is used as a stimulant and opioid substitute. It's also known as thang, kakuam, thom, ketom, biak, and Mitragyna speciosa, according to county health officials.RELATED: 28 sick in salmonella outbreak linked to kratom, CDC saysThe San Diego patient fell ill in January but has since recovered. They were not hospitalized, officials said.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified at least 40 cases of salmonellosis in 27 states. Fourteen patients have been hospitalized. The CDC has identified kratom products as the likely source, though a specific brand or supplier has yet to be named.CDC officials recommend people do not consume kratom in any form.RELATED: If it's not the flu, you might be sick because of this virusKratom is an herb that is currently legal in most parts of California and the U.S. The FDA issued a ban on imports of the herb in 2014.In 2016, the City of San Diego also passed a ban on the sale, possession, and distribution of mitragynine and hydroxyl-mitragynine, which are active components in kratom. Since 2014, there have been 10 deaths in the county associated with mitragynine.Salmonellosis is a common intestinal infection traditionally associated with undercooked poultry or eggs, contaminated water, or unpasteurized dairy products. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After nearly two decades of delays and setbacks, San Ysidro community members celebrated the completion of a million major road reconstruction project Monday.For years the half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road in between San Ysidro High and San Ysidro Middle Schools lacked many safety features to protect the students who walk to and from school.An unfinished dirt path was used as a sidewalk with no fence to keep students away from oncoming vehicle traffic, no street lights or proper signage and no barriers to keep pedestrians from slipping down a steep canyon.After three years, the stretch of road now includes the safety features the community had been asking for for years. The roadway was widened and realigned, sidewalks and bike lanes were added, there's now a retaining wall, signage and lighting.The City of San Diego says the project took so long to complete after the initial groundbreaking because of the rough terrain crews had to work through.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced reforms to overhaul the City’s infrastructure program back in 2015. He says that increased funding each year and helped speed up high priority projects, like the one on Old Otay Mesa Road. This project was one of more than 60 neighborhood projects that were fully funded after Faulconer’s reforms went into effect."Parents have a peace of mind knowing that their kids have a safe path to and from school," said Faulconer at a news conference Monday.The half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road, which was closed off to traffic for several years, officially reopened on Monday. 1612

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An hours-long standoff between San Diego Police and a burglary suspect ended late Thursday night in the Marina area.The standoff, which started at about 4:30 p.m., occurred in the area of West Harbor Dr., between Kettner Blvd. and Pacific Highway. Police called Emergency Negotiation Team and SWAT officers, and a Psychiatric Emergency Response Team to the scene. Shortly after 11 p.m., SDPD said the San Diego Police suspect had been taken into custody.No further information was immediately available. 530
