ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The San Diego Children's Discovery Museum in Escondido has been quiet since mid-March, when they had to close their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic."It's been hard, and in the beginning, it was very eerie," said museum Executive Director Wendy Taylor.Normally, the museum plays host to a few hundred visitors every day, and on a busy day, that number may reach as high as 500 guests. However, for the last four months, the museum has been nothing more than the sound of silence. In fact, over the last month, when other museums were allowed to reopen their doors, the Children's Discovery Museum did not."We don't really fall into the traditional museum category in terms of the reopening. Kids’ museums are specifically called out in the state guidelines as not being a traditional museum. So, in the guidelines for museums, it specifically calls out that interactive areas should remain closed,” Taylor said.Taylor told ABC 10News she's very proud of the way the museum has adjusted during these uncertain times. They've had to become more creative in all their activities, from camps to storytelling, and everything has gone online."Families really needed some support. They needed something regular and normal, that their kids could see and engage in,” said Taylor.Storytime has been very popular with the children, as the museum receives viewers from all over the world. The numbers have been so impressive, as they reach thousands of views per story."Typically, every story time reaches thousands of people during the course of the 24 hours that it is up,” Taylor said. The museum also had a virtual art contest where a winner was announced on Facebook Live. The theme was "Joy of the Outdoors.""Our mission is to inspire our children through exploration, imagination, and experimentation,” Taylor told ABC 10News.Visit https://www.sdcdm.org/ to learn more about the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum’s online camps and activities. 1978

Eyebrows were raised after a court filing Tuesday revealed former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, now under federal indictment, has three U.S. passports. On top of that, he had filed for 10 passport applications in as many years, according to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russia's alleged meddling during the 2016 presidential election.Three passports? We wanted to find some answers. Can you have more than one passport?Yes. U.S. citizens are allowed to have more than one valid U.S. passport at the same time, according to the National Passport Information Center, which is a division of the U.S. State Department. But in most cases, you are only allowed to have two valid passports at a time, according to the NPIC.As NPIC notes on its website, holding a second passport "is the exception to the rule."It remains unclear why Manafort has three."Having three valid U.S. passports is incredibly unusual and normally would raise a red flag," said Valentina Meehan, owner of New York-based passport and visa expediting service Passport Plus. The State Department declined to comment on Manafort's passports. An official from State said in a statement that its general policy is that "no person shall bear or be in possession of more than one valid or potentially valid passport of the same type (regular, official, diplomatic, no-fee regular, or passport card) at any time, unless authorized by the Department of State."The spokesperson noted that requests for more than one passport are reviewed on a "case-by-case basis."How do you qualify for a second passport?Typically second passports are given to frequent travelers, especially those who travel overseas for business a lot, said Meehan. One reason you might hold a second passport: if your primary passport contains stamps or visas to other countries that may cause the country you plan to visit to deny you entry, according to the State Department. For instance, if your passport shows that you have traveled to Israel, countries like Lebanon and Libya may not allow you in, Meehan said.Another scenario in which you might be granted a second passport is if you have submitted your primary passport for a travel visa or some other administrative reason but have an immediate need to travel to another country."Sometimes your passport can be stuck with a consulate or embassy for weeks for a visa," said Meehan. "Suppose you suddenly have to travel to Canada or Europe while you are waiting to get your passport back. Then you can apply for a second passport."How often do people need to renew or apply for a passport?A primary U.S. passport is valid for 10 years. A second passport is typically valid for one to four years based on a passport agency's discretion, after which an application can be filed for renewal. 2831

Election officials across the country say they are worried about their staff's safety as the presidential race remains too close to call three days after Election Day.Officials in battleground states like Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania say ballot counters have face threats from protesters who have been demonstrating in front of election centers in their states."I can tell you that my wife and my mother are very concerned for me,” Joe Gloria, the registrar in Clark County, Nevada, said during a press conference Thursday. There have been no reports of violence against ballot counters as of Friday morning. However, WPVI-TV in Philadelphia reports that police have thwarted a plot to attack the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where Philadelphia-area ballots are currently being tallied.Conservative protesters have also gathered at ballot-counting centers in Phoenix and Atlanta. The demonstrators have called for officials to continue counting ballots in Arizona — where Biden's lead has shrunk in recent days — while the AP reports that protesters in Atlanta were concerned about voter fraud. In Michigan, state Attorney General Dana Nessel reported on Twitter that members of her staff were being harassed."Dear members of the public: Please stop making harassing & threatening calls to my staff," Nessel tweeted. "They are kind, hardworking public servants just doing their job. Asking them to shove sharpies in uncomfortable places is never appropriate & is a sad commentary on the state of our nation."Nessel was referring to a since-debunked conspiracy theory that alleges that supporters of President Donald Trump were told to fill out ballots in Sharpie markers, which would cause the ink to bleed through the paper and cause the ballot not to count. 1780

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - An Escondido family was surprised with a life-changing gift Tuesday morning, brand new appliances for their home. The gift was made possible through a partnership between the Boys & Girls Club of America and Maytag.“When I heard my name I was speechless, I was overwhelmed," said Rosie Montejano. "I thought I was being tricked, but then I was like, no it’s us, it’s us!"Montejano's children attend the Escondido Boys & Girls Club after-school program.“The security that my kids get picked up, they’re watched, and I don’t have to worry about who’s watching my children," said Montejano. She explains it's been a difficult few years, with her older daughter battling addiction. The family adopted her daughter's two children, so now they take care of five. While Montejano can't donate financially to the Boys & Girls Club, she donates her time. She also asks her employer Walmart to donate goods to the Club whenever they can.Last year Danny Sherlock, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego, won the Maytag Dependable Leader Award, which allowed him the opportunity to pay it forward to others.Montejano's generosity never went unnoticed by branch manager Dave Luevanos, who nominated her for the Maytag donation made possible through Sherlock's leadership award."I feel truly blessed today, and I am overwhelmed," said Montejano. She's looking forward to having a new refrigerator and washer and dryer in time for the holidays. 1495

Federal agencies say cybercriminals are unleashing a major ransomware assault against the U.S. healthcare system. Independent security experts say it has already hobbled at least four U.S. hospitals this month, and could potentially impact hundreds more. In a joint alert, the FBI and two federal agencies say they have credible information of an imminent cybercrime threat to U.S. hospitals and healthcare providers. They say malicious groups are targeting the sector with ransomware that could lead to data theft and disruption of healthcare services. The attacks do not appear to have any connection to the U.S. presidential election. 645
