SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego officials are offering a new location to help temporarily shelter migrants seeking asylum.The city says it has identified a new property to use as a shelter since its current temporary shelter doesn't have the occupancy for long-term sheltering, in a letter to California's Office of Emergency Services."The county recently vacated the Camp Barrett youth correctional facility in Alpine. The facility is already classified for residential occupancy and therefore does not require significant alteration to be used as a shelter," Robert Vacchi, deputy chief operating officer of San Diego's Neighborhood Services, wrote.RELATED: Exclusive look inside San Diego shelter for migrant asylum seekersCamp Barrett was closed in October following years of steadily decreasing populations at the county's in-custody facilities, according to the county. The remaining population was relocated to a Urban Camp facility in Kearny Mesa. The facility was capable of housing 125 boys.Camp Barrett and surrounding property is owned by the city's Public Utilities Department, but slated for sale. Vacchi writes the property could be leased to the state or third-party on a temporary basis to use as a shelter for asylum-seeking migrants.The Alliance Healthcare Foundation has agreed to fund the operation of a facility, according to Vacchi, and the city has been in talks with the agency to secure shelter operations.The city is facing a Feb. 4 deadline to vacate the current shelter being used for migrant asylum seekers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Gas and Electric is opening several community resource centers as thousands remain without power amid planned outages. The company posted on its website Saturday that the centers will offer water, snacks, phone charging, ice, water trucks for livestock and up-to-date outage information. As of 1 p.m. Saturday, less than 1,000 remained without power in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County is letting voters know that they have options when it comes to dropping off their mail ballots.The county says voters can send in their mail ballots, drop them off at the Registrar of Voters in Kearny Mesa or drop them off at any of the 41 additional sites throughout the county.According to the county, the faster the ballots are returned, the quicker they can be prepared for counting on election night.The 41 drop-off locations are not early voting locations, but for mail ballots only, the county says.Click on the map below for a full list of drop-off location: “More than 1 million San Diego County voters use mail ballots, and that number continues to rise,” said Registrar Michael Vu. “The early drop-off sites are convenient for the voter, they help with the timely return of mail ballots and decrease the high volume of voters dropping off mail ballots at polling places on Election Day.”   960

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans should get their flu shots before the flu season typically starts, county health officials said Wednesday.Most flu cases are reported between the end of October and April or May, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency.It takes about two weeks after receiving the flu shot to develop immunity to the virus, said officials.“People should get vaccinated before the worst of the flu season gets here,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available across the region.”342 people in San Diego County died of the virus during the last flu season, officials said. Most of the deaths were among those over 65, with underlying medical conditions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego police are searching for two suspects involved in a knife attack in Bay Terraces early Sunday morning that left a 30-year-old man hospitalized.The assault happened at around 4:25 a.m. in the 6900 block of Paradise Valley Road, said Ofc. Tony Martinez, San Diego Police Department The victim told police he was confronted by two men who asked him for a cigarette."An argument ensued, and during the argument, the victim was stabbed multiple times," Martinez said.Both suspects fled in a white sedan-type vehicle, according to Martinez.The victim suffered a stab wound to the neck, the left bicep and lacerations to his nose, jaw and back, Martinez said. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition is unknown at this time but Martinez said he is expected to survive.The two men were described as Hispanic between 20 and 30 years old. One of the suspects stands about 6- foot, 2-inches tall weighing 180 pounds with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black baseball hat, a black jacket and blue jeans.The second suspect stands about 6-feet tall weighing 200 pounds with a heavy build.
