SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A shopping trip in City Heights ended with a flurry of anti-gay slurs and a road rage assault.On Tuesday afternoon, Marco Aguirre spent an hour shopping, before heading back to his truck, parked in the 3700 block on University Avenue."I back out and lightly bump the car behind me," said Aguirre, 49.Aguirre says he saw two men emerge from an older-model, red sedan. Aguirre apologized, offering to show his insurance, but the men were agitated."The driver came on my side and the passenger came on the other side. Both of them were screaming," said Aguirre.With his cellphone, Aguirre, who is openly gay, capturing the profanities, including a string of anti-gay slurs. Aguirre was frozen. "I feel terrible. Panicked," said Aguirre.He says the slurs continued for about 15 minutes, before he decided to get out of the car to assess the damage."I see no damage to my truck and no damage to their vehicle," said Aguirre. Aguirre says when he stepped onto the sidewalk, he was attacked."One of the guys grabbed my phone and smashed it into the sidewalk. The same guy punched me in the face, under my left eye," said Aguirre. Aguirre says the two men got in the car and took off, leaving him with swelling under his left eye. The incident also left him determined to find the two men."It's not right. I need to take a stand. This is my neighborhood, and I don't want to feel threatened in my own neighborhood," said Aguirre.Aguirre says he actually recorded the entire episode up until the phone was damaged, but only a minute or so ended up in the cloud.Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Police at 619-531-2000. 1654

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego police cruiser struck a man that officers were trying to arrest, police said Monday.The incident happened at around 4:15 a.m. in the 4000 block of Winona Avenue in the City Heights area.Police said officers tried to stop a man riding a bicycle without a light, but he rode away.An officer got out of his squad car without putting it in park, and the vehicle rolled and tapped the bicyclist, police said.The bicyclist was taken to the hospital for an evaluation and later released to police custody. 537

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sign advertising a block party at the home of a registered sex offender is causing concern in Rancho Bernardo.“We would like to invite you and your kids to a neighborhood get together” read the sign, which was posted outside a home on Bernardo Oaks Drive in the Seven Oaks retirement neighborhood this week.“I always keep an eye on that house because I know there’s a registered sex offender that lives there,” said Susan Sutherland.Sutherland told 10News she looked up her community on the Megan’s Law website four years ago and found a listing for a neighbor who had had been convicted of lewd acts on a child under 14, according to Sutherland“I come from a background of abuse. I can’t live with myself if I allow a child to get hurt. I can’t live with that,” Sutherland said.The sign was posted by the contractor who recently renovated the home, which is owned by the man's mother. 10News reached out to Elor Energy, which said it had no prior knowledge of the man's past. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid the national conversation on systemic racism, there is growing momentum for a campaign to change the name of a local high school and its mascot.Recently, sisters Emma and Charlotte Taila described the time to act as "a now-or-never moment."Emily is a recent graduate of Serra High School. Charlotte is an incoming junior. They started a Change.org petition drive, reviving an effort to change the school's mascot, a conquistador."[The mascot] represents Spanish colonialism and the brutal impact that it had on Native Americans," said Emma.The numbers of signatures climbed quickly, and then, they got some surprise backing from school leadership."She liked the mascot change and wanted to go a step further and go for a rebranding," said Charlotte."She" is Serra High principal Erica Renfree. In an email to the school community, she proposed not just a mascot change, but a name change to Tierrasanta High School.Serra High School is named after Father Junipero Serra, a canonized saint who founded Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769."With the establishment of missions, he participated in a lot of cultural erasure and violence again Native Americans," said Emma.In the past week, protesters have toppled statues of Father Serra in San Francisco and Los Angeles. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A simple gesture of kindness can make someone’s day or even save a life. “This one is Detecting Divas.” It all began with a book club. “That one is sisters of sleuth.”That Evie Arnold began hosting for seniors over a decade ago. “It’s all mysteries.”The women are all over 60.“There are so may single women that don’t have anybody, that I decided they should email me every day or text me every day just so I know everybody is ok.”But a couple of months ago, one of those emails didn’t come in.“I was making the change from landline to smartphone, but there was a glitch, I was without a telephone, deathy ill with no one to contact anybody.”Bookclub member Susan Lipp laid in her bed with no food, no water, just fear.“When you’re alone and you live alone with no family, I lay there and I thought after a couple days or so, I’m not going to get out of this. And I hope someone takes care of my kitties.”Evie called for a wellness check, and Susan was rushed to the hospital with a critical gastrointestinal condition.“She literally saved my life.”“It feels good to know that I’m 73 years old and I can still do good, be useful.”But that wasn’t the first time her compassion saved a life.When one neighbor's newspapers began stacking up, she knocked on the door only to hear the dogs barking and called for another welfare check.“I ran into her kids in the front yard and talked about time. I called the police on her, and they said you saved her life!”She urges everyone to pay attention to their neighbors, especially seniors.“Most police departments have volunteers that will take a look, and you might end up saving someone’s life too.”Susan believes everyone should join a book club.
