McDonald's announced it's tripling the amount of scholarship money it's offering to its employees to help them get a college degree.Eligible crew members can receive up to ,500 per year and managers can make up to ,000 a year, up from 0 and ,050 respectively.One of the workers who has taken advantage of the program is Jackie Southam from Henderson, Nevada. She's been working at McDonalds for the past 8 years.During that time, she's risen to become a manager, and she's also gotten help from McDonald's to earn a bachelor's degree from Nevada State in biology with a minor in chemistry.With the additional funding increase, she's planning to go back this fall and pursue a master's degree in public health.Her goal is to become an epidemiologist and work for the Centers for Disease Control.She says she's had to pay her entire way through school working two jobs, and the scholarship from McDonald's helped her get through.Right now, UNLV costs around ,100 a semester for state residents, and the College of Southern Nevada is around ,400, plus other costs like books and transportation.McDonald's isn't alone though. Working for several other large companies can also help you get assistance with tuition. Best Buy, Walmart, Verizon, and Bank of America all offer similar types of help.  1333

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel told ABC News Wednesday that additional people have been charged on a state level in connection to a kidnapping plot against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.Nessel said she couldn't go into detail on the charges at the moment.So far, 13 men have been accused in a domestic terrorism plot to kidnap Whitmer, bomb the Michigan Capitol building and harm local law enforcement.Many of the defendants appeared in court this week for preliminary hearings and bail hearings.The FBI broke open the investigation during a raid in Hartland on Oct. 7, which later revealed self-claimed militia groups from at least five U.S. cities were allegedly involved in the plot. Members of the largest nurses union in the country held a memorial for the more the 164 nurses who have died of COVID-19 in Washington on Tuesday and called on Congress to pass legislation that they said would provide more nurses with personal protective equipment.Members of National Nurses United placed 164 pairs of white shoes on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol building Tuesday while the names of nurses who have died of the virus were read aloud."There are no words that can fully express the anger and the sadness I feel this morning," Stephanie Simms of the United Nurses Union said, according to ABC News. "Mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters. All gone."The union held a similar event at the White House in May, when they placed 88 pairs on the ground.The union also called on the Senate to pass the HEROES Act, a COVID-19 stimulus bill introduced by Democratic representatives that passed the House of Representatives in May. However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) says the Senate will not consider the House bill.The HEROES Act contains a provision that would increase the production of personal protective equipment through the National Defense Act. LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — A new national poll from The New York Times and Siena College shows that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has a nine-point lead over President Donald Trump.According to the poll that was released Tuesday morning, Biden leads Trump 50% to 41% among likely voters. That's a slight increase from a month ago when Biden led Trump 49% to 41% among likely voters."When we look at the presidential race nationally — not battleground states and the Electoral College — it is clear that despite the first presidential debate, a presidential coronavirus diagnosis and hospitalization and many other events, little has changed in the dynamics of the race, Dr. Don Levy, the director of Siena College's Research Institute. "Biden has a nine-point lead, right at 50%, up from eight points last month. He continues to have a positive favorability rating, as Trump's continues to be negative."While comfortably ahead in national polls, the 2020 presidential race will be decided by a series of key battleground states. Trump won the 2016 election despite losing the popular vote to Hillary Clinton 46% to 48%.According to the poll, nearly one-third of voters have already cast their ballots. The poll found that 38% of Democrats have already voted, while 34% of independents cast their ballots, adding that only 20% of Republicans voted early."Nearly one-third of those likely to vote in the presidential election have already voted. Democrats and independents are much more likely than Republicans to have already voted at this point. Among the remainder of likely voters, half plan to vote in person on election day, one-quarter plan to vote in person before election day and one-quarter plan to vote by mail," Levy said."Among the 31 percent who have already voted, they support Biden by a huge 67-26 percent margin," Levy said.
