SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This Labor Day, the Little Italy community will celebrate their annual Stickball Tournament, honoring the East Coast past time made popular in several neighborhoods.The sport draws on the area's heritage that began decades ago.Since the 1920s, Little Italy has served as a ethnic business and residential hub. But as the tuna industry declined, about 35% of Little Italy disappeared with it and because of the construction of Interstate 5.But today, locals are working to restore the area to its business and cultural roots. Part of that, is stickball. Little Italy's tournament comes around every Labor Day weekend, giving spectators and players the chance to relive some childhood memories. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The public’s help is being sought in finding the driver in an Ocean Beach hit-and-run crash that killed a skateboarder.On June 4, at around 10:30 p.m., Cameron Loren was riding his skateboard westbound in the 4500 block of Voltaire Street, in the middle of the road, when he was struck by a westbound vehicle from behind.San Diego police said the driver fled the scene, leaving the 25-year-old Loren on the street with injuries.Emergency crews responded to the incident, but Loren was declared dead at the scene, according to police.A description of the driver was not available, and investigators believe the vehicle that struck Loren was a light-colored sedan that may have a damaged windshield and roofline.Anyone with information on this case, including the location of the driver or the vehicle involved, is urged to contact the SDPD Traffic Division at 858-495-7807 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to ,000 for information that leads to an arrest. 1026

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The suspect of a Spring Valley murder nearly seven years has been arrested in New York.Waverly James, 49, was arrested in New York for the Dec. 6, 2012, murder of 52-year-old Stanford Roy Johnson, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.Deputies say they were called to a home in the 9000 block of Lemon St. on Dec. 6, 2012, for a welfare check. Deputies found the rear door open and discovered Johnson dead from multiple stab wounds.James was identified as a suspect and arrested on a warrant in New York. He will be extradited to San Diego and booked for murder. 599

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The plaques at the Hillcrest pride monument have been restores after being vandalized in February. According to the Hillcrest Business Association, the repairs cost roughly ,500. All the money came through donations from local businesses, the association said. The plaques were vandalized in early February. Pictures show faces and the pride flag scratched out.
