VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Now that the election is over, the question remains of what to do with leftover campaign signs.Carolyn Beach and a group of her friends volunteer to help find missing pets and reunite them with their owners. She decided this was the perfect opportunity to upcycle the political yard signs.“They’re great to spray paint or just use the metal part to use a poster board and put your lost pet flyer there,” explained Beach.Her friend MaryBeth Ruger added that they can reuse them many times and they're versatile.“These signs are better than posting them on a lamp post or a pole because you can’t see that dog. Where these, you can post in the middle of anywhere, and people will look at them and remember that dog’s face,” said Ruger.News 3 checked with Virginia Beach Waste Management and they said campaign signs should not be put in the blue recycle bins. (CNS) - A verdict has been reached in the trial of a woman and her gun instructor who are accused of carrying out a plan to kill the woman's estranged husband.A jury has found Diana Lovejoy, 44, guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. Welcon McDavid Jr. was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, but the reading of the verdict had to be postponed because Lovejoy passed out. Lovejoy and McDavid Jr. were charged with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder in the Sept. 1, 2016, attack on 45-year-old Greg Mulvihill, who was wounded in the 11 p.m. shooting in Carlsbad.Police allege Lovejoy and McDavid planned the crime and that the latter - - who worked at a gun range where Lovejoy was taking marksmanship lessons -- called the victim, arranged to meet him in the alley and opened fire on him with a rifle while hiding in a patch of bushes.Court records indicated Lovejoy and Mulvihill were in the midst of a contentious divorce, and that she had obtained a restraining order against him on accusations of emotional and sexual abuse.Mulvihill took the stand during the trial and described the moments leading up to him being shot, saying he didn't realize he'd been shot right away and, at first, he thought he felt something in his back even though he could see the shooter in front of him.Mulvihill testified about a bitter custody battle with his estranged wife.Mulvihill said he went up a remote trail in Carlsbad out of desperation, fearing Lovejoy would reopen their custody battle. He took a friend, a flashlight and a small aluminum baseball bat, but he thought he was picking up documents from a private investigator.Instead, as he approached the spot off Rancho Santa Fe Road and Avenida Soledad, he shined his flashlight around and spotted someone dressed in camouflage pointing a long gun right at him.Before he knew what was happening, Mulvihill said he was hit once in the side, the bullet exiting out his back. McDavid faces 50 years to life behind bars, and Lovejoy could be sentenced to 25 years to life.After court, the jury foreperson, Erin Reed,  told reporters the defense version of the shooting "seemed too far-fetched." 2224

Voting in the 2020 Election is took a number of different forms. From early in-person voting to voting by mail, states offered people various ways to do their civic duty."In many ways you can see that as a blessing or a curse of the American election system, that we have 50 different forms of election administration and within each state, counties have a lot of discretion of how they want to run their elections and design their ballots," said Seth Masket, a professor of Political Science and Director of the Center on American Politics at the University of Denver. Masket says each state having a different election process actually strengthens the security of American elections from foreign hackers. But it can also make it harder for some people to vote depending on what state or county they live in."For the most part, Election Day is not a holiday in the United States and if people are going to vote, they need to take time off work or make some sort of arrangements for child care. There’s a level of inconvenience to it and not every state and city is very accommodating of that," said Masket.A number of states across the country have been 100% mail-in ballots for quite some time, others have joined on recently. "I believe Oregon was the first to go in this direction back in the late 1990s. They started doing all mail-in ballots, a few others, mostly western states including Hawaii and Washington and Utah followed suit. Colorado started doing this for the 2014 election cycle, so it's a relatively small number of states. But since California is now in the mix it’s a large number of voters," said Masket.Ben Hovland is the Chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. He says in the last presidential election, 25% of Americans voted by mail or absentee ballot."We've seen a few other states come on recently like Utah and Hawaii and then a few states this year but you also have states like Arizona where they have permanent early voting list where about 75% of their voters are getting a mail ballot sent to them automatically," said Hovland.Hovland says in nearly every state, voters can request a mail-in ballot. Though, some states require you to provide a valid excuse for it. Still, he expects a record number of people will be voting by mail in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. No matter how you vote this year, experts say make sure you're going to your local government, and not social media, for information about how and where to vote, registration information and vote-by-mail deadlines."The National Association of Secretaries of State has led a program called Trusted Info 2020 which is oriented towards getting people to go to their local election official for information," said Hovland. VISTA (CNS) - A man who fatally beat his cousin in the front yard of an Oceanside home was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder.Joel Cardona, 37, was found guilty for the Aug. 2, 2018, death of Nestor Jurado, 37, following a trial that began last week at the Vista courthouse. A sentencing date has not yet been set, but the second-degree murder conviction means Cardona faces at least 15 years to life in state prison.Cardona was arrested on the morning of Aug. 2 during a tussle with Jurado in front of a home on Arthur Avenue, according to police and prosecutors.
